Utilization of Web 2.0 tools in Select Indian Libraries: A study

Web 2.0 is seen as the second generation of the Web; and Libraries are among the early adopters of Web 2.0 tools, which they used to connect and communicate with their patrons. This paper provides a snapshot of prevalence of Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 tools with stress to implementation of Web 2.0 tools, which have numerous applications in Indian Libraries. Data was collected through content analysis of Websites of Indian libraries. The data collected revealed that overall 89 selected libraries comprising of special, college, university, school are using one or more Web 2.0 tools. The study identified the types of Web 2.0 tools used, number of tools used, and the different types of libraries, and number of libraries using them. The study revealed that Blog and Facebook are the most popular Web 2.0 tools used by university libraries and school libraries. School librarians were found to be the most passionate users of variety of Web 2.0 tools.
A Study of Web 2.0 Application in Libraries of Premier Institute of Gujarat

The present study is paying attention on the application of Web 2.0 technologies for providing information services in the Libraries of Premier Institute of Gujarat. The study explored what types of Web 2.0 tools were applied in such Libraries as well as their features and purposes. During the study, it was noticed that all Libraries deployed web 2.0 technology to provide information services. 66.7 percent of the Libraries applied RSS, vodcast, OPAC 2.0, Instant Messaging, Mashup, Social Bookmarking & Tagging where as 33.33 percent Libraries are using Blog, podcast, Social Networking Services, Google Docs and YouTube. In this survey none of the Libraries adopted wikis. According to the present and future needs of the users, the library personnel are to be proactive, skilled and passionate to provide the web based information services. At the same time the users are also required to be well versed with this kind of technology.
Application of Web 2.0 in academic libraries: a study of college libraries in Mumbai
Purpose – This paper aims to provide an overview of the application of Web 2.0 technologies in college libraries in Mumbai. The focus of the research was to explore tools of Web 2.0 technologies applied in such libraries as well as to find out problems behind non-application of such cost-effective tool in college libraries. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was conducted using Google Forms based LIS e‐mail discussion groups. College librarians serving in all types of college libraries in Mumbai participated in the study. Findings – Blogs and social networking sites were the most popular Web 2.0 technology applied by librarians. Lack of computer literacy, lack of awareness about the utilities of web 2.0 and non- availability of computers and internet facilities were the major hindrances of Web 2.0 adoption by librarians. Awareness and training programs could enable librarians to cope with Web 2.0 technologies. Practical implications – This study will create awareness among LIS professionals toward the use of advanced technology in their professional environment. The findings of this study will be a guidance tool for workshop and training organizers to provide essential skills to the library professionals for the successful adoption of Web 2.0 in college libraries. The paper concludes by offering best practices for implementing Web 2.0 tools in academic libraries. Originality/Value – This is the original study conducted on the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies in college libraries in Mumbai by using questionnaire as a tool of data collection and by studying different library blogs.

The present study aims to explore the use of Web 2.0 tools and technologies among the library professionals in academic libraries in India. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire mailed to respondents from 46 central university libraries in India. The findings suggest that there exists a fair level of awareness and familiarity with the Web 2.0 tools and technologies among the library professionals. The study provides useful insights to promote the use of Web 2.0 tools among the library professionals in Indian libraries.
The Application of Web 2.0 Tools in University Libraries of India

This research study aims to focus towards the application or evaluation of Web 2.0 tools in State University Libraries of India. The present study deals with the extent usage of Web 2.0 in State University Libraries of India.This research used content analysis based on quantitative and qualitative data which is collected by website observation and questionnaire method. Out of 348 Indian State University Libraries 69% of libraries are having official website and 31% of libraries are lacking any dedicated library webpage. It is found that 9.77% of the Indian State University Libraries were using Web 2.0 technologies to provide services to their users. It is found that the highest Web 2.0 application index is in state of Kerala. OPAC 2.0, Mashups, RSS, Social Bookmarking & Tagging, Social Networking Services, Vodcast and Blog are the most widely applied technology and YouTube, Google Docs, Instant Messaging, Wikis are the least used technology amongst respondent libraries.
This study aims to explore the awareness status of Web 2.0 tools among library and information science (LIS) professionals in the University Libraries of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The study used quantitative method to collect data from 73 LIS professionals in 18 public sector university libraries of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Inferential and descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze data using SPSS. It was observed from the findings that majority of LIS professional s possess good knowledge of MS Office; however, some senior librarians were less acquainted. Internet facility was available to 60 participants out of 66. Librarians were not familiar with many services of Web 2.0; however, Facebook, YouTube and Skype were most familiar among the librarians. Majority of the respondents had no experience of using podcasting, RSS feeds, LinkedIn, LibraryThing, Flickr and MySpace. On the other hand, e-mail services, Facebook and YouTube were founded to be the most commonly used Web 2.0 tools among respondents. Problems faced by majority of the respondents were power failure, lack of training, non-cooperation from higher authorities, low speed of internet and financial problems.The study presents an overall picture of Web 2.0 applications in university libraries of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and attempts to provide the readers with helpful information to better understand how their colleagues elsewhere are utilizing Web 2.0 tools in execution of library services
Applications of Web 2.0 tools are playing a significant role to enhance the best practices of library activities as well as on-line digital reference services. The tools are becoming more popular among avid users of this modern era as they are fast and effective tools for disseminating information. Use of these tools in a library will fascinate the users and disseminate information in a more attractive and agreeable medium. This paper is aimed at presenting the results of a study conducted in the central universities in Assam State on Web 2.0 applications among LIS professionals. During the survey, structured questionnaires were distributed randomly among LIS professionals and the responses were received with a rate of eighty eight percent. The comparative study revealed the respondents' awareness and rate of knowledge about the Web 2.0 tools in the central university libraries.
Awareness of Web 2.0 Technology in the Academic Libraries : An Islamabad Perspective
The main purpose of this study is to determine the awareness and extent use of Web 2.0 technology in the academic libraries of Islamabad, Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach The survey research methods was employed in this exploratory study through google forms on Awareness of Web 2.0 tools, the questionnaire were distributed among 100 library professionals of 43 Public and private sector universities based on Islamabad were selected for this study,72 questionnaires were received, showing a response rate of 72% per cent , the data were scrutinized and tabulated using MS Excel 2010 and SPSS. Findings-The study imply that the young library professionals are more interested in the activities of web 2. technology. In Web 2.0 applications the social networking sites are more usable for the marketing library services, so these tools can be used in order to provide latest and up-to-date information to the end users. The time consumption and and fear of misusing peroneal information are some major obstacles by using Web 2.0 technologies in the library services. Research limitations/implications As this research covering only Islamabad region of Pakistan, so, the research in future may be conducted in order to know more about these kind of applications in future in library services of Pakistan. Practical implications As this paper has justified the web 2.0 technologies in academic libraries of Islamabad , so, in future it may be considered as a guidance tools for the researchers in Pakistan and may be demonstrated while conducting research on Web 2.0 in its proper perspective. Originality/value This paper provides factual and reliable data on the same topic which will be valuable as justifiable by highlighting the same issue in future.

The paper aims to present the results of a survey of academic libraries about the adoption and perceived impact of Web 2.0 technologies. A total of 26 college libraries affiliated with Solapur University participated among the members. It was found that each library was using some form of technology, such as RSS, blogs, social networking sites, wikis, and instant messaging. Analyzing the entire college web technology usages, it is observed from the results that most of the web technologies are not used by the mainstream of the users due to lack of awareness, training, etc. Accurate and appropriate training should be conducted by the colleges' Libraries according to the necessities of the users. Systematic training will inevitably help the user for the maximum utilization of e-resources of the library. The leading web technologies such as internet surfing, emails, search engines, wikis, photo sharing, etc. are used by a great number of users on a daily and weekly basis of frequency. On the other hand majority of the web technologies are never used by a great number of users.
Web 2.0 tools can play a significant role in creating and designing library website for sharing information to users. These tools through LIS Professionals can develop library website and gives information about catalogs, services, products, events, exhibitions, history of the library, working hours, guidelines about library membership, issues of books, reservation/renewals/reminders, about library staff, contact information and courses offered by institutions, programs to be held etc. A structured questionnaire was considered for examining purposes, benefit and problems in using Web 2.0 tools. Out of circulated fifty seven questionnaires, 75.43% of respondents taking part in this study. On the basis of research outcome some recommendation have been put forwarding for espouse Web 2.0 tools and decision to implement such tools in university libraries of Assam in future.
