The study aimed to analyze the process and workplace layout in the selected structural and fabrication shops located in Batangas, Philippines thus provide improvements using the results of Ergonomic Design Measures. These shops generally focused on preparation, cutting, welding, grinding and assembly using multi-functioning machines and many aspects of human work. Using different Ergonomic Assessment Checklist, Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Ovako Working Posture Assessment System (OWAS), and with direct observations, it was found out that existing design of the work processes and workplace layout does not match the ergonomic requirements. The study exposed the presence of Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD) risks due to awkward posture, forceful exertion and fatigue; position of workers is dangerous to themselves due to inappropriate measurement of facilities which is in need of change. The researcher recommended ergonomically based actions to address the health, comfort, and well-being of employees such as changing the workstation surface height, integration of safeguarding; application of Group Technology to reduce the production lead time and material handling and offered smooth workflow in production line. Furthermore, the researcher developed a proposed workstation and workplace design as part of the ergonomic-based actions. The effectiveness of the proposed design alternatives were measured with the use of Trade-off Analysis technique, such as, Standard Weighted Sum Method, MAXIMIN decision and Analytic Hierarchy Process.

Investigation of ergonomic working conditions of sewing and cuttingmachine operators of clothing industry

Industria Textila, 2021

The textile industry is a very labour intensive industry which mainly comprises of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).In developing countries, usually occupational health and safety programs are focused on large-scale organisations. Across-sectional study on evaluating ergonomics risk factors associated with task performing strategies has been carriedout at cutting and sewing units of a garment industry organisation. A reliable direct observational ergonomics riskassessment method Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) was used to find out the risk associated with workingpostures adopted by the workers. Data was collected through physical observations, walkthrough, interviews, and videorecordings. Data analysis was carried out on 180 selected postures by using REBA method. It concluded that overallworking strategies were poorly designed as more than 30% of postures highlighted a high level of risk of MSDs thatnecessitates immediate investigation for improvement. Major causes of risk w...

Utilization of Participatory Ergonomics for Workstation Evaluation Towards Productive Manufacturing

International Journal of Engineering and Advanced Technology (IJEAT), 2019

Principles of workstation configuration decrease work environment ergonomic hazards and improve worker's productivity. The participatory ergonomics approach is one of the best methods for eliminating or upgrading manual tasks with the aim of reducing the occurrence of related occupational musculoskeletal issue. This study assesses the workstation of a foundry shop in terms of musculoskeletal occurrences and ergonomic hazards employing Ergonomic Symptom Survey, Illumination Measurement, Noise Measurement, and Postural Analysis using REBA and RULA. The molding area average lux reading of 97.12 was far below the recommended light levels set by the DOE. The production area produces unbearable noises. REBA and RULA results reveal that activities in the foundry shop are very risky and need immediate investigation and changes. In general, the workstation is not properly layout. Improvement of material handling equipment such as the use of trolleys, rolling shelves or belt conveyors lessen the transfer time from one process to another leading to reduction of the current production time. In most cases, maintaining health and safety practices provides a much better way for the production performance of the foundry shop as well as its workers.

A Case Study on Industrial Ergonomics

Iconic Research and Engineering Journals, 2022

Ergonomics is the study of how working conditions, machines and equipment can be arranged in order that people can work with them more efficiently. The general approach for designing the work place for the positive outcome of the worker and the corresponding factors. Industrial Ergonomics is a science on how to fit the task and working environment the worker using scientific data drawn from a variety of disciplines. In Industrial System, the science of ergonomics seeks to adapt the job and workplace to the worker by designing tasks within the workers capabilities and limitations. The term ergonomics is neutral, takes no sides, neither of employers nor of employees. The various applications of industrial ergonomics which indirectly plays a vital role in the output of the respective industry. When the ergonomic is set right there is increase in the worker efficiency as well as the output. There is drastic reduction in the injuries to workers when the ergonomics is set up in the right way

Ergonomic Evaluation of Work Stations Related With the Operation of Advanced Manufacturing Technology Equipment: Two cases of study

This paper presents two cases of study where ergonomic evaluations were conducted in work stations related with the operation of Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) equipment: Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling Machine and (CNC) Lathe. The Marley and Kumar (1996) Body Map format among 10 workers was conducted for pain in discomfort study and Hignett and Mc Atamney (2000) REBA method was used for ergonomic evaluation. Shoulders, middle back, hand and arm pain was identified. The evaluation results indicated a medium risk level for both work stations according to REBA. Recommendations for changes in equipment components and the work station are presented and it is found that models that would help identify and evaluate ergonomic aspects related with AMT equipment are desirable among decision makers, owners and users.
