The study examined the state of school libraries in Adamawa state, Nigeria. Survey research design was used for the study. Multi- stage sampling procedure was employed in selecting 12 School Libraries for the study. The population of the study comprised of twelve (12) library in charge officers. The research instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. Data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistic. The findings of the study revealed that the staff strength of school library is very low; majority of the schools had few materials in their library, majority of the library officers in charge are no-professional and has low qualification and majority of the secondary school libraries had no school library period their school time table. The study investigated the role of the parent institution and library in generating funds to facilitate library services in public academic libraries in Cross River State, Nigeria using survey research design. A questionnaire was built on a modified six-point Likert scale designed to measure sources of library funds variables through government/parent institution and internally generated sources. The instrument was administered on 30 senior management library staff from 5 academic institutions in the state. The internal consistency of the instrument lied in the range of (729 ≤ rxx ≤ .893) with across time stability in the range (729 ≤ ree .796) measured via Cronbach alpha and test-retest reliability. The study found that over reliance on government and parent institution for funding and a lack of initiative from libraries in generating added or alternative funds to sustain services. Requisite recommendations especially urging libraries to be proactive in looking onwards to generate funding.

The study examined public libraries as instrument of development in the contemporary society: a study of Rivers State public library. The study was guided by three objectives and three research questions. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The population of the study comprises 112 users of the Rivers State Library Board and Jubilee Library Port Harcourt. The researchers employed the simple random sampling technique to select 102 users of the public libraries mentioned above which stood as the sample. The instrument used for data collection was the researchers' made structured questionnaire titled: Public Libraries and Societal Development in Rivers State (PLSDRS). The data generated were analysed using simple percentages. The paper through its findings concludes that public libraries encourage the advancement of self-conducted education, help citizens in creative development and also serve as agents of peace in the society. It therefore recommend that public libraries through her extension service channels should create full awareness of all the services they offer to the public as this will likewise boost usage. Public libraries should also be established in the rural part of the country. The public library personnel should ensure that good and appropriate information materials are selected, acquired and made available for use.

Purpose: This article traces the history and current status of public libraries in Nigeria. It examines the actual situation of public libraries in the country. Design/Methodology: The content of the article is based on literature, personal observation, discussions and interactions with colleagues, as well as personal visitations to public libraries in Nigeria. Findings: Public libraries in Nigeria are inundated by certain multiple and monumental challenges that have been triggered by the current economic recession. Almost all public libraries are in chaotic situation because of lack of proper awareness about their roles, poor funding, high rate of illiteracy, poor reading culture, inadequacy of information resources and services, and above all inadequacy of professionally trained personnel. Academic libraries in higher institutions of learning support the vision and mission of the institutions. Its main objective is to support the teaching learning and research activities of both students and lecturers. Funds Utilization and its Impact on Research Institute Libraries in Kaduna State By

This study was carried out to assess funds utilization and it impact on research institute libraries in Kaduna State. Twelve research institutes in Kaduna State with the exception of one which did not have a library were used for the study. The survey research design was adopted for the study, and questionnaire was used as the main instrument for data collection. The population consists of the directors, account officers, librarians and the users of eleven research institutes studied. The proportionate sampling was used to draw a sample size 133 from the eleven research institutes. The research data was analyzed by the use of frequencies and percentages. The findings indicated that they were highly utilized were grossly under funded by their parent organizations in budgetary allocation. School libraries are the backbones of functional education; without which academic excellence may not be achieved. Aside educational achievements, school library is essential for literacy, social, economic and cultural development of a nation. This study investigates the private school libraries at Ado-Odo, LGA, in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. A survey was conducted to both teachers and students with a sample size of 515; 80% students and 20% teachers responded. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Instruments used were self-structured questionnaire, interview and observations. The findings among others; show that the libraries lack up-to-date facilities; four out of the ten private schools visited were without a library; while six with a library, has only one librarian. Evaluative study of collections and services of selected academic libraries in Borno state, Nigeria

, in terms of availability of funds, currency, and quantity of the materials available for the benefit of all their users. Four objectives and four research questions guided the study. A survey study was conducted and a questionnaire was administered to sixty (60) staff of the libraries. The population of the study comprised of 60 academic librarians from the three academic libraries under study. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis. The results revealed that the academic libraries under study were underfunded which is affecting their services/operations output to their users; the major users of the libraries under study are staff and students; most of their collections were not relevant for teaching, learning and research activities.
Access to and use of public library services in Nigeria

The study investigated the factors hampering access to and use of public library (urban and rural) services in Nigeria. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed through the administration of a questionnaire to users in both urban and rural public libraries in Nigeria and conducting interviews with the public librarians. The objectives of the study centred on identifying awareness and utilisation of library services, including utilisation patterns. The study also sought to investigate levels of satisfaction among users as well as make recommendations for improved service delivery. The population was the registered public library user group from which 394 users were randomly sampled from twelve purposively selected librariestwo from each of the six regions. The respondents were mainly an educated male user group representing a wide variety of occupations. Awareness of services was restricted to a few services, and accessibility to the major library services was found to be a challenge to many. Utilisation patterns indicated infrequent use of only a few services, and very low satisfaction with what is being offered. Challenges identified included unawareness of services, too few copies of materials and lack of information literacy skills. Recommendations included the enhancement of community participation in decision-making concerning services, that relevant and enough materials be supplied, and that effective marketing be employed to improve access and to promote services among users and potential users.
ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN NORTH-WESTERN STATES OF NIGERIA
The study was carried out to assess the community support to public libraries in North-Western States of Nigeria. Six (6) research questions were raised and answered, and 2 hypotheses were also formulated and tested at α 0.05. The research questions sought to find out what community support for public libraries are available in the North-western states, who are the stake-holders of the community support for public libraries in the North-western states, what types of donations are received by the public libraries in the North-Western States, how do the public libraries in the North-Western States utilized the community support meant for them, to what extent are the clientele of public libraries in the North-western states satisfied with the community support programmes provided to them, to what extent have the community support affected the services of public libraries in the North-Western States. A survey research design was employed for this study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 30% (686) from a population of 2,285. Data collected from the research questions were analyzed using frequencies count, and histogram, while Null Hypotheses one and two were tested using One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of confidence. The research discovered among others that donation of books and valuables forms the most frequent types of community support for public libraries, the public libraries in the North-Western States are not suffering from any neglect but the funding received from the government is inadequate. The resources and services of public libraries studied improved after they received and utilized their community support, there is a significant difference in the types of donations received by the public libraries. The research concludes that community support initiative for public libraries should be continued because all financial gifts are critically important, especially during the crucial times when the libraries have capital intensive projects and government is yet to release money, the foundations/community based organizations/groups augments public library’s funds with donations to help the libraries preserve their tradition of excellence. Lastly, the researched made some recommendations that will help the Directors of public libraries to improve on the existing community support initiative in their respective libraries.
