Quis est qui ligno pugnat? Missionaries and Evangelization in Late Antique and Medieval Europe (4th - 13th centuries) (original) (raw)
The aim of this volume is to collect contributions that explore the topic of Europe’s evangelization, by involving scholars interested in different disciplinary sectors. The period taken into consideration covers approximately ten centuries, stretching from Constantine the Great to Luis IX. Starting from Constantine’s fundamental revolution in 313, the Church had the opportunity to spread its message both within and outside the Empire through an intensive evangelization effort. Later, within the crusade ideals this effort became not only an “instrument” to “export” the faith, but also a way to repress the enemies of the Church within the Christian world. Contributions on the various aspects of the missionary figure are welcomed: monks, priests, bishops, as well as kings, queens, emperors and empresses who played a role in supporting the great effort of the Church to spread the Word of God through both the West and the East can be considered as case studies. Special focus will be given to the connection between the expansion of Christianity and military conquest, as well as to the impact of missionary work in its socio-historical context. With an eye to the most recent historiography, contributors should take into account different perspectives, exploring their topic from a literary, hagiographic, anthropologic and material point of view. Thus, they should elaborate an original analysis of missionarism and its diachronic development. Suggested topics: - Christianity’s success and diffusion within the Roman Empire - Evangelization and pagan resistance - Arianism and other heresies - Relationships between Church and regna - War and evangelization - Material evidence of missionary activities - Analysis of documentary sources - Miracles and conversions - Martyrdom - Diachronic evolution of missionarism Abstracts in English of no more than 2.300 characters should be sent, along with the CV, by March 31st, 2015 to the following email address: epiazza@unict.it The acceptance of the contributions will be communicated by June 30th, 2015. The deadline for the definitive submission of manuscripts written in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, is December 31st, 2015. Each paper should have an extension ranging from 30.000 to 60.000 characters, including both bibliography and notes consistent with the publication criteria (instruction for paper presentation will be sent to authors of the accepted abstracts). Contributions will be subject to a process of double-blind peer review. The volume, provided with ISBN and DOI codes, as a physical (limited number) and digital document, will be published by Alteritas-Interazione fra i Popoli. A round table for the volume’s presentation will be organized at the University of Verona. For further details, please contact: epiazza@unict.it; alfredo.buonopane@univr.it
