Terrorism in Popular Media: How Hollywood Represent Muslim Terrorist

Movie has significant function not only as an entertainment but more importantly it also functions to document the historical events, to negotiate or even challenge the existing norms in the society. This paper discusses how Hollywood movies represent the discourse of Muslim terrorist. The movies share similar theme of Muslim terrorism; they are “The Siege” (1998) and “Syriana”(2005). The question presented here is how the movies represent the discourse of Muslim terrorism. This question critically addresses the issue of different faces of “Muslim terrorist” represented in the Hollywood films and the ideas or ideology underlied. The films are analysed through the lenses of critical discourse analysis (CDA). Fairclough’s CDA discover the discourse through three levels of analysis, micro, meso and macro analysis. This article provides a textual and visual analysis of Hirsi Ali and van Gogh’s controversial short film Submission (2004) and Marc Forster’s The Kite Runner (2007). Emphasis is placed on rhetorical and plot strategies, aimed at reinforcing unproductive Orientalist stereotypes of Islam and Muslims. The aim of this analysis is to find out how Muslims and Islam are presented in Submission and The Kite Runner, based on E. Said's (1978) work “Orientalism” and to identify Theo van Gogh's assassination, influenced public attitudes towards Muslims. The cinemas of Arab and Muslim societies encompass a substantial number of film genres produced locally or in the diaspora. Arab and Muslim filmmakers experiment with different cinematic narratives, styles, and hybrid forms: auteur, documentary, diasporic, migrant, Third Cinema, and transnational productions. Their richness, diverse thematic foci, creative stylistic characteristics, and ability to reach global audiences recently motivated film scholars and other academics in Europe and the United States to consider designating a category called “Muslim Cinema” and defining its contours. The significance of movies in information dissemination and ideological creation through language is undeniable. This study aims to investigate how Hollywood movies and documentaries depict Muslims. Specifically, this study examines the different forms of language expressions of Muslims based on the film directors' and writers’ descriptions and justification for their actions and beliefs. This study also explores ‘The Kingdom’, a movie produced after the 9/11 twin tower attack. Critical discourse analysis a research tool used to analyze the movie content. This movie is a terrorism genre, where Muslims have negative roles and are depicted as terrorists. The 3D model of Fairclough is utilized to reveal the ideological manipulations and representations of Muslims in Hollywood movies.
