Approaches To Solve the Problem of Truancy among Secondary School Students in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia

This study examines approaches to solve the problem of truancy among secondary school students in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. The study investigated school-based interventions, role of teachers and role of parent teachers' association in solving truancy. Descriptive survey research design was used where self-administered questionnaires were given to 100 teachers and 100 parents in five selected secondary schools within Kuala Terengganu district. The schools include: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kompleks Gong Badak, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ibrahim Fikri, Sekolah Menengah Agama Khairiah, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Mengabang Telipot, and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Besar. The data obtained was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19.0. Descriptive statistics was used to determine the mean, frequency, percentages and standard deviation of the respondents. The findings of the study indicated that school-based interventions have a positive impact in solving truancy. Role of teachers was also found to have a significant impact in solving truancy. However, based on the result, role of parent teachers' association was significant in solving the problem of students' truants' behaviour. Finally, recommendations were given to school administrators, teachers and parents.

Psycho-Behavioural Factors Contributing To Truancy Among Malay Secondary School Students In Malaysia

Objective: Truancy is a disciplinary problem, which frequently occurs among school students and it has many contributory as well as interrelated factors. It is a growing problem in this country and it often becomes a prelude to other delinquent behaviours. The study objective is to determine the prevalence of truancy as well as factors related to it including psycho-behavioural factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 556 Malay student's selected using multi-stage sampling was conducted. Results: The overall prevalence of truancy is 30.2%. The predictors to truancy are age, students who frequenting entertainment centre, students who have not completed Quran recital, coping strategies using problems solving methods and time spent watching television/video. There is a significant association between truancy and psycho-behaviour such as watching video/internet pornography, frequenting entertainment centre, smoking, motorcycle racing and dating a special friend. Conclusion: Truancy is a social issue, which must be given serious attention by all concerned components of the society.

Truancy among students become a growing problem. The truancy problem has been manifested in different forms. Some students deliberately refuse to attend the full days of school, some students may attend school but run away after break, while some students arrive at school after break. Likewise, there are some students who attend school and stay in the class for lessons that they have interest in but internationally refuse to stay in class for lessons that they do not have interest in due the teacher's hostile attitude or hatred of the subject. Also, there are some students who attend school but do not go to their classes at all. Therefore, this paper explained the concept of truancy, causes, types, implications and intervention strategies for students with truancy. Lastly, conclusion and recommendations were provided.

Abstract- Truancy is deliberate absence from school on the part of learners without the knowledge and consent of parents. The aim of this study was to establish the factors that contribute to student’s absenteeism and their effects in secondary schools in Meru South District, Kenya. Pilot study was done in three schools from the neighboring Maara district. The study collected views from principals, class teachers, counseling teachers and form two students, purposive and stratified random sampling method was used to select a sample size 298 students 8 Principal 8 counseling teachers and 8 class teachers. Truancy Among Malaysian Students : An Analysis Based on Ethnicity

Truancy remains a significant problem in the education system of countries when schooling is made compulsory for at least eleven years. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors contributing to truancy and the mean differences among the constructs based on the students’ ethnicity. The sample consisted of 472 truants from three main ethnic groups in Malaysia who have been routinely absent from school for 10 days to more than 40 days per year. Data on students’ truancy were obtained from the school administration. Results demonstrated that students’ attitudes toward school, environment in school, school administration, teachers’ teaching, teacher’s personality, and environment outside school, peers and family are significant constructs for truancy. Significant mean differences were also found in constructs of environment in the school, school administration and environment outside the school based on ethnicity.

Prevalence of Truancy and Its Associated Factors among School-Going Malaysian Adolescents: Data from Global School-Based Health Survey 2012

This study aimed to examine the prevalence of truancy and its associated factors among school going Malaysian adolescents. The Malaysia Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS) was conducted from February to April 2012 involving 28,933 students aged 12-17 years old. A two-stage cluster sampling was used to select the schools and students with an overall response rate of 88.6%. The data were obtained using the GSHS questionnaire. The prevalence of truancy was 30.8% and significantly higher among male than female (32.9% vs 28.7%). The factors associated with truancy were current smoker (aOR: 2.23; 95% CI: 2.03-2.46), current drug user (aOR: 2.23; 95% CI: 1.52-3.29), current alcohol use (aOR: 1.39; 95% CI: 1.24-1.56), having been bullied (aOR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.22-1.42) and not currently live with both parents (aOR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.16-1.35). High truancy among school going adolescents warrants a new effective strategy to control truancy in Malaysia.

Investigation into the Causes of Truancy among Public Senior Secondary School Students in Azare Metropolis of Bauchi State, Nigeria

Abstract: Truancy is one of the problems affecting teaching and learning in our secondary schools these days. This study investigated the causes of truancy among public senior secondary school students in Azare metropolis of Bauchi state, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was used and the sampled was 357 which were selected from the population of 5,219 by using disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. A questionnaire was used in the collection of data for this study and simple percentage and frequency were used in the analysis. The study found out that the causes of truancy emanating from the home of the students include helping parents in the household work, looking after young children in the house, lack of recognition by the parents etc. The study also found out that some causes of truancy which emanate from the children include low intelligence, weak physical health, social and emotional, maladjustment etc. It was also found out that some causes of truancy emanating from the school include fear of teachers, fear of school activities, difficulties of school subjects etc. Finally, the study recommended that well trained teachers are to be employed, guidance and counseling offices and counselors are to be available in schools, conducive atmosphere in schools should be provided, clubs and societies should be reactivated, sport and recreational activities should be provided and maintained by the schools. An Investigation Into Some of the Major Causes of Truancy in

With the emergence of the Democratic South Africa, a number of disciplinary problems emerged. One of these problems is truancy of school children from schools. The South African Schools Act (1996, p. 6) provides that if a learner who is subject to “compulsory attendance ” fails to attend a school, the HODS (heads of departments) may take certain measures. These include among others informing their parents. This study tried to identify some of the major causes of truancy in area and came to conclusion on possible strategies to improve learner attendance, thus, minimizing juvenile delinquency, reducing school dropouts and protecting youth against drugs.
