Objective. To study antibiotic resistance and its association with serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniaeisolated from hospitalized children with communityacquired ENT infections in Belarus during 20132016 and to analyze a potential for the use of different antibiotic classes in the treatment of those infections.Materials and methods. A total of 115 strains isolated from children with acute otitis media and 18 strains isolated from children with acute rhinosinusitis were tested. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by a broth microdilution method. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing results were interpreted according to the CLSI 2017 and EUCAST 2017 criteria.Results. Pneumococcal isolates obtained from the children with acute otitis media have the high rates (5074%) of nonsusceptibility to the majority of betalactams, 14/15/16membered macrolides, lincosamides, tetracyclines, folate pathway inhibitors. Rates of nonsusceptible to benzylpenicillin, amoxicillin, I...

The aim of this study was to: determine susceptibility patterns of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae to antimicrobial agents, evaluate macrolide resistance phenotypes and genotypes and identify capsular serotypes among invasive isolates of S. pneumoniae circulating in Serbia. The total of 85 invasive pneumococcal strains, collected during 2012 and 2013, were sent from regional laboratories to the National Reference Laboratory. Susceptibility testing was performed by disk diffusion and E test, while phenotypes and genotypes of macrolide resistant strains were determined by double-test and PCR, respectively. Serotyping was performed by Quelling reaction. The overall penicillin and erythromycin non-susceptibility rates were 14.12% and 28.23%, respectively. Resistance rates were significantly higher in children than in adults and (p<0,01). Co-resistance to penicillin and erythromycin was detected in 7.06% strains. Resistance rates to tetracycline and chloramphenicol were 29.41% and 1...

Introduction: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). In Serbia, pneumococcal conjugate vaccines PCV-10 and PCV-13 were licensed for immunization in 2018. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of S. pneumoniae isolated from patients with pneumococcal pneumonia. Material and methods: Isolates of S. pneumoniae were recovered from patients with CAP addmitted to 18 hospitals throughout Serbia from 2012-2020. Confirmation of the identification was performed using lytA gene detection by PCR. Serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by Quellung reaction and disk diffusion/gradient test, respectively. Interpretation of the susceptibility testing was done according to the current European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing recommendations. Results: During the study period, a total of 100 isolates of S. pneumoniae were collected. Overall, 19 pneumococcal...

Background. Vaccination against pneumococcal infection is one of the priorities in improving the quality of treatment and prevention measures in adults with various pathologies. The effectiveness of vaccination is directly related to the individuals ability to form an adequate specific immunity. Aims the aim of the study was to assess the level of post-vaccination antibodies to capsular polysaccharides of S. pneumoniae in adult patients with bronchial asthma (BA) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after administration of 13-valent conjugated pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13). Materials and methods. The ELISA method was used to determine the level of IgG antibodies to 12 capsular polysaccharides serotypes 1, 3, 4, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, 23F of S. pneumoniae that are part of PCV13, and 2 serotypes 9N, 15B that are not part of the vaccines using research test systems developed on the basis of the I.I. Mechnikov Research Institute of Vaccines and Sera. Groups of adul...

The introduction of pneumococcal vaccines into national immunization programmes around the world has reduced the incidence of pneumococcal vaccine serotypes, but had no influence on the incidence of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 3 included in their composition. The results of evaluation of epidemiological efficacy and immunogenicity of capsular polysaccharide of S. pneumoniae serotype 3 capsular polysaccharide (CP) in conjugated and polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccines are contradictory. Some studies have shown the effectiveness of vaccination, other studies indicate insufficient immunogenicity and prophylactic efficacy of S. pneumoniae serotype 3 CP. The authors’ analysis of the results of clinical studies showed that the prophylactic efficacy of S. pneumoniae serotype 3 CP depends on the type of vaccine, nosological form of the disease, age, immunization schedule. According to the literature data, the most informative parameter of the protective activity of S. pneumoniae CP in...

Objective. To estimate the prevalence of S. pneumoniae serotypes in adults aged of 18 years and older, including healthy carriers and patients with acute otitis media (AOM), community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and invasive pneumococcal infection (IPI). Materials and Methods. A total of 230 isolates of S. pneumoniae from 10 centers were included in the study from 01.06.2019 to 01.10.2019. Re-identification and typing using real-time PCR with 22 primer pairs were performed in the central laboratory (Institute of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Russia). Results. In healthy nasopharyngeal carriers (n = 31), the following serotypes of S. pneumoniae were detected: 19F (29.0%), 6А/В (22.6%), 3 (16.1%), 11A/D and 23F (9.7% each), 23A (6.4%), 14 and 15A/F (3.2% each); PCV-13 and PPV-23 covered 80.6% and 90.3% of those serotypes, respectively. In patients with AOM (n = 18), serotypes were: 3 (16.7%), 11A/D and 6A/B (11.1%, each), 16, 19А, 19F, 23F, 7A/F (5.55%, each); PCV-13 and PPV-23 covered 50%...
