Transforming Pedagogies Through Digital Storytelling: Framework and Methodology (original) (raw)

The effectiveness of digital storytelling in classrooms: a comprehensive study. (Authors: Najat Smeda, Eva Dakich and Nalin Sharda)

In recent years the use of new technologies in educational systems has increased worldwide as digital cameras, personal computers, scanners, and easy-to-use software have become available to educators to harness the digital world. The impact of new technologies in educational contexts has been mostly positive as new technologies have given educators the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, skills, and therefore enhance the standard of education. Researchers have found that student engagement, achievement and motivation are enhanced through integration of such technologies. However, education systems still face many challenges: one of these challenges is how to enhance student engagement to provide better educational outcomes. It has become increasingly important to use innovative pedagogical models to engage learners. Digital storytelling is one of the innovative pedagogical approaches that can engage students in deep and meaningful learning. This research project aimed to create a constructivist learning environment with digital storytelling. The research investigated the pedagogical aspects of digital storytelling and the impact of digital storytelling on student learning when teachers and students use digital stories. A multi-site case study was conducted in one Australian school at primary and secondary levels. In selected classrooms, students and teachers had the opportunity to engage in innovative learning experiences based on digital storytelling. In order to enhance the reliability and validity of the research, multiple methods of data collection and analysis were used. Data was collected with qualitative and quantitative methods. An evaluation rubric was used to collect quantitative data, while interviews and observation were used to collect qualitative data. Data collection was guided by a mixed methods research design in order to evaluate if and how digital storytelling enhances teaching and learning outcomes. The findings from this study suggest that digital storytelling is a powerful tool to integrate instructional messages with learning activities to create more engaging and exciting learning environments. It is a meaningful approach for creating a constructivist learning environment based on novel principles of teaching and learning. Thus, this approach has the potential to enhance student engagement and provide better educational outcomes for learners. A Place for Digital Storytelling in Teacher Pedagogy

Universal Journal of Educational Research , 2017

Traditional school subjects are challenged by the acceleration of access to knowledge in the new age of media available to both teachers and students. Teachers who are socialised into existing traditional practices are now encouraged to introduce technology into their pedagogy. This Paper explores a particular way in which teachers can creatively introduce a new and useful technology known as Instructional Digital Storytelling (IDS), guided by the Technological, Pedagogi-cal and Content framework (TPACK) developed by Mishra and Koehler [1]. It illustrates how, through narrative inquiry , teacher experience of both the creation and use of Digital Storytelling for instructional purpose in a Secondary School setting, highlighted challenges, rewards, accelerated learning and developed a community of practice across subject disciplines. The focus is on the reconstruction of the experience of creating a Digital Story on four levels: a) Internal structures of blending voice over, imagery and sound to create a successful IDS; b) Experience of challenges and negotiations in crafting the story; c) Experience of sharing with students; d) Recognition of themes and patterns which may have emerged among the participants.

Integrate Digital Storytelling in Education

Journal of Education and Practice, 2015

In the 21st century, educators believe using technology can be an effective factor in education for the new generation, making educational goals easier to achieve. In fact, technology is being studied by teachers and implemented into classrooms for a positive effect on student learning. Many teachers are integrating multimedia tools in teaching students different skills including synthesizing, analyzing, evaluating, and presenting information. When students use technology, they learn to convert data into information and transform information into knowledge. Also, using multimedia tools gives students the opportunity to participate and interact in the classroom. Consequently, the trend for integrating technology into education has become more widespread in most schools today. Digital storytelling is one of the multimedia tools that can support teaching and learning as well as students' motivation. This research explores how digital storytelling can be an effective tool for both teachers and students in order to support learning and skills.

Digital Storytelling: A Powerful Technology Tool for the 21st Century Classroom

Theory Into Practice, 2008

Digital storytelling has emerged over the last few years as a powerful teaching and learning tool that engages both teachers and their students. However, until recently, little attention has been paid to a theoretical framework that could be employed to increase the effectiveness of technology as a tool in a classroom environment. A discussion of the history of digital storytelling and how it is being used educationally is presented in this article. The theoretical framework, technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK), is described, along with a discussion of how this model might be used with digital storytelling.

Pedagogical analysis of educational digital storytelling environments of the last five years

Procedia-Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2012

Digital storytelling, the modern and challenging successor of storytelling, emerged over the last few years as a powerful teaching and learning tool, engaging both teachers and their students. For the evaluation of Educational Digital Storytelling Environments (EDSE), pedagogical aspects of designing or using EDSE are much less frequently studied than technical ones. Thus, taking into account modern, social and constructivist views of learning, a new pedagogical evaluation model was created (Psomos & Kordaki, 2011), using sixteen pedagogical criteria-dimensions. In this paper, the aforementioned pedagogical evaluation model is used to pedagogically analyze EDSE of the last five years.

Digital Storytelling as Narrative Pedagogy

This paper explores an understanding of digital storytelling as a narrative pedagogical methodology. Through a review of literature, the authors situate the background, current application, and power of digital storytelling as an educational tool. Next an overview of a narrative orientation to teaching and learning as applied to digital storytelling is presented. Finally, the authors explore epistemological implications, process issues and appropriate learning outcomes for digital storytelling when embedded in a narrative pedagogical framework. Their primary premise is that an understanding and consideration of the narrative orientation to teaching and learning will enable educators to make more discriminating and effective use of digital storytelling.

Developing a framework for advancing e-learning through digital storytelling

Digital Storytelling is an innovative pedagogical approach that has the potential to engage learners in student-centered learning, and enhance learning outcomes across the curriculum. This paper describes how to develop a framework for advancing e-Learning systems through digital storytelling. It starts with an overview of digital storytelling and the learning environments, also describes some current models of digital storytelling. Furthermore, the paper discusses the benefits of digital storytelling in the classroom, and concludes with an overview of the research that needs to be conducted to test the efficacy of the proposed e-Learning Digital Storytelling framework on several dimensions.

Digital storytelling: a classroom experiment

2018

Storytelling is a powerful way to express ideas and communicate experiences. It takes place both through the spoken form and in writing. Storytelling has a been part of teaching since the definition of subjects, as far back as Aristotle (Alexander, 2011). According to Sharda (2007a), storytelling, in general is a powerful pedagogical paradigm that can be used to enhance learning outcomes for general, scientific and technical education. With the rapid development of information technology, "students live in a world that has been transformed by technology, and they are often referred to as 'digital natives' because their exposure to digital resources begins at birth" (Morgan, 2014, p.20).Thus, there is always an inertia in education for these two strands-that of storytelling and technology to converge, one such attempt is being made in this paper
