The aim of this study is to pursue the history and development of leading national European theories briefly in respect to ancient buildings, the cross maturation of these mindsets, and their contribution towards initial movements and current fertility of international approach in the treatment of historic monuments and sites. The general development of the concept is accompanied by a critical selection of the most significant theories and their relationship with current practice in the relevant cultural heritage context. The study intents to give a general consciousness about the process of the development of traditional approach to the treatment of medieval structures which first was particularly proposed as 'restoration movement' in the nineteenth century (Sir George Gilbert Scott, Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, etc.), the 'anti-restoration movement' or 'conservation movement' emphasizing the material authenticity and documentary value of the monuments (John Ruskin , William Morris, Camillo Boito, etc.), and the modern conservation theory which was based on a critical historical restoration of the work of art in its aesthetic, historical and use values (Alois Riegl , Cesare Brandi, etc.), and is reflected in the international level.
Best practice handbook. Contemporary realities and needs of sustainable urban rehabilitation, 2017
The first part of the study involved an investigation into the architect's training system. The specialist's education system has been analysed in "heritage protection and revitalisation of the cities". Another section of the research was conducted by analysing the requirements needed to prepare the different interventions on the existing one. At the same time, what are the rules of protection and the application of the doctrinal statements of national and international documents. The essay highlights how in some ancient Italian university sites, studies, research, the same training in the field of conservation/restoration of architectural, archaeological and historical-artistic assets are fundamental to the formation of architects, both in the traditional five-year and short-term, more master's degree. It is hoped that the final proposal for a revision of the Bologna process will be reached, and therefore to make conservation and restoration examinations mandatory at European level for a degree in architecture.

Several scholars have recently pointed out difficulties when intervening on old and historical buildings due to the inadequacy and incompatibility of actual codes' requirements in relation to the particular constructive, architectural and material characteristics of built heritage. As a result, this study aims identifying criteria to support a holistic methodology that assures maximum preservation of built heritage through minimum, but sustained interventions. In particular, it aims identifying heritage categories and values, as well as measures and levels of intervention through a systematic analysis of the codes and standards involving protection, conservation, rehabilitation and control of interventions on built heritage of three Southern European countries with similar cultural approaches: Italy, Spain and Portugal. The wide reflection and comparison of these documents allows discussing and pointing out different (and common) approaches and criteria; in particular, it underlines the need for inventorying and cataloguing methodologies and procedures.

An Architectural Project of Giovanni Maria Falconetto Discovered During the Restoration of the Alvise Cornaro House, 2019
The restoration of the courtyard of the house of Alvise Cornaro was carried out between 1983 and 2000. During this long period, the author produced several studies and projects, regularly debated with a high-profile interna- tional scientific commission. The house of Alvise Cornaro, in Padua, was reformed between 1524 and 1560 ca. and is one of the first architectures of the Roman Renaissance according to the Vitruvius canons built in northern Italy. This architecture has long established its reputation as a place for comedies and small concerts due to the presence of two buildings of great architectural quality: the Loggia and the Odeo. Based on observations and measurements, however, the restoration programme allowed us to recognize that architecture corresponds to a unitary project inspired by a kind of the domus canonized in the Vitruvius architecture treatise. The paper presents arguments and conclusions of this case study.

Venice is an extraordinary context, formed in ten centuries of history. The fact that it is unique and universal at the same time means it can inspire the discussion of themes of great interest for other cities. The link is the dialogue between ancient heritage, historical preservation and the eff ects of tourism. The topics covered are: 1. Monoculture tourism/economic diversification; 2. Changes to the city’s physical and commercial structure; 3. The residential issue; 4. Universities and student population; 5. Cultural production; 6. Innovation for accessibility; 7. The lagoon environment.
'The Governance of Urban Heritage', 2015 08 (text)
The term integrated conservation first entered the lexicon of urban heritage in the 1975 Council of Europe European Charter, recognising that the future of the architectural heritage depends on the weight attached to it within the framework of urban and regional planning. Since then, the agendas of sustainability, sustainable development and climate change have entered the debate, and various attempts have been made to re-position urban heritage from a specialist to a mainstream activity in the European context. In ‘The Geography of Urban Heritage’, we argued that the quantum of urban heritage recognised and appreciated today underscores a level of responsibility for the maintenance and processes of continuity whose realisation is beyond the scope and capacity of a specialist field. Additionally, that the complementary values of community, heritage, resource and usefulness, harnessed to common purpose, afford a potent combination for responding to the challenge. That article promoted the thesis that for urban conservation to become a mainstream activity, heritage professionals need to nurture relationships centrally within the broad discipline of geography – the core discipline of urban planning; and reciprocally, geographers need to recognise the vital role of urban heritage beyond a limited perception of its compass. The 2010 European Union Toledo Declaration acknowledged the importance of urban heritage, and defined the multiple dimensions of sustainability as economic, social, environmental, cultural and governance. Governance at the municipal level is the key to integrated urban planning policy and practice. This article explores current initiatives in the field and proposes directions for further research and implementation.

In the most important art cities, two main conditions indicate the complexity of the management of cultural sites. The first one refers to the co-existence of stratified culture places (in other words the historical-artistic goods) and those hosting the city main activity (for instance, the political and administrative one hosted in the historical building). As a consequence, there's need to make possible the circulation of persons and material goods. The second one refers to the necessity to have available huge innovative forms of financial and human resources to assign to the conservation and protection of the historical-artistic heritage. Due to these considerations, in Italy it is still difficult to define a strategic planning of intervention for the valorization of spread historical and cultural heritage. The paper aims at proposing some methodological disciplinary considerations that could address the study approach of sustainable planning of spread cultural heritage in hi...
