HLA profile of the donors in the Macedonian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (original) (raw)

2018, International Journal of Immunogenetics

Human Leucocyte Antigens (HLAs) are in the centre of attention of many researchers due to their high polymorphism (Mungall et al., 2003). The number of HLA alleles rises up to 17,000 (December 2017), located on several loci on the short arm of chromosome 6 (6p21.3) (Robinson et al., 2015), but the strong linkage disequilibrium between some of them, as well as positive selection, migration and admixture, give rise to different HLA "profiles" in different populations (Hughes & Nei, 1988; Shiina, Hosomichi, Inoko, & Kulski, 2009). The number of papers that show the HLA profiles of different populations and ethnic groups, as well as papers that combine and summarize these results (Nunes et al., 2010; Nunes, Buhler, Roessli, & Sanchez-Mazas, 2014), is constantly rising. Donor registries are used as biggest source for subjects in population studies in the recent years (Carvalho et al.,
