Relationship between the Mandibular Condyle Position and the Bite Force in the People with Normal Temporomandibular Joint

International Journal of Dentistry, 2023

Statement of the Problem. Te mandibular condyle position is important in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Te bite force is a mechanical force that may afect the condylar position. Purpose. To investigate the relationship between condylar position in the glenoid fossa and maximum bite force in adults with normal temporomandibular joint. Materials and Methods. In this cross-sectional study, 23 subjects (21 females and 2 males; mean age 38.88 ± 11.7 years) with 41 joints participated. Right and left joints were examined using cone-beam computed tomography. Maximum bite force was measured using the strain gauge transducer in the regions of right molar, left molar, and incisors. Pearson correlation coefcient, paired sample t-test, and binary logistic regression were employed for analysis. Results. Te mean maximum bite force was 169.09 ± 87.7 N. Te most common position of the condyle was anterior (n 36) and inferior (n 31). Te mean of mandibular condyle joint spaces for right and left sides were not statistically signifcant (P > 0.05). Tere were no relationships between the condylar positions and the mean maximum bite force (P > 0.05). Conclusion. Te condylar positions in the glenoid fossa are not related to the bite force in the people with normal temporomandibular joint.

Assessment and Comparison of the Condylar Guidance by Protrusive Interocclusal Records and Panoramic Radiographic Imaging in Edentulous and Dentulous Individuals

International Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry

Aim: To compare the condylar guidance angle obtained by extraoral Gothic arch tracing, protrusive interocclusal records (IORs), and orthopantomogram (OPG) in completely edentulous and dentulous subjects. Materials and methods: A total of 30 edentulous and 30 dentulous subjects were selected. Conventional steps in the fabrication of complete denture with balanced occlusion were carried out. Extraoral Gothic arch tracing records were obtained from each subject. Protrusive IORs were used to program the Hanau Wide-Vue semiadjustable articulator, to obtain the sagittal condylar guidance angle. The sagittal condylar guidance was determined in 60 subjects by protrusive IORs and facebow transfer. The sagittal outline of the articular eminence and glenoid fossa was traced in panoramic radiographs. The sagittal condylar path inclination was constructed by joining the heights of curvature in the glenoid fossa and the corresponding articular eminence. This was then related to the constructed Frankfurt horizontal plane to determine the radiographic angle of sagittal condylar guidance. Results: There was statistically significant difference between the sagittal condylar guidance values obtained using extraoral Gothic arch tracing and OPG method (p 0.0237) in edentulous subjects. Statistically significant values were obtained using protrusive records and OPG method (p 0.0237) in dentulous subjects. Conclusion: The use of OPG to set condylar guidance on the articulator should be taken into consideration for both dentulous and edentulous subjects. Clinical significance: In clinical practice, the use of IORs following Gothic arch tracing for the programming of semiadjustable articulator may be associated with manual errors. To minimize the errors and to obtain more accurate sagittal condylar guidance values, the use of OPG along with IORs should be considered for programming of the semiadjustable articulator.

Inclination of mandibular canine in relation to the condylo-occlusal line

international journal of stomatology & occlusion medicine, 2008

Statement of problem: Geometrically, to best resist occlusal forces, the mandibular incisor presents generally an orthogonal inclination (approximately 90 ) to the radius of rotation during the closing movement of the mandible, the centre of rotation being the condyles.

Influence of Anterior Guidance on the Inclination of Horizontal Condylar Guidance in Dentulous Subjects - A Clinical Study

Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences, 2021

BACKGROUND One of the most widely used methods to record horizontal condylar guidance is the use of protrusive interocclusal records. Therefore, this study was done to evaluate the reliability of protrusive interocclusal record with and without the influence of anterior determinant on horizontal condylar guidance among dentulous patients. METHODS Diagnostic impressions of 21 participants were made and casts were poured. Facebow record were obtained and transferred to semi-adjustable articulator. Protrusive interocclusal records were made using Alu-wax. In group 1, protrusive interocclusal records were obtained at incisal edge to edge position (conventional method). In group 2, 3 and 4 protrusive interocclusal records were obtained at a distance of 4 mm, 6 mm and at incisal edge to edge position respectively using a customized flat anterior jig. Programming of the Hanau articulator were done for all the 4 groups. One-way ANOVA test and Pearson’s correlation tests were done to compare...

A Comparative Evaluation of Condylar Guidance Value from Radiograph with Interocclusal Records made During Jaw Relation and Try-in: A Pilot Study

Journal of Indian Prosthodontic Society, 2013

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of programming the articulator using the radiographs and the interocclusal records made during Jaw relation (Arrow point tracing) and Try-in stage. The study comprised of 15 edentulous subjects with well formed maxillary and mandibular ridges, with no signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders and neuromuscular disorders. Digital Orthopantomograph was taken for all the subjects. The condylar guidance angles were traced on Orthopantomograph for right and left sides and the values were recorded. The protrusive interocclusal records were made at jaw relation stage and at try-in stage using bite registration paste (Bitrex- vinyl polysiloxane) for all subjects. These interocclusal records were used to programme the Semi-adjustable articulator (Hanau Wide Vue) and the condylar guidance values on the right and left sides were recorded. The condylar guidance values so obtained were compared with the values obtained by Or...

Anterior open bite: cephalometric evaluation of the dental pattern

Brazilian Dental Journal, 2006

The purpose of this study was to compare the dental pattern of patients with anterior open bite malocclusion to that of individuals with normal overbite by utilization of lateral cephalograms, panoramic radiographs and study casts. The findings showed that there was no significant difference in the inclination of the occlusal plane (SN.PlO) and position of the maxillary and mandibular incisors (1-NA, 1-NB) between both groups of individuals; but the angles of inclination of the maxillary and mandibular incisors (1.1, 1.NA and 1.NB) differed statistically between patients with anterior open bite of the individuals that presented normal overbite, which suggests that the anterior open bite may be of dental origin.

Cephalometric comparison of adult anterior open bite treatment using clear aligners and fixed appliances

The Angle orthodontist, 2018

To compare fixed appliances and clear aligner therapy in correcting anterior open bite and in controlling the vertical dimension in adult patients with hyperdivergent skeletal patterns. In this retrospective study, two treatment groups of adult (≥18 years old) hyperdivergent patients (mandibular plane angles of ≥38°) with anterior open bites were included: 17 fixed appliance patients and 36 clear aligner patients. Thirteen cephalometric measurements representing the vertical dimension were reported for each group. A two-sample t-test was used to assess differences in changes in mandibular plane angle and overbite between the two treatment groups. There were no statistical differences found in the magnitude of overbite correction and the changes in any of the cephalometric measurements for vertical control. The clear aligner group showed a slightly greater amount of lower incisor extrusion ( P = .009). The main mechanism of open bite correction was similar between the two treatment g...

The use of skeletal anchorage in open bite treatment: a cephalometric evaluation

The Angle orthodontist, 2004

The aims of the present study were to assess the effectiveness of skeletal anchorage for intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth, to correct open bite malocclusion, and to evaluate the usage of titanium miniplates for orthodontic anchorage. Anterior open bite is one of the most difficult malocclusions to treat orthodontically. Currently, surgical impaction of the maxillary posterior segment is considered to be the most effective treatment option in adult patients. Various studies have reported the use of implants as anchorage units at different sites of midfacial bones for orthodontic tooth movement. The zygomatic buttress area could be a valuable anchorage site to achieve intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth. Ten patients, 17 to 23 years old and characterized with an anterior open bite and excessive maxillary posterior growth, were included in this preliminary study. Titanium miniplates were fixed bilaterally to the zygomatic buttress area, and a force was applied bilaterally with...

Transverse Dentoskeletal Features of Anterior Open Bite in the Mixed Dentition

The Angle Orthodontist, 2009

Objective: To apply both conventional cephalometric analysis and morphometric analysis (thin-plate spline analysis) to posteroanterior (PA) cephalograms to test the hypothesis that the dentoskeletal features of subjects with anterior open bite in the mixed dentition are no different from those of normal controls. Materials and Methods: A group of 22 white subjects (6 males, 16 females; mean age, 8.7 ± 0.7 years) with anterior open bite (AOBG) was compared with a control group (CG) of 22 white subjects (11 males, 11 females; mean age, 9.2 ± 0.8 years) with Class I occlusal relationships, and without anterior open bite and sucking habits. Subjects of both groups were in the mixed dentition and had no history of orthodontic treatment. Between-group statistical comparisons were performed with independent sample t-tests and permutation tests. Results: AOBG exhibited statistically significant shape differences with respect to CG that consisted of a transverse contraction of the zygomatic ...
