Background: Bibliometric analysis provides insight into knowledge gaps of a specific field. We want to know what part of medical care has been the subject of research in a group of Mexican physicians. The Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) cares for a wide spectrum of disease and it provides a unique vision of what specialists has investigated about health. Methods: Papers belonging to “ISSSTE” affiliation were harvested and downloaded to .csv Excel files from the Scopus database including most bibliometric variables. VOSviewer, biblioshiny and bibliometric were used to conduct the bibliometric. Results: 2,063 papers were found and re-trieved; internal medicine had the greatest number of papers with 831; nine institutions were listed claiming “ISSSTE” as their mother affiliation; original papers represent 82% of the total and 52% of them were written in Spanish. Research production in Mexico City and the most productive center is Cent...
Assessment of the scientific output of Hospital de Niños Pedro de Elizalde, 2000-2011
Archivos Argentinos de Pediatria, 2014
1ntroduction. Monitoring article submissions and publications developed by an institution is a suitable measure to assess its scientific output. Objectives. To estimate the proportion of research projects that were completed and had results submitted/published by a pediatric hospital; to describe research project design and characteristics; to outline limitations on research development or dissemination. Methods. Descriptive and analytical study including scientific studies approved to be developed between 2000 and 2011. Each investigator was contacted and asked to participate in a survey on research development, result dissemination and possible reasons for not completing or disseminating a study. Results. The survey was completed by the authors of 197 projects (60.9% completed, 16.2% ongoing, 12.7% cancelled, and 10.2% put off). Drug trials were most likely not to be completed. Of all completed projects (n = 120), 45.8% were clinical research studies, 43.3% were epidemiological studies, and 10% were related to health services. When analyzed by design, 77.5% were observational studies while 22.5% were experimental ones. In terms of scope, 69.1% were restricted to the hospital, 16.6% were international multicenter studies, and 14.1% were national multicenter studies. Only 36.6% of projects received funding. Lack of time (20%) and insufficient sample size (10%) were the most commonly indicated reasons for non dissemination. A total of 78.3% of projects were presented in conferences and 37.5% were published. The presence of funding was the only independent predictor of publication. Conclusions. Of all approved projects, 60.9% were completed; of them, 78.3% were presented in conferences and 37.5% were published. Drug trials were most likely not to be completed, and funded studies had more chances of being published.
Investigación y Educación en Enfermería, 2015
Objective. This work sought to characterize the scientific production of the degree works in the Master's in Collective Health (MCH) of the Faculty of Nursing at Universidad de Antioquia, during the period from 1996 to 2013. Methodology. Ours was a descriptive, observational study, based on documentary research and content analysis. The work analyzed the degree works presented in the MCH since 1996 until 2013, reported in the library of the Faculty of Nursing, and the scientific articles published. These were reviewed manually using an instrument containing the variables of the characteristics of the works and articles. Results. Some 51 degree works were included, corresponding to eight cohorts from the Master's in which 65 master's students have graduated and 61 professors have participated as counselors. The most common themes have been Gender and Health (27%) and Food and Nutrition Safety (16%). The most frequent populations object of study were women (14%) and population groups and/or community (14%). The methodologies used have been 90.2% qualitative, 3.9% quantitative, and 5.9% mixed. A total of 52.9% of the degree works were published as articles in scientific journals; of these, 46.49% corresponded to A2 journals, according to the classification by COLCIENCIAS. Conclusion. The characteristics of the degree works show increased dissemination in scientific journals, as well as diversification in the populations object of study and progress in the dissemination of the knowledge generated in the MCH, thus, contributing to progress in collective health in national and international settings.
The scientific production of medical students in Lima, Peru
Heliyon, 2020
Background: Research is an important undergraduate competence for physicians. However, few studies have assessed the scientific production of medical students in Latin-America. Thus, this study had the objective to assess the rate and characteristics of research publications by undergraduate medical students in 2016, in Lima, Peru. Methods: This cross-sectional study included all the students of the eight medical schools in Lima (Peru). The medical students included were collected from the registry of the National Medical Examination (taken during their last year of undergraduate studies) in 2016. To evaluate their research publications, systematic searches were performed in Google Scholar and PubMed during August 2018. Results: We studied data from 1241 medical students (54.2% females) from eight medical schools. 173 (13.9%) students published at least one paper, 102 (8.2%) published at least one original paper, and 30 (2.4%) published at least one original paper in PubMed-Indexed journals. We registered a total of 174 papers authored by medical students, of which 98 (56.3%) were published in Peruvian journals, 128 (73.6%) were published in Spanish, 90 (51.7%) had a medical student as the first author, and 43 (24.7%) had a medical student as the corresponding author. The percentage of students with at least one publication was very heterogeneous across the eight medical schools evaluated (63.6%, 21.4%, 16.8%, 15.1%, 8.2%, 2.0%, 1.9%, and 0.0%). Conclusion: Among medical students in Lima, one out of seven had published at least one paper, one out of 12 had published at least one original paper, and one out of 40 had published at least one original paper in PubMed-Indexed journals. Scientific production was very heterogeneous across medical schools.
