Developing of an Environmental Literacy Instrument: In the Context of Aboriginal Students

Environmental literacy instruments developed by previous researchers do not take into account the background of the younger generation of aboriginal students who have undergone a change in the social and economic aspects of the present day. In response, this study aimed to develop an environmental literacy instrument in the context of indigenous students in Malaysia. The instrument development in this study involved five stages, namely conducting analysis of literature review, performing expert validation, carrying out a pre-test, conducting exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and performing reliability analysis. In this study, the 56-itemsurvey consists of 20 questions on knowledge about the environment, 21 items on environmental intrinsic factors and 15 items on environmental behavior. The questionnaire was administered to 400 indigenous students at the primary and secondary school level (ages 11 to 14 years old). Exploratory factor analysis indicated that the 25 items on intrinsic factors were grouped into four factors, namely attitude, locus of control, personal responsibility and environmental beliefs. The Kuder-Richarson for knowledge about the environment was 0.60 while the Cronbach's alpha values for intrinsic factors were .802 for attitude,.705 for locus of control, .708 for environmental beliefs and .703 for personal responsibility. The Cronbach's alpha value for environmental behavior was .882. This instrument is helpful in research and evaluation that is aimed at measuring environmental literacy for environmental conservation in the context of indigenous students.

Inculcating awareness in preserving the environment among citizens is important. Thus Environmental Education (EE) was introduced as a compulsory subject for all Malaysian students including Aboriginal community. However, many researchers have reported that indigenous knowledge (IK) with regards to environment education received less attention by researchers although many researchers have suggested that IK greatly influenced the understanding, as well as the behaviour of the Aboriginal people in preserving and conserving the environment. This study aims to investigate the effect of gender, education level and tribes on environmental literacy among Aboriginal community in Pahang, Malaysia. This study adopted a survey research design where data were collected using two research instruments which are knowledge test and questionnaire to examine their knowledge and behaviour towards protecting the environment. Findings indicate that the level of environmental knowledge among Malaysian Aboriginal people is at a moderate level while their behaviours towards environmental care are at low moderate level most probably because the formal EE curriculum at school does not relate well with their IK. Therefore, it is suggested that Malaysian EE curriculum should be revised to creatively acknowledge and integrate IK to ensure its relevancy to Aboriginal communities.

This study determined the contribution of predictor factors (i.e. knowledge about the environment as well as internal and environmental factors) on environmental care behaviour among aboriginal students. The knowledge about the environment that was investigated in this research includes environmental knowledge and environmental action knowledge. The internal factors include elements of attitude, personal responsibility, and beliefs, while the elements of environment factors are social influences, information resources, and environmental management facilities. In addition, this study used an environmental knowledge test and questionnaire as research instruments. The SERASI program is one of the efforts to implement environmental education among school students in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. The SERASI program aims to create a society that always cares about the environment. SERASI is also a centre of learning and teaching that can influence schools and communities toward sustainable development. Hence, this study was conducted to assess the level of environmental knowledge, the students' sources of environmental knowledge and their knowledge about the types of pollution in their surroundings. Stratified random sampling was conducted to obtain data from secondary form four students. Three hundred eighty-five (385) sets of questionnaires were collected for this study and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The results showed that the environmental knowledge among the form four students of SERASI was moderate. The student's sources of knowledge were through the SERASI program and the internet. The type of pollution widely noted by students was the waste issue.

Challenges of Environmental Education: Inculcating Behavioural Changes among Indigenous Students

The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges encountered by teachers in teaching and learning of environmental education and the proposed solutions for cultivating positive behavioural changes among indigenous students. The study was conducted among teachers from 12 primary and secondary indigenous schools in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to collect data from the teachers. Based on the findings, two challenges in implementing environmental education in indigenous schools were identified: 1) challenges arising from the teachers and 2) challenges from the indigenous students themselves. Teachers were challenged by time constraints, heavy workload, poor teaching aids, unavailability of manual/handbook, and the lack of support from the school administrators. In contrast, the challenges from the indigenous students come from their lack of environmental awareness, hygiene problem, low self-confidence and problem in learning. The identified challenges can be addressed by teacher's competency in integrating environmental education and creative teaching approaches based on the ability of the indigenous students as well as support from the relevant stakeholders.
Teachers’ Views on Integrating Environmental Education for Aboriginal Students

This study was investigate the teachers' views on integrating environmental education in terms of the definition, the importance, and the environmental education approach in aboriginal school. Data were collected through interviews using purposive sampling from six primary and six secondary school's teachers who were teaching in Aboriginal schools in Pahang, Malaysia. The verbatim transcript was analyzed manually based on incorporated the same code into several categories until the theme and sub-themes of the teachers' views emergence regarding the environmental education in aboriginal school students. Results showed that the teachers implemented environmental education through fostering of environmental values in subject taught, creating clean environment in classroom, writing essay related environment issues, and stimulating the students' thinking through observation. However, environmental awareness programs conducted by the schools are limited. Therefore, the teachers must have competencies in integrating environmental education through subject matter and established by the role of related stakeholders to aboriginal community.

The level of environmental awareness of secondary school students is quite embracing. The purpose of this paper is to identify the level of environmental awareness among secondary school students. The sample consists of 600 students including both boys and girls. Questionnaire developed by the researcher is the technique used to collect the data. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson coefficient of correlation are the techniques used to analyze the data. The result shows that the level of environmental awareness among students is low. No significance difference is found with respect to age and settlement in the environmental awareness level of the students. Conversely, significance difference was found in the environmental awareness of secondary school students belonging to different age group.

This study aims to determine the level of environmental literacy of students. Research using descriptive quantitative research methods. The respondents of this study were 110 class XII students at SMA Negeri 6 Wajo. The data collection technique uses environmental literacy instruments based on aspects of environmental literacy by NAAEE (North American Association for Environmental Education) consisting of cognitive aspects, attitude, and behavior. Measurement of cognitive aspects using questions while aspects of attitudes and behavior using a questionnaire with a scale Likert. The results showed that the environmental literacy of class XII students at SMA Negeri 6 Wajo as a whole (71.3%) was in the medium category with details of cognitive aspects (50.0%) being in the medium category, attitude aspects (84.1%) being in high category and behavior (78.7%) is in the high category.
