Using action inquiry to address critical challenges (original) (raw)

Emerging Action Research Traditions

International Journal of Adult Vocational Education and Technology, 2016

The authors argue here that contemporary use of action research shares the exploratory, inductive nature of many qualitative research approaches—no matter the type of data collected—because the type of research problems studied are set in complex, dynamic, rapidly changing contexts and because action research is undertaken to support social and organizational change that requires buy-in from many stakeholders affected by the research problem. Action research serves as a critique and alternative to more traditional views of social science. In this article, the authors first describe action research as defined by Kurt Lewin, its originator. They show how two variants of action research—Action Science and Collaborative Developmental Action Inquiry—advance insight into how action research can be used to develop personal capability to address system changes that action research seeks to unveil. By using the example of an innovative action research approach to doctoral research, the autho...

Action Research - A New Look

In this study an attempt has been made to answer the question "What is Action Research?" giving an overview of its processes and principles, stating when it is appropriate to use, and situating it within a praxis research paradigm. The definition and evolution of the approach is described, including the various kinds of action research being used today. The action research process and its nature have been discussed from different scholars' point of view. This article also seeks to add a new dimension to, and way of thinking about, the cyclical process underlying action research and its relationship to problems and learning issues. The nature of action research highlights six different key principles as well as situates it in a research paradigm followed by different types of action research along with its characteristic issues and ethical considerations. Finally, this study has revealed that action research is deliberate and solution-oriented investigation that is group or personally owned and conducted.

Action Research in Practice: Balancing the Dual Imperatives

This paper provides a description of and reflections on an action research project. The project is described from its initialisation and conceptualisation through to the completion of the engagement with the clients of the problem-solving exercise. It is hoped that the reflections on the key issues of the action research project will provide opportunities for discussion and learning among readers.

Reflections on Action Research: Uncovering My Assumptions

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

I have engaged in action research for several years in different settings and for different purposes. At the elementary level I have used action research to try to understand my students' view of the culture of our classroom, (presentation, OERC, 1996) and to make a geometry unit come alive (International Reading Association, 1996). At the secondary level, I used Action Research to develop a leadership program (Teachers College Press, 2001) and to help my fellow DICEP members and me understand the functioning of our own research group (Orbit, 1998). In this phase of our collaborative action research group we, DICEP (Developing Inquiring Communities in Education Project) are being funded by the Spencer Foundation for a specific project. We proposed to include our learners as co-researchers in investigating the activities and conditions that facilitate their learning. In addition to providing learning experiences that meet curricular or organizational goals, we planned to help our learners develop valuable assessment and metacognitive skills.

Action Research: From Theory to Practice

International Journal of Applied Sciences: Current and Future Research Trends , 2022

Action Research is a research approach that is constantly evolving in social sciences and management. Although this approach is deemed contentious, many positivist researchers have expressed their dissatisfaction and questioned its validity as a scientific methodology that adheres to rigorous research methods and standards. On the other hand, several researchers, particularly those who are considered practitioners of applied research, have discussed and defended action research as a viable methodology for generating knowledge, developing solutions, and contributing to the knowledge development of one's own, one's organization's, and one's community, while promoting and taking actions to solve business and socioeconomic problems in a rapidly changing and unpredictably volatile environment. Historically, the validity of Action Research as a branch of epistemology has been debated in conjunction with the topic of the validity of Action Research in relation to traditional research. This research paper is an attempt to discuss and clarify the ambiguity behind the characteristics of the action research and present its most essential aspects and competitive advantages in different field, with strong emphasize on the role of researchers or practitioners and their active collaboration with organizations to generate sustainable action-based learning and integrated at the individual and organizational levels.
