Demographic Profile of Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs in South Eastern Region -SER-of Sri Lanka

Abstract Kotler (1997) defines demographic variables as demographic characteristics such as age, gender, family size, income, occupation, and so on. Demographic profile of entrepreneurs is the demographic characteristics of micro, small and medium entrepreneurs who run entrepreneurships in South Eastern Region. Objective of this research is to identify the demographic profile of Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs in South Eastern Region of Sri Lanka. Population includes all Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs -MSMEoperating in South Eastern Region. 121 entrepreneurs have been selected as sample size using convenience sampling method. Data are presented and analyzed using Excel with a version of 2007. It is found that there are 57, 54 and 10 Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs who engage in micro, small and medium enterprises. Majority of the entrepreneurs who fall in the age category of 35 to 49 are young. Male entrepreneurs dominate female entrepreneurs. A majority of the entrepreneurs have 3 to 4 children as their family size. Entrepreneurs hide their definite income from their enterprises. Also, they occupy different roles in their business depending on the situation. A large number of entrepreneurs have studied G. C. E. (O/ L) and G. C. E. (A/ L). It is concluded that age, gender, family size, income, occupation and education have been identified as demographic profile of Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs in South Eastern Region of Sri Lanka.

RURAL ENTRREPRENEURES IN MICRO AND SMALL ENTERPRISES OPERATING ISSUES AND REMEDIES IN SELECTED VILLAGES OF CENTRAL TAMILNADU

This study was planned to appraise the factors that affect the performance of rural entrepreneurs in micro small enterprises located in central districts of Tamilnadu .It also gives the characteristics of rural entrepreneurs in micro small enterprises and the supports they acquire from Government, Financial institutions and NGO's, we have taken a sample of two hundred rural entrepreneurs as respondent for this study to engaged in five Industrial areas was taken for this pilot study using systematic sampling technique. In the process of respond the basic questions, a constructed questionnaire that include personal profiles, qualities of rural entrepreneurs and their enterprises, factors that affect the performance of rural entrepreneurs in micro small enterprises and supports received from central and state Government of India was framed well constructed questionnaire and measuring scales. Moreover, data collection were held with the rural entrepreneurs who are living and running the business in the rural side, After the data has been collected, it was analyzed using suitable statistical tools The results of the study indicates the personal qualities of rural entrepreneurs in MSEs and their enterprise affect their performance .It also shows that lack of own premises(land),financial utilization, management of competition, inadequate usage of training, awareness of latest technology and consumption and availability of raw materials were the key economic factors that affect the performance of rural entrepreneurs in Micro small enterprises. The study also found that bias of gender roles; social acceptability and network with outsiders were the major social factor that causes the performances of the rural entrepreneurs. Introduction Entrepreneurs are increasingly most recommended as an important source of economic growth, new product development and productivity, innovation and employment opportunities, and it is commonly known as a success key of economic revolution. Transforming the thoughts and ideas of individuals are converted into economic opportunities is the exact meaning of entrepreneurship. Annals reveals that economic development progress has been significantly advanced by practical consequences of people who are entrepreneurial and innovative thought holders, having interest and ability to exploit the favorable time to attain the goal and willing to take risks in his business. Entrepreneurship role and an entrepreneurial culture in overall economic and social development have many times been underestimated. Over the few years, however, it has become increasingly visible that entrepreneurs actually perform to contribute for economic development. However, the suggestive numbers of enterprises were owned by Urban Entrepreneurs (ILO, 2006). Development of Indian nation depends on development of rural areas, as vast majority of the population still reside at rural areas. More rural entrepreneurs promote business but only a few can sustain in their business. A major portion of rural entrepreneurs closed their business units due to lack of finance, marketing knowledge, etc. The result of the study disclosed that economic, general and social are the major problems faced by rural entrepreneurs in Central Districts of Tamil Nadu.

Promoting Entrepreneurship in Rural Communities

ABSTRACT The development of entrepreneurship can be a major means of fighting economic inertia in rural areas. In this paper, the researcher made an attempt to understand the determinant factors of entrepreneurial activity. 400 rural entrepreneurs are selected in 40 Villages of 8 Taluk in Karnataka State, India through multiple sampling methods. Research study involved an in-depth examination of entrepreneurial activity, socio-economic variables and motives associated with rural entrepreneurship. The Empirical Perspectives on Rural Entrepreneurship Development in India

Today, Indian economy is much highly dependent on rural economy as 72.2% of the total population lives in the rural areas where agriculture and allied activities are the major sources of income. True entrepreneurs are passionate, resourceful and are driven to succeed and improve. They are surely pioneers and are comfortable fighting on the frontline. Certainly, the great entrepreneurs are ready to be laughed at and criticised in the beginning because they can see their path and are also too busy working towards their dream and passion. In general, an entrepreneur is a businessperson who not only organises and conceives ventures but also frequently takes risks in doing so. Not all entrepreneurs are created equal and not all independent business people are true entrepreneurs. Rural entrepreneurship is starting of enterprises in the rural areas. Entrepreneurship certainly is a wise answer to solve the migration, unemployment and also to promote social and economic development in the rural areas. Strengthening of the rural villages will improve the rural economy and will also encourage the preservation of natural resources. There exists a wide gap between rural and urban areas today in terms of infrastructure, financial access and market, etc. To reduce the disparities, revitalizing the rural economy is very much important and it can be achieved by establishing entrepreneurial ventures in the rural areas. Especially rising rural income will have a multiplier effect by raising the demand for farm and non-farm services and products instigating the growth of employment opportunities. Government of India has been continuously assigning and striving for increasing the importance and support for the growth and promotion of rural entrepreneurship. Some of the major obstacles for growth of rural entrepreneurship are risk aversion, less technical knowhow, lack of skilled labour, lack of communication facilities, limited access to essential services, etc. This paper provides an insight into the present scenario of rural entrepreneurship, meaning, qualities required for an entrepreneur, challenges and opportunities faced by entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship as a career and institutions promoting rural entrepreneurship and their role in fostering and developing rural enterprises.

AN OVERVIEW OF PROBLEMS OF RURAL ENTREPRENEURS IN INDIA

India is the country of villages. Majority of the population are living in rural areas in India. People in rural areas suffer with unemployment, poor infrastructure facilities which may be solved with the development of the rural entrepreneurs. Rural entrepreneurs refer to those who carry out the business in rural areas with the utilization of local resources. But this rural entrepreneur is suffering with various problems like fear of risk, lack of finance, illiteracy, and competition from the urban entrepreneurs. Rural entrepreneurs increase the standard of living and purchasing power of the people by offering employment opportunity to the people in villages. This paper study the problems faced by the entrepreneurs and possible recommendation to overcome the problems.

Problems of Rural Entrepreneurship in the Central Districts of Tamilnadu

Rural entrepreneurship acts as a mechanism in controlling the migration of population from rural areas to semi urban and urban areas. Rural entrepreneur's acts as a catalyst for the rural development by utilizing the rural resources in an optimal manner and by offering employment opportunities to the rural masses. On the contrary it is also a fact that the majority of rural entrepreneurs is facing numerous problems like paucity of funds in promoting a business, poor knowledge on marketing, non-availability of raw materials in time etc. In this study an attempt has been made to find out the Problems faced by the entrepreneurs in the central part of Tamilnadu. Rural entrepreneurs play a vital role in the overall economic development of the country. The growth and development of rural entrepreneurship facilitate self employment, results in wider dispersal of economic and industrial activities and helps in the maximum utilization of locally available raw materials and labour.
