http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/wpcontent/ uploads/2009/02/khazaei-paper.pdf, 2009

Normative ethical theories have taken different approaches regarding moral development. The perspective of religion on moral character and its role in promoting virtues is an important issue. Divine religions, generally, focus more on the inherent character of a person than the specific actions he or she should perform. They try to cultivate pure and moral people, and have presented several factors for the improvement of moral character. Islam's primary focus is also on the moral agent instead of special good deeds and heavily emphasizes on building moral character. To such an the extent that it is reported from the Holy Prophet Mohammad (pbuh), the last of all the messengers, "Indeed I have been sent to perfect the excellences of character". This study surveys Islam's viewpoint in elucidating how a divine religion can help us in this regard. It aims to shed a further light upon the most important elements that can improve and develop moral character. This investigation is divided into two parts: the first part discusses the importance of moral character in Islam and explains some of most important factors by which, according to religious texts, one's behavior will be considered as moral. The second part explains the role of Islam in moral development and illustrates what potentiality and methods are used in Islam by which it can designate a consistent moral system which covers all aspects of human life and improve all facets of the soul, hence cultivate a person's thoughts, emotions and behavior morally. Since the cognitive content of virtues and the factors which make for an inner harmony are of vital important in moral development, they have been concentrated on in this study. As a result, I have emphasized that Islam uses every opportunity to establish a relationship with God which can influence one's whole life, and by virtue of loving Him, as the source of ultimate goodness, can shun vices and behave virtuously. Faith in God is considered as the most important virtue for cultivating a good person.

Morality: Meaning and Dimensions in Islam

Islam does not recognize that there is a purely intellectual problem or any other similarly stated problem, which will put a society or group or individual into crisis. Our Ummah was the strongest and the most vibrant, when it was still an Ummiyy or illiterate society. During the heights of the so-called intellectual and civilisational splendour, the Ummah was Balkanized into many splinters and all sorts of decadence were rapidly creeping into its body. The basic issue is moral. Islam demands from us to assess the moral condition of the society and to take the necessary steps to reorganize the society on the true moral foundations. In Islam the purpose of learning is to act. Ilm should be followed by Amal. Prophet has said that acting upon what one knows itself is the means of increasing one’s knowledge. In other words, our incapability to act upon our knowledge and realization itself will lead to our intellectual decadence.

Significance of moral values of Islam in the contemporary world

The total degeneration of our moral values is the real cause of our present predicament. Therefore, this study shows the influence and relationship of Islamic moral values to human beings’ behaviour in the rapid change in social life. The moral and spiritual teachings of the noble prophet are a living reality and still dominate different spheres of daily life in the Muslim world.

an An ethical framewok for the study of society according to the Quran

Religion plays a significant role in satisfying our physical as well as spiritual needs: Islam teaches us a code of behavior and gives us a meaning for our existence. Islam has unique morality of its own. It puts great deal of emphasis, for example, on equality and justice and emphasizes dignity of all human beings. We will deal with these issues in the course of this paper and its impact on social life of the human being. The main factor of the decline of Muslims and Muslim society in particular is the ignorance/illiteracy towards religion (including all affairs political, social etc). The people (ignorant) who cannot differentiate in-between what is right and wrong are always ready to accept every kind of absurdity and when not in a position of having the solution to the queries always become the target of rivals deception and seduction. The other factor is the decline or demise of the morals/ethics. We have put aside the saying in the Quran regarding good morals which our ancestors had followed thus touched the great heights. This fact is not hidden that as compared to other things, morals and ethics play a greater role in the rise and decline in the Nations. Its presence in every Nation is very important. The importance and position of ethics in social life according to the Islamic doctrines

The position of morality as an instrumental, distinguishing human beings from other creatures, and with the growth and excellence of moral virtues, brings the light of faith to his heart. Obviously, the moral system of Islam is full of ethical virtues and propositions that the Muslim person by their practical implementation, have the ability to complete their religion, and take steps to reform the affairs of the world and the Hereafter. The purpose of the construction of the teachings and doctrines which Islam has made obligatory and believes in them as the foundations of Islam is nothing but proper training for the purpose of institutionalizing the good temper and the healthy and stable social relations that are right and proper in humans. Accordingly, these divine doctrines and commands must always be repeated in order to institutionalize the right ethics. The place and importance of morality in social life is that even the practice of social laws and regulations is not possible without ethics, and morality is the best guarantee of the enforcement of laws and regulations. Hence, ethical debates are among the most important goals of communicating prophets in society, and without it, neither religion will have a conceptual basis for people, nor a society without ethics will be possible. This paper deals with the descriptive analysis approach to the true position of morality from the point of view of the Quran and narrations in society .
