This project was an investigation into the effects of training in hindering the growth of entrepreneurship in Kenya, a case of Karatina Town in Nyeri District. The objective behind the study was to investigate study and analyze the effects of training in hindering the growth of entrepreneurship in Kenya. Training plays a major role in enabling one to be productive, effective, and efficient in performance of his/her duty. Although entrepreneurship depends on one's creativity and innovativeness, the major role is played by entrepreneur and his employee's skills and training in combining the factors of production. Training was thus taken as a major boost in entrepreneurship industry. The objective of the study was to determine the influence of content of entrepreneurship training on performance of the Small and Micro Enterprises in the Information Communication Technology sector in Nairobi, City County, Kenya. Descriptive research design was adopted. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected from a population of 273 small and micro enterprises that successfully received entrepreneurship training prior to the year 2012 from the Information Communication Technology Authority. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select 73 respondents. Descriptive statistics included percentages, frequencies, means and standard deviations while regression analysis was used for inferring meaning to the entire population. Entrepreneurship Skills as Determinant of Performance of Small-scale Businesses in Kuria West Sub-County, Kenya

Many countries, Kenya being among them, small scale businesses have become increasingly important, especially as agents of job creation, wealth accumulation, poverty reduction and a majorly contributing factor to the growth of national economies. In most cases, the SME capacity building growth and support intervention is given out for a particular fixed period whereby phased out approach which includes steady withdrawal towards the end of the period is applied. This is to permit small businesses to work on their own. This aside, the small-scale businesses still continue to struggle in their areas after the support is withdrawn, with only few enterprises surviving. The main objective of the study therefore was to establish how Entrepreneurship skills affect performance of small-scale businesses in Kuria West Sub County. Descriptive survey and correlation designs were entirely used in the study. Out of the target population of 933 SMES from Kuria West Sub County 272 SMEs were sampled using stratified random sampling. The strata were wards within Kuria West Sub County from which small-scale businesses were randomly selected. Well organized structured questionnaires were used as primary data collection instruments for the study. The study found and concluded that at the significance level of 95%, training, entrepreneurship skills and networking skills were significant factors in influencing performance of the small-scale business with significant values of 0.000 each. Further, the study found and concluded that loaning was an insignificant determinant of performance of the small-scale business with significance value of .535. Finally, the study found and concluded that entrepreneurship skills was the most significant factor in the performance of the small-scale business followed by training and eventually the networking skills. The study recommends that regular workshops or training sessions should be organized for small-scale business owners. Further, recommends that a microfinance or small business loan program should be established specifically tailored for entrepreneurs. In addition, a comprehensive entrepreneurship development program that focuses on nurturing essential skills for business success should be developed. Finally, networking events, business expos, and local trade fairs should be facilitated where small-scale business owners in Kuria Sub County.

Despite the many startups and government effort to improve the regulatory and institutional framework in Kenya, most Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) do not evolve into medium enterprises. This paper sought to determine effect of education and socio-cultural factors on the growth of SMEs in Kenya. The research design employed in this study was the descriptive cross sectional design. The study targeted SMEs situated in Nairobi City and operating in four sub-sectors of the economy namely: transportation and storage; accommodation and services activities; information and communication; financial and insurance activities; and professional, scientific and technical activities. Effects of Micro-credit, Micro-savings and Training on the Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Machakos County in Kenya

The objective of every micro-entrepreneur is to grow their businesses into large enterprises. To achieve this, most of the micro-entrepreneurs make use of microfinance services and training to improve their productivity and profitability. Many studies have been done in Kenya on SMEs and how they are influenced by microfinance services but none had focused on the effects of microfinance services on the growth of the SMEs. The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of micro-credit, micro-savings and training on the growth of SMEs in Machakos County. A survey research design was applied to study 8 types of business categories in Machakos County. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 100 businesses. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the relationships between micro-credit, micro-savings, training and growth of SMEs. The results show that micro-credit, micro-savings and training jointly contribute positively to SMEs growth. However, the effect of training is not statistically significant. This could be attributed to training that is not based on the real needs of SMEs.

Factors Affecting the Performance of Small and Micro Enterprises in Limuru Town Market of Kiambu County, Kenya

Abstract- It is generally accepted that SMEs are becoming increasingly important in terms of employment, wealth creation, and the development of innovation. However many problems encounter SMEs and as a result, many firms perform dismally and fail to grow. In addition it is generally known and accepted that there is a high mortality rate of SMEs within the first two years. Given this high failure rate, it becomes vital to research the factors required to enable the SMEs to survive and indeed progress to the growth phase of the organizational life cycle. The study sought to establish the factors affecting the performance of small and micro enterprises (SMEs) traders at Limuru town market in Kiambu County, Kenya. The study employed a descriptive research design to achieve the objectives. The target population under study was the 965 licensed SMEs by Limuru sub-county operating in Limuru Market in 2014. The study used a questionnaire to collect the required data from a sample of 274 SMEs. The data collected was coded, quantified and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative data was analyzed by the use of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The study concluded that access to finance and availability of management experience are the key socio-economic factors affecting the performance of businesses in Limuru Town Market. The other key factors that were found to affect businesses in Limuru Town Market positively are: access to business information, access to infrastructure and government policy and regulations. The study recommended that the government should start offering basic business and financial management skills as this will enable entrepreneurs to make informed investment decisions as well as enhance their entrepreneurial skills that enable them to recognize and exploit the available business opportunities.
