This study evaluated the use of Lecanicillium muscarium and Simplicillium lamellicola isolates, the commercial bioinsecticide Verticillium lecanii and two different insecticides against Aphis fabae at 20°C and 25°C. Cowpea, Vigna unguiculata ((L.) Walp; Fabales: Fabaceae), is an important indigenous vegetable and grain legume in the tropics where it represents a major diet component. Cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora (Koch; Hemiptera: Aphididdae) is a major pest causing up to 100% yield losses. Aiming at establishing alternative approach to synthetic insecticides, we evaluated the pathogenicity of 23 fungal isolates including Metarhizium anisopliae ((Metschn.) Sorokin; Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae), Beauveria bassiana ((Bals.) Vuill.; Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae), and Isaria sp. (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) against adult A. craccivora in the laboratory. According to the importance of non-chemical controlling methods based on integrated pest managment, Beauveria bassiana was considered as a pathogen of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi. In this study, the pathogenicity effects of some Iranian isolates of B. bassiana against adult aphids were evaluated using the spray bioassay method. Seven isolates, including DEBI 001, DEBI 002, DEBI 003, DEBI 006, DEBI 008, DEBI 010 and DEBI 015, were cultured on the SDA medium and incubated under dark conditions at 25°C for 15 days. The minimum and maximum dosages of each strain was determined and then 5 different conidial concetrations were prepared based on the logarithmic distances Experiments were carried out based on RCD, and repeated 4 times and for each replicate 20 adult aphids were treated. The control aphids were treated with distilled water_tween 80. Treated aphids put in plexiglass cups in an incubator at 25±2°C, and mortality was recorded daily for 5 day. Data were analyzed using SAS (6.2) and Curve Expert 1 4 to determine LC50 and LT50. Entomopathogenic Fungi on Fabae bean Aphid, Aphis craccivora (Koch) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

The Aphids, Aphis craccivora (Koch) is a serious pest in agricultural fields in Egypt. Entomopathogenic fungi are biological control agents of insects. The study was carried out on the aphid by using of Bio Catch, Verticillium lecanii, Bio Power, Beauveria bassiana and Bio Magic, Metarhizium anisopliae on A. craccivora. Laboratory experiments were done to measure the pathogenicity of three commercial compounds from entomopathogenic fungi, Bio Catch, V. lecanii, Bio Power, B. bassiana, and Bio Magic, M. anisopliae against adults and nymphs of A. craccivora. Three concentrations were used from all compounds, 107 , 108 and 109 spores/ml. at 22 ± 2°C and 75 ± 5 R.H. The concentration (109 spores/ml.) gave 100% mortality with V. lecanii and B. bassiana then M. anisopliae. In the recent study, the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana was used to evaluate its pathogenecity against adults of different aphid species i.e., Schizaphis graminum, Rhopalosiphum padi, Brevicoryne brassicae and Lipaphis erysimi, and their natural enemy Coccinella septempunctata. B. bassiana was found effective at all concentrations i.e., 1×10 6 , 1×10 7 and 1×10 8 spores/ml on all aphid species, but the uppermost concentration (1×10 8 spores/ml) provided maximum control within short period of time (P < 0.0001). B. bassiana with LC 50 value of 6.28 × 10 5 proved to be lethal to B. brassicae after 3 rd day. Mortality of L. erysimi was observed maximum on highest concentration of 1×10 8 spores/ml with LC 50 value of 1.36 × 10 6 , while the LT 50 values were in range of 2.19-3.73 days for different aphid species treated at various concentrations. B. bassiana showed little or no detrimental effects to C. septempunctata. By testing the field efficacy of B. bassiana against aphid species, this insect pathogenic fungus can be used as potential biocontrol agent for the management of aphids.

We evaluated the sublethal (LC 25) effects of the three native strains of two important entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) species (Metarhizium anisopliae AB, M. anisopliae Iran 245, and Beauveria bassiana 106) on the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L. (Hemiptera: Aphididae) which is among the most destructive pests of cole crops. Studies were carried out in controlled conditions providing 25 ± 2 °C, 60% ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L:D). The age-stage, two-sex life table method was used for data analysis. The results indicated that EPF treatments affected the population growth rate of the aphids by causing prolongation of the development time, decrease in survival rate, shortening of adult longevity, and decrease in reproduction. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) and the finite rate of increase (λ) reflecting combined effects of all life history parameters were the highest in the control group and the lowest in M. anisopliae AB treatment. Similarly, the mean generation time was the shortest in the control treatment and the longest in M. anisopliae AB group. The overall results demonstrated that EPFs tested in this study could be considered an alternative option in the IPM programs against cabbage aphid, and M. anisopliae strain AB is the most promising EPF for further evaluation.
Impact of Entomopathogenic Fungi Beauveria Bassiana and Isaria fumosorosea on Cruciferous Aphid
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the role of two entomopathogenic fungi: Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) and Isaria fumosorosea (Wize) against the adults of cruciferous aphid (cabbage aphid), Brevicoryne brassicae L. under laboratory conditions at plant protection institute, Sharkia Branch. Three tested concentrations (10P 5 P , 10P 6 P and 10P 7 P spores/ml) of B. bassiana formulations were used against aphid B. brassicae. Mortality percentage after 7 days of application showed 35.55, 46.66 and 64.44%, respectively. The obtained results revealed that LCR 50 R was 1.1×10P 6 P spores/ml and LCR 90 R was 3.4×10P 9 P spores/ml. While, Three tested concentrations (10P 6 P , 10P 7 P and 10P 8 P spores/ml) of I. fumosorosea formulation were used against the same aphid. Mortality percentage after 7 days of application showed 37.77, 60.0 and 73.33%, respectively. The obtained results revealed that LCR 50 R was 3.9×10P 6 P spores/ml and LCR 90 R was 2.1×10P 9 P spores/ml.

Given the aphids high reproductive capacity, assessing their biocontrol by using entomopathogenic fungi is crucial; to determine their potential, fungi were tested in planta and in field conditions. Significant decrease of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) population was observed in planta after applying Beauveria bassiana (strain 7R), Trichoderma gamsii (strain Z) or Metarhizium brunneum (strain Meta Br1) at 1 × 107 or 1 × 108 conidia/mL on pepper plants. Significant differences of aphids’ populations were detected between fungus concentration and control (F = 68.743, df = 6.980, P <0.001), where M. brunneum at 1 × 108 conidia/mL reduced aphids population close to zero. At 20 °C, dead aphids’ mycosis by B. bassiana and T. gamsii was 78% and 84%; at 25 °C was 83% and 88%; and at 30 °C was 75% and 79%, respectively.
