The study examined WhatsApp and the development of writing skills of undergraduate students of University of Ghana. The objectives of the study were to ascertain how School of Communication Studies students currently use WhatsApp, to examine whether they want to use WhatsApp to develop their writing skills, to investigate the relationship between WhatsApp and writing skills of students and to discover if WhatsApp affects their writing skills positively or negatively. Three theories were used in relation to this study namely: The Uses and Gratification theory, Connectivism theory and Diffusion of Innovation theory. The nature of the study was quantitative. The main instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Purposive sampling technique was adopted to ensure that students chosen have relevant knowledge towards the study with a sample size of 250 respondents. The discussions of the findings indicated improvements in writing skills of students, but students said their intention to use WhatsApp is not meant for developing writing skills. Evidently, WhatsApp is a tool that can enhance the writing skills of the students if used positively. The study found that Whatsapp has impacted negatively on the writing skills and academic performance of students in the School of Communication Studies, University of Ghana. The researcher recommends that lecturers use the WhatsApp tool to help students better their writing skills and also use it for discussion of other academic work.

Writing skill is a complex skill that cannot be learned independently. Although students learn from home, they need a comprehensive understanding of theories and practical guidance from the teacher. Therefore, teachers use many media and applications that can support this online learning with various considerations. Many universities in Nigeria are yet to embrace technology for pedagogy through the use of modern learning gadgets to enhance learning activities in their campuses. Such modern gadgets include the Global system of Mobile Communication (GSM). In every campus in the country, virtually every student owns a phone and can, thus, participate in at least a two-way communication between the teacher and the learner. Interviews conducted on the poor utilisation of this gadget in schools show that lecturers believe it is highly informal and would, therefore, reduce the seriousness and effectiveness of learning if deployed in and outside the classroom. The Use of Whatsapp Messaging as Mobile Learning in Developing Writing Skills

WhatsApp messaging offers four types of messages that have the potential of reinforcing the class material and given positively influence student's learning. It also helps a teacher to improve student's reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. Besides that, the use of WhatsApp affects students learning processes, such as teachers cannot fully manage students' focus on learning. The teacher does not know the student's problems in writing directly. The writing skill of students still has low-quality. The students were not motivated in writing activities. This study's purpose was to show the use of WhatsApp messaging as mobile learning more effective in developing students' writing skills. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The data was from articles and journals related to Using WhatsApp for learning. The result of this research helped the students to develop writing skills, the performance of grammar, and lexically. It allows students to learn from other friends writing. Through WhatsApp chat was provide the students to practice English writing freely as communication. Writing through WhatsApp: an evaluation of students writing performance

WhatsApp messenger is a cross-platform working under smartphones that can provide instant messaging. Worldwide, WhatsApp messenger has become popular because it is practical for mobile users. Previous research has suggested the effectiveness of extending mobile devices into e-learning. However, mobile learning in the form of instant messaging is still underrepresented. This research project explores the effectiveness of instant text messaging via WhatsApp for undergraduate students in higher education. A group of 50 students were given a written assignment and were required to text message one another. The students used WhatsApp messenger to develop their EFL basic writing skills. The students reported their experiences through a survey after completion of the writing assignment. The results showed students strengths and weaknesses. Although their holistic scores remained low, they seemed to have benefited from the spell checker as they have received better scores in the area of spelling and vocabulary. The results showed that the use of WhatsApp in the classroom increased students' motivation to write. Overall, findings from this small-scale research project provide a better understanding on the role of mobile technology in higher education.

The popularity of WhatsApp Group in the academic major has raised the interest of researchers and practitioners in exploring its potential benefit in teaching EFL aspects. This present paper attempts to investigate whether the use of WhatsApp Group as a learning media might enhance undergraduate students‘ writing ability. It also explores the problems affecting the use of WhatsApp Group in writing class.There were fifty-eight undergraduate students who participated in this study. The purpose of this article is to present the results of the survey of scientific production on WhatsApp as a tool for pedagogical use. For this, the "State of the Art" methodology was used, which consists of a study of everything that was researched and built in the area, from the search for descriptors in a database. In the case of this research, the SciELO (Brasil Scientific Electronic Library Online) platform was selected. The descriptors "WhatsApp, mobile, m-learning, learning, education, teaching, literacy, literacy and academic literacy" were used. As for the results, the 17 articles were presented along with which level of education they were present and which areas are interdisciplinary with the research. Among the articles, their contributions to thinking about the use of WhatsApp in education were also presented, namely: the use of WhatsApp by the subjects before the research; their various positive perceptions; its use in teacher training, orality, language teaching and health; needs of the development of new technological competences.
