This article focuses on understanding how Muslim-majority countries adapt to the discourse of moderate Islam to their political circumstances. Using Indonesia’s experience as a case study, the article argues that countries’ political configurations influence decisions to apply the discourse in domestic politics. In the Indonesian context, political leaders’ unwillingness and inability to confront the Islamists are crucial factors that limited the influence of moderation discourse in former Presidents Megawati’s and Yudhoyono’s reigns. During that period, the presidents used the discourse mainly to signal to the international community that Indonesia did not align itself with the transnational network of terrorism. In contrast with his predecessors, President Widodo is willing to use the discourse to undermine the influence of the Islamists, thereby neutralising their challenges and cementing his political power. Moreover, this article demonstrates that the content of the discourse o...
The Relationship of Islam and The State in Contemporary Islamic Political Discourse in Indonesia
Dirasah International Journal of Islamic Studies
The purpose of this study was to relate the views in the context of Islamic politics in Indonesia, this article is intended to explore issues relating to relations between Islam and the state. This study was motivated by the desire to criticize the development and relationship between Islam and the state which is very dynamically coloring the political situation in “Islamic majority country” Indonesia. This article concludes that understanding the relationship between religion and state with an Islamic political approach is not meant to establish a religious state or an Islamic state of Indonesia but rather to fill the spaces that are functionally religion in order society, nation, and state., and secularistic relations.
This article aims to understand the political construction of the “Moderate Islam” as a discourse in contemporary Indonesia’s foreign policy. Since 2004, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched some campaigns to project Moderate Islam as the image of Indonesian Islam. Within this discourse, Islam is conceived as “moderate” and “tolerant” as well as inherently democratic. However, in a more critical perspective, this Moderate Islam also contains a political and discursive construction. By using a genealogical approach, this article argues that the articulation of Islam in Indonesia’s foreign policy is influenced by the ideological underpinnings of each political regime as well as the hegemonic discourse operating in international politics. Furthermore, there have been three discourses of Islam in Indonesia’s foreign policy, as articulated by each political regime, namely (1) Islam as religious identity; (2) Moderate Islam from below, and (3) Moderate Islam as a part of Global War on Terror project.

Moderate Islam as a Solution to Pluralism in the Islamic World: The Experience of Indonesia
Journal of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization, 2019
This study examines the phenomenon occuring in the Islamic world in particular, where religion is experiencing serious self-destructive divisions caused by uncontrolled interests in theology, socio-political and economic matters. This can be seen in several Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan where there are numerous suicide bombings and mass killings among groups who are all Muslims. Indonesia as the world’s largest Muslim country is trying to protect itself from these undesirable threats, especiallythose of disunity and separation. This is more so due to the very nature of Indonesia that uniquely has a variety of religions, cultures, languages, customs, ethnic groups and tribes. Based on facts derived from observation and documentation this paper attempts to analyse the phenomenon. The results of the analysis show that Indonesia through the two most dominant religious organizations, namely Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, has developed moderate Isl...
Radicalism Vs Extremism: The Dilemma of Islam And Politics In Indonesia
Jurnal Ilmu Sosial, 2021
Despite its adherence to the principles of democracy, Indonesia is currently trapped in conditions and situations over the emergence of a new government system based on Islam. The notion of extremism dominates society, both the general public and the political elite, and has even infiltrated the youth via the education system. Community mobilization movements in the name of religion in the political sphere indicate that extremism has spread and is gaining strength. The main focus of this research is to make a clearer distinction between radicalism and extremism from both a political and religious perspective. To answer this problem, this paper clarifies the meaning of the terms "extreme" and "radical" in the context of religious politics from the point of view of democracy and distinguishes the signs for the two dimensions of extremism and radicalism. Not only that, in this study there are also explanations related to religious phenomena which basically have an indirect relationship with politics and extremism. This study approach uses a qualitative method taken from the study of Borum and Schmid. It argues that the difference between extremism and radicalism rests on the existence of an ideology. Radicalism is a form of process in which there is agreement or disagreement on violence in tactical and temporal considerations, while the concept of extremism is considered a motive.
Narrating Islamism in Indonesia: State, Agency, and Social Resilience
Religió: Jurnal Studi Agama-agama, 2017
Islamism or the so-called political Islam is conceptualized as a socio-political rather than a solely religious phenomenon. Inherently characterized by a singularly defined religious concept of purity and a clear-cut distinction between "we" and "them", it manifests into a various form of activities where "terrorism" is the most violent one. Following a series of terrorist attacks in the country, the Indonesian government through The National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) launched a de-radicalization program that aims to restrain and combat religious radicalism and "terrorism", particularly through its "stick and carrot" approach. Despite its success story in pacifying some terrorist activities in the country, the program is severely criticized for not dealing with the root causes of terrorism. It is also considered counter-productive as it creates resistance and hatred toward the state for specifically targeting Islam and, therefore, it provides incentives for religious radicalism and terrorism. The research conducted in Yogyakarta Province found that Islamism spreads and gains acceptance in certain sections in public through certain social channels and agencies. However, this paper argues that the existing cultural virtues and local wisdom could create social resilience against such radicalization process.
Umran; International Journal of Islamic and Civilizational Studies, 2016
UMRAN | 03-1 (2016) pp. 28-36 | www.http://jurnalumran.utm.my/index.php/umran | Abstract This research aims at analyzing political secularism in Indonesia and most specifically dealing with the recurrent polemic upon the relationship between Islam and State. The research initially seeks to describe the political situation of the country where the formalistic and substantives debate, especially on their distinctive approach to stipulate the proper role of religion on the country's politic, could be witnessed. The description, however, will deal more on the latter political paradigm which is increasingly grasping an impressive preference from numbers of political individuals and institutions particularly when they come to discuss Islamic tenets and their application within the context of a pluralistic society like Indonesia. Using normative and socio-historical approaches, the paper argues that this political preference, despite its convincing successes in Islamizing the country's politic, still suffers from numbers of defects that finally raise our apprehension. These defects summarily provide proofs to the questioned commitment of the substantive to the Islamic political values as a whole; the one which reveals an agreed separation of the state and religion; the one of secularism.
