Mapping the Competitive Advantage of SMEs in East Java, Indonesia

This article describes the situation and potential of SMEs in East Java Indonesia. Small and medium enterprises are essential to support the economic progress of a country. By using descriptive analysis and multiple regression then generated mapping. Mapping the characteristics and competitiveness of SMEs is done as a basis for gap analysis. If the current condition of Indonesian SMEs is known, benchmarking can be done by comparing ideal conditions or targets to be achieved in the face of global competition. The mapping generated from this research is expected to provide an overall picture of SMEs in disrict of Jember, Bondosowo, Situbondo and Banyuwangi, East Java Province, Indonesia, so that it can assist government and business actors in determining business strategies and policies. Strategic Model in Increasing the SMEs Competitive Advantage in South Sulawesi

The study of SMEs development has become an interesting issue in the field of education including because of its great contribution to society and nation. The research objectives are to describe 1) the effect of government intervention toward the increase of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) innovation capabilities and competitive advantage in South Sulawesi; 2) the effect of non-market capabilities toward non market strategies and competitive advantage of SMEs in South Sulawesi; 3) the effect of non-market capabilities toward government intervention. The data used is the primary data which was obtained from interviews with 40 respondents in Makassar, Parepare, Sidenreng Rappang and Bantaeng. The sample from which data collection done is selected using purposive sampling method. Results are presented in descriptive and inferential statistics. The research results show that innovation, government intervention, nonmarket strategies and capabilities are prerequisite to improve SMEs competitiveness. In addition, the small businesss competitiveness will significantly change when the innovations undertaken are influenced by government intervention.

COMPETITIVE STRATEGY AND BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT ON SMEs PERFORMANCE IN YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA

SMEs have an important role in Yogyakarta. Currently, SMEs are faced with something difficult and task that is to maintain SMEs to remain competitive, which involves the existence also their future growth. To support Yogyakarta SMEs in maintaining and enhancing competitiveness, a theoretical framework was developed through the organization of theories and findings when studying SMEs in Yogyakarta. This framework explores competitive strategies and the business environment that affect the performance of Yogyakarta SMEs. The population in this study were SME sectors in industry groups furniture, leather goods, and food processing industries, totaling 118 business units. This study uses cluster sampling. The analytical method used is multiple regression analysis. In light of information gathered from SMEs in Yogyakarta, this examination affirms the centrality of serious procedures to pick up their upper hand. International Conference on Small and Medium Enterprises Development with a Theme (ICSMED 2012) Barrier Factors and Potential Solutions for Indonesian SMEs

Facts that Indonesian SMEs have a great potency related with the ability to survive in crisis times do not lead to products capability. Moreover, several factors became reasons why the image of Indonesian SMEs does not emerge significantly; inability in competing in global market and the outcome will be obtained in measurement form consisting several barrier factors faced by SMEs. The methodology adopted in this research is critical literature reviews, quantitative and qualitative data collection through questionnaires to 200 respondents and in-depth interviews with each of them. The research showed there are ten major barriers faced by SMEs: competition barriers; financial access; price of energy; technology; inefficient production cost; economic factors; management skill; process; limitation of sales; and raw material. Most SMEs agreed that government should dedicate more efforts in certain actions to eliminate SMEs barriers, like security standards improvement, development programmes, good financing policy, rational energy policy, continuous performance evaluation, commitment of corruption termination, and many supporting program needed by SMEs. Hereinafter, this research could contribute government programmes for empowering SMEs as the pillars of Indonesian economy.

Identification of Factors Influencing the Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have an important role in economic development in Indonesia. The increasing number of SMEs caused competition becomes increasingly fierce. This made SMEs experiencing more severe challenge to be able to maintain their existence and expand its business. Performance measurement for SMEs is still not well established such as the performance measurement in the big company. This paper aims to propose a conceptual framework for measuring the performance that can be used by SMEs. Several factors are proposed including entrepreneurial aspects, competence of human resource, innovativeness, and sustainability. The method used in this study is quantitative method with conduct a survey in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Bandung. The result from this study is a conceptual framework for measuring the performance of SMEs, in which each factor has a significant correlation to the performance measurement of SMEs. This research is expected to contribute as the literature used by academics and SMEs to effectively measure SMEs performance, especially in a competitive environment.

The Effectiveness of SMEs: Exploratory Study of SME Owners Competency in Indonesia

This study investigated the competencies of business owners that distinguish the effectiveness of SMEs in Indonesia. We conducted in depth interviews with 10 successful SME owners and 10 static SME owners in Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia. We obtained data of SME owners from The Department of Cooperatives and SME in Surabaya and used structured interviews that include questions about the ability of the business owners in their role as leaders and managers. This study found that there are 48 competency items of successful SME owners. Out of these 48 items, there are 27 items of competency associated with successful SME owners, but not the owners of static SMEs.
