Virtual Tours of Historical and Artistic Heritage in the Province of Caceres

2016

The 3D visualization of historical-artistic heritage in the province of Caceres is an essential tool for touristic promotion. To this end, a methodology is offered based on the application of panoramic spherical photography and terrestrial laser scanner (TLS). The general aim is the creation of geometric representations of sites of cultural interest by the visualization of spherical scenarios and the application of 3D modelling techniques. Particular aims include the geometric cataloguing and acquisition of this artistic heritage and the development of an interactive tool for tourists. A hypermedia atlas is created in which 3D spherical scenarios is visualized displaying videos obtained from the point of clouds and ASCII format downloadable 3D models are made freely available. Other benefits of this project are gains in the knowledge and assessment of the cultural heritage in Caceres.

Heritage and Information Communication Technologies. “The Glorious Return”, from Little Mont Moncenisio to Bobbio Pellice: a Tourist-Cultural Route

2012

The heritage summarizes the cultural, material and immaterial inheritance which refers to a local and community context expressing its characteristics, uniqueness and potential. The cultural route - container of heritage and structural elements of an area - contributes to the construction of the tourist services and the heritage image. It is oriented towards new musts in the tourism planning and therefore it generates emotional experiences, fosters creativity and participation, it provides different models of fruition and several reading and interpretation tools of the heritage. The attention to these issues led us to analyze the itinerary "The glorious return " (part of the wider European itinerary "The ways of the Huguenots and Waldensians") describing the technological applications that have been made such as the creation of a GIS web-site, a multimedia GeoGuide and an application "Augmented Reality for iPhones".

Interactive mapping and virtual technologies in purpose of managing built heritage in era of capitalism and parasitism of advertisements: case studies of Italy and Serbia

2019

Tourism helped capitalistic enlargement, and nowadays it is even considered as one form of it, how some authors wrote. The biggest escalator of tourism is, from the other side, heritage. This type of tourism created postcard cities that are endangering citizens, local sustainability, and at the end, heritage itself. Parasitism of advertisements and touristic facilities on the heritage sites often can be inappropriate, and if they are, it highly damages the values of an existing place. These problems are burning subjects in Serbia, post-communistic county, that for long period starting with the collapsing of this system and beginning of inflation, all the way to current times, was dealing with property-owning, illegalised objects and, corruption in public services. Dealing with this, the importance of the heritage is left by side. There are big investments in the last ten years, but somehow they seem more tourist-oriented than citizen-oriented. As the opposite, Italy is suggested as a comparative case study, with its long experience and history of preserving and conserving heritage. The main goal of the research is to compare these two countries, in such a manner to develop a sustainable system of tourism, policies and protection laws, and to understand and propose new ways of advertising-saving usurped surfaces of heritage, and experiencing heritage through virtual realities and interactive mapping for both citizens, and tourists.

Route of the World Heritage Monasteries in Portugal and a Digital Touristic Platform

International Journal of Heritage in the Digital Era, 2012

We present the ongoing project Route of the World Heritage Monasteries in Portugal and emphasize the planned Digital Touristic Platform. It's been created as a partnership between local authorities where those monasteries are located and with higher education institutions and the National Management Institute of Heritage. It is been financed by European funds over 14,4M. We describe the strategic plan, the key actions and the model of governance. The role of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on growth and on employment related to cultural heritage and tourism is then approached referring to e-business and digital platforms particularly. We present the results and some new start-up projects as a result of the created synergies. The importance of Heritage Economics with the use of ICT as well as the lessons learned so far are analyzed.

The Use of Virtual Reality to Promote Sustainable Tourism: A Case Study of Wooden Churches Historical Monuments from Romania

Remote Sensing, 2021

The accelerated development and expansion of cultural tourism in areas with unique tourist objectives, characterised by a high degree of risk in terms of their physical and chemical integrity, requires sustained efforts by all stakeholders to identify new methods, techniques, and procedures for their conservation, protection, and capitalisation, with respect to tourism. The aim of this study was to propose an optimal methodology for capitalising on tourism related to wooden churches, regarded as a structural item of tangible cultural heritage, with positive effects on the protection, conservation, information, and awareness of all stakeholders in tourism development. This involved the development of a web portal, in which were integrated the 3D models related to the analysed objects, the panoramic images inside them, the audio support, the photographs, and the accompanying text necessary to create and render a virtual reality (VR) production for purposes of virtual tourism (VT). The results obtained consisted of the creation of the website Bi-hor360°, which is freely navigable and whose content, including both textual and graphic information , can be easily accessed by all interested users. The aim involved was to release an online bridge for potential visitors to the fragile tourist attractions, facilitating the development of active knowledge and VR while raising awareness among the population and the local authorities about the role and the importance of the wooden churches in tourism and the local economy.

Digital Tourism: An Alternative View on Cultural Intangible Heritage and Sustainability in Tavira, Portugal

Sustainability, 2022

The digitalization of cultural routes and virtual storytelling has emerged as a way of showcasing to individuals the heritage of different cultural universes. Regarding this fractional environment, and as a by-product of the international EU funded iHERITAGE project, (B_A.2.1_0056), the goal is to create, through an innovation-driven growth process and technological transfer, brand strategies for the affirmation and better knowledge of intangible realities in the Mediterranean region. The Sicilian Tourism Department in Italy is the project’s lead beneficiary, with representative partners throughout six Mediterranean countries (Italy, Egypt, Spain, Jordan, Lebanon, Portugal). The case study in Portugal is being developed in Tavira, through the intangible cultural heritage of the Mediterranean diet. The research based on the cultural experience, the history of the landscape and the sense of identity and continuity of knowledge is reassigned into a digital platform—the creation of apps...

'Scio, urbs nobilissima. Tourism Uses of the fortified city based on Heritage Interpretation'

EUROMED HERITAGE 2003, 2003

This paper deals with the synergies between Information Technology, Heritage Interpretation, New Tourism and Destination Image promoted through Destination Information and Management Systems. The conceptual framework is exemplified by heritage interpretation patterns, especially designed for tourism uses. As materia prima, we used the Fortified City of the island of Chios. The Chian Castle is a major tourism attraction due to its character as an intercultural monument from Medieval Times, and to the fact that after nine centuries is still host to the local community.

3D modeling and virtual tours to map, record and visualize the cultural, archaeological and landscape heritage: the VisualVersilia project, in Proceedings of 3rd IMEKO International Conference on Metrology for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (Lecce 2017), Lecce, Imeko, 2017, pp. 166-171.

This article describes the methodologies and technologies developed during the realization of the WebGIS (Geographic Information System) visualversilia.com, namely a multimedia guide able to map, survey, visualize the rich cultural, archaeological and landscape heritage of Versilia (northwestern Tuscany). It enables users to delve into different temporal settings and to contextualize the local cultural sites within the geographic space of their specific historical periods. The immersive experience is also achieved thanks to the realization of virtual tours and navigable 3D models of archaeological complexes concerning the past and current appearance. This WebGIS is a digital platform, soon available online, for viewing and managing data relative to the cultural sites of Versilia, through their localization on an interactive map with several thematic layers, divided into chronological sub-layers. The aim of the research project is to provide useful information for knowledge, protection and enhancement of the cultural heritage of the area.
