PurposeThis study investigates the underlying indicators for measuring the smartness of buildings in the construction industry; where the Smart Building Technology (SBT) concept (which incorporates elements of the Zero Energy Building (NZEB) concept) could ensure efficient energy consumption and high performance of buildings.Design/methodology/approachAn overarching post-positivist and empirical epistemological design was adopted to analyze primary quantitative data collected via a structured questionnaire survey with 227 respondents. The mean ranking analysis and one-sample t-test were employed to analyse data.FindingsResearch findings revealed that the level of knowledge of smart building indicators is averagely high in the Ghanaian construction industry. Smart buildings (SBs) are developed in many different ways and are self-proclaimed smart. There are a great number of publications introducing smart systems using a wider range of tools and sensors. However, the level of smartness, functions of the smart system, and the usefulness of the system are not the same, which may give a wrong impression to clients or potential buyers of a building. Developing a scoring system that enables determining the overall smartness of a building is necessary. Despite the necessity, there is a dearth of studies in this area. Hence, the purpose of this study is to develop a scoring system to evaluate the level of smartness of Sri Lankan commercial buildings. Smart Building, A way to Achieve Sustainable Architecture
There are essential challenges for the future of smart buildings, such as taking a responsible approach towards nature. On this basis, this paper gives an overview of the potentials of smart buildings for sustainable architecture. In addition a survey is conducted on the subject of environmentally friendly energy supplies that are easy on resources and climate. Sustainable building implementation calls for a definition of regional parameters related to local materials, climate, cultural factors and living conditions that might be significantly different from the definitions found in developed countries. Awareness of the importance of developing smart buildings is increasing. Many definitions of “smart” are cited in the context of building projects, but a standard definition does not so far exist. Researchers and practitioners usually focus on one or few aspects and there is a lack of comprehensive classification of the most common issues associated with smart buildings. The objective of the research presented in this paper is to capture the perspective of professionals about smart buildings. After the pertinent literature is examined, three domains are identified, namely economic issues, energy consumption, and level of comfort. Construction managers are surveyed for their opinions about the issues associated with these three domains. The results indicate that the three domains are rated almost equally by the respondents, with energy consumption a little ahead of life-cycle costs and occupant comfort. Smart Buildings for A Sustainable Development
The use of sustainable technologies for buildings, with the goal of creating an environment for living and working that uses fewer resources and generates less waste, also aims to retrofit existing buildings to be more efficient in terms of energy and water. Many cities are following this way targeting both commercial and municipal buildings. These cities are called smart cities where all life processes and nerve centers of social life are read, in order to radically improve quality of life, opportunity, prosperity, social and economic development, thanks to the use of technology. This paper deals with the study of smart buildings within smart cities, namely the use in an integrated project of computer and telematics tools with automation organized systems and passive bioclimatic strategies in architecture, determining a socio-technical management of intelligent building. The article is the result of a research carried out within the framework of intelligent buildings in the last generation cities, such as those ones with zero emissions that are taking place in the Middle East countries (Dubai, Masdar, Tiajin, and Kochi). The topic deals with the issues of building automation as a form of technological intelligence and the study of those smart technologies integrated into the building envelope that improve its performances, making it more sustainable. The research methodology has provided a bibliographic retrieval on the state of the art and the latest technological trends in the building field, later has followed a theoretical and comparative approach of the examined technologies, which led to the development of reasoning on operation, performance and functional capabilities of a building that is both sustainable and home automation, to arrive at the final concept of sustainable intelligent building, able to combine the artificial intelligence, home automation, and technological devices of the architectural project to enhance the building energy performance. In this article we consider the ideologies that affect modern human life and smart architecture contribution used as tools to enable those ideologies. It is considered that the technological impact on human life is undeniable but, as well as making use of the technology environment, consideration is really required. Therefore, this study explores the role of smart structures and materials to create new buildings with sustainable architecture. First, such terms as green architecture and sustainable architecture are identified. Then, using smart technology in buildings and what it would be like, are defined. Various smartness used in the buildings, their outcomes, performances and roles are evaluated. Smart buildings' role in sustainable architecture is explained.
