Metaphorical models of romantic love in Romeo and Juliet

This paper is a report of ongoing research on the application of the theory of conceptual metaphor developed by George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, and Mark Turner to the study of Romeo and Juliet. One of the main goals of this research is the precise characterization of the various models of romantic love that can be discerned in Romeo and Juliet, a play whose main theme has traditionally been thought to be this emotion and its consequences. Since emotions are considered by most cognitive linguists to be conceptualized metaphorically and metonymically, the first step in the methodology has been to identify the metaphors and metonymies for romantic love in the play. Then an attempt has been made to discover their coherence and systematicity in the construction of the various love models. I have used K6vecses's studies of romantic love in American English as a basic reference point in my investigation of these love models. Part of the results of these two steps is reflected in the discussion of the various love models, which constitutes the bulk of the paper. A conclusion that gradually emerges from this discussion is that the dominant metaphors in the construction of these models and in the play at large are the light and darkness metaphors and the part-whole metaphor LOVE IS A UNITY OF TWO COMPLEMENTARY PARTS.

This paper presents the complexities of the linguistic expressions of the domain of LOVE in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Emphasis is placed on conceptual metaphors and metonymies, and especially on their interactions. The theoretical framework that has been used as a guide for this study is that of Cognitive Linguistics, and more specifically its branch called Cognitive Poetics. The conclusion of this study is that clear-cut distinctions between the two cognitive processes (i.e. metaphor and metonymy) for certain linguistic expressions cannot be easily made. We should therefore reconsider the way we categorize them, since their deeper conceptual structure may be based on both cognitive processes.

Shakespeare is a genius, and Romeo and Juliet, one of his four great tragedies is loved by readers, especially the favorite of the youth, and had been edited to a series of films and plays. This paper tries to investigate his key to success in Romeo and Juliet writing. It lies in his skill of using metaphor. Metaphor, or conceptual metaphor, is a cognitive term, a systematic way of human thinking, action and expression. Metaphorical expressions are displayed in this work based on his bodily experience.
A Pragmatic Reading of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
This article is an attempt to utilize pragmatics in the analysis of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet by using the "cooperative principle" and the "maxims" as developed by Paul Grice, and "speech acts theory" as clarified by J. L. Austin. The investigation has shown that by drawing upon such language analysis strategies, greater light can be shed on the meaning of the play, especially because it is one of Shakespeare's plays most amenable to pragmatic analysis. Furthermore, it has been found that this kind of analysis invites a special role for the reader to participate more creatively in the interpretation of the text besides providing an in-depth analysis to the play's scenes and speeches and highlighting certain aspects that may otherwise be overlooked. A pragmatic reading of the play enables us to understand the social function of language and consequently the relationships among the characters and their social status.
Researchers increasingly use corpus linguistic methodologies such as keyword analysis to study Shakespeare (see, for example, Culpeper 2002) or are studying Shakespeare from the perspective of cognitive metaphor theory (see, for example, Freeman 1995). This paper demonstrates how the UCREL Semantic Annotation Scheme, a software program for automatic, dictionary-based content analysis, may be used to add a further dimension to both approaches, by systematically taking account of the semantic relationships between keywords via an investigation of key domains, and providing empirical support for some of the love-related conceptual metaphors put forward by cognitive metaphor theorists. Translation strategies in the translation of idioms in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
Translating idioms is challenging for translators due to the cultural differences between a source language and a target language. In this regard, this research aimed to identify the translation strategies adopted by Anani in the translation of Romeo and Juliet, and the extent of the source text (ST) meaning of the idioms was conveyed in the target text (TT). A qualitative analysis was conducted to identify such translation strategies and determine the extent of ST meaning of such idioms was conveyed. Baker's translation strategies were used as a theoretical framework of the research. RESUMEN Traducir modismos es un desafío para los traductores debido a las diferencias culturales entre un idioma de origen y un idioma de destino. En este sentido, esta investigación tuvo como objetivo identificar las estrategias de traducción adoptadas por Anani en la traducción de Romeo y Julieta, y la extensión del significado del texto fuente (ST) de los modismos que se transmitió en el texto objetivo (TT). Se realizó un análisis cualitativo para identificar tales estrategias de traducción y determinar el grado en que se transmitió el significado ST de tales expresiones idiomáticas. On some Passions of the Characters in Shakespeare's " Romeo and Juliet " (a Semiotic Prospective
The aim of the present paper shall be to analyze determined semantic taxonomies of the main characters in Shakespeare's " Romeo and Juliet ". The focus shall be on rendering characters' actions passionate, due to a semiotics of action, as described in Greimas and Fontanille (1993). To my opinion, universal themes such as love, hatred, death, etc. can be subject to a passionate configuration of different characters perspective in action. This shall also be due to the recent definition of semiotics as a cognitive science on meaning interpretation. In conclusion, characters' passions resulting as final semantic entities shall give this study an empirical account for at least two reasons: first to argument semiotics' importance of artistic expressivity and second, to argument semiotics' epistemological significance besides its ontological one. " The signs' way " as Deely (2009) states, gives us the possibility of treating each character's perspective separately, thus rendering the signification process for each sign taken as an example separately.
