Digital maturity model for research and development organization with the aspect of sustainability

Elsevier, 2023

Many organizations are trying to assess how they progress on their digital transformation journey. One of the methods to assess this progress is to apply the concept of digital maturity. In this article authors describe how they discovered the need to develop a digital maturity model tailored to research and development organizations and share their experience from testing the first version of this model. Digital maturity can be assessed to determine the current state of the organization and to develop roadmaps helping organizations evolve and respond to market dynamics. The authors firmly believe that there is no responsible digitalization without considering the dimension of sustainability and therefore they included it in their maturity model. A digitally transformed company becomes more efficient, generates less waste, and uses fewer resources, which makes it more sustainable.

The Degree of Contribution of Digital Transformation Technology on Company Sustainability Areas

Sustainability

The impact of new digital technologies creates challenges for the digital transformation process in company sustainability areas. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of contribution of digital-transformation-enabling technologies to company sustainability areas of three pulp and paper manufacturing companies in Brazil and relate it to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA method, we sought to assess the key concepts of sustainability and the implementation of digital transformation (DT) through its enabling digital technologies. A field study was conducted in three Brazilian pulp and paper companies to assess the degree of contribution. They are leading companies in the paper and cellulose industry in Brazil. The results obtained indicate that the companies in this sample are still in a growth process regarding the use of digital technologies in their sustainability areas. Only one digital technology...

What will (and should) sustainable digital maturity look like in business ecosystems? A Delphi study on the best practices, barriers and regulation of digital transformation

International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, 2020

Digital transformation is a necessary condition for organisational survival and business success. A Delphi study is conducted with an international panel of experts from the academy, management consulting firms and industry leaders on how digital transformation might unfold and be regulated tomorrow, exploring ethical aspects of what sustainable digital maturity will (and should) look like.

The Leading Digital Technology Companies and Their Approach to Sustainable Development

Sustainability

The increasingly stellar attraction of the digital technologies and the growing, though not universal, consensus of the need to build a sustainable future, are two powerful trends within society. The aim of this article is to offer an exploratory review of how the leading companies within the digital transformation market have addressed sustainable development. As such, the article’s originality and value lie in offering a review of current corporate thinking within that market. The study adopts an inductive, qualitative approach based on an examination of published company reports, and identifies six major sustainability themes being actively promoted and supported. The article concludes that the current sustainability objectives of the technology companies are driven as much by commercial reality as any altruistic motives, and that support and promotion of the circular economy may offer the best opportunity for digital technologies to meaningfully impact sustainable development.

Digital Sustainability in the Organization: Scale Development and Validation

Sustainability, 2021

This study aims to develop a measurement scale for the digital sustainability practices in the organization. Considering that digital sustainability practices vary across industries and context, this study develops a scale of digital sustainability metrics, which is based on a comprehensive literature review. The proposed model was then tested with partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Several phases of qualitative and quantitative investigations of employees were conducted to propose and validate the construct of digital sustainability. The scale development process consists of initial item generation, item refinement, validity assessment and model testing. Four dimensions, namely, content, technology, preservation and promotion, were identified. A 16-item scale was proposed and validated. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed. Practitioners should focus on investing behind organisational resources and technologies that enhance the operation...

Strategic Factors Enabling Digital Maturity: an Extended Survey

2019

Over the last decade, new opportunities enabled by digital technologies have become the center of attention of companies. In fact, not only digital technologies transform businesses, they also influence the way people interact and work.
