Analysis of Rural HOUSEHOLDS’ Food Security Status in Ogun State, Nigeria

Although food is one of the basic necessities of life, food insecurity remains a major problem in Nigeria. This paper analyzes the factors influencing food security among rural households in Ogun State, Nigeria. Data were collected with multi-stage sampling procedure and analyzed with descriptive statistics and Probit regression model. The results show that mean age and household size of the respondents were 43years (std dev = 13.31) and 5 (std dev = 3.28) respectively. The mean per capita household expenditure per day was N113.57. Using two-third mean per capita expenditure as food security line, 70.1 percent of the households were food secure, while 36.7 percent were food secure with dollar per day per person food security line. Factors that contributed to food security status of the households at two-third mean per capita household expenditure and a dollar per day were dependency ratio, marital status, age, and income. It was recommended that in order to increase food security, rural dwellers should be encouraged to diversify their income sources, among others.

Assessing the Food Security Determinants among Rural Households in Kano, Nigeria

Food security is a serious challenge in Nigeria as a whole and Kano in particular. Numerous factors combine to make households food insecure, especially the rural households in Kano State. The aim and objective of the study is to indicate the food status of the rural households and identify the major determinants of food security in the region. Using a sample size of 326 rural households from eight local government areas in Kano, this study assessed the food security of rural households through a food security index (FSI). A binary regression was applied to identify the factors that determine food security in rural Kano. The FSI result revealed that 60% of the rural households are food insecure. Analysis of Factors Affecting Food Security in Rural and Urban Farming Households of Benue State, Nigeria

The study examined factors affecting household food security status among rural and urban farming households of Benue State, Nigeria. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed to obtain a sample of 180 respondents, 90 households head each from rural and urban areas. Data were collected through structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Food Security Index, Surplus/Food Insecurity Gap, Factor analysis and Probit model. Using calorie intake method, the result revealed that 53.3% and 62.2% of rural and urban households respectively were food secured. The rural and urban food secure households exceeded the recommended calorie intake by 39% and 42% respectively, while the rural and urban food insecure households fell short of recommended calorie by 24% and 26% respectively. EFFECTS OF SOCIOECONOMIC VARIABLES ON FOOD SECURITY STATUS AMONG RURAL FARMING HOUSEHOLDS IN YAGBA EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KOGI STATE, NIGERIA

The study determines the effects of socioeconomic variables on food security status among rural farming households in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used in selecting two hundred and twenty-five (225) rural farming households. Structured questionnaire complimented with interview schedule was used for data collection. Information was collected on the food security status of the households and effect of socioeconomic variables on food security status among rural farming households. Data was analysed using frequency, percentage, food security index and logit regression. The result showed that the mean per capital expenditure of the households was N126264.444 while the food security line was N84176.3. About 69.9% of the households were food secure while 69.9% were food insecure. The coefficient of age (-0.0818006), household size (-0.0883087), educational level (0.36731) and annual income (0.4168275) had effect on the food security of rural households in the study area. It is recommended that older farmers be supported with incentives in order to reduce over-dependents on young farmers. Farmers should diversify into other viable enterprises in order to address the problem of food insecurity.

Analysis of Food Security Status Among Rural Farming Households in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria

The study analyzes Food security status among rural farming households in Mubi North local Government Area of Adamawa state, Nigeria. Respondents’ socio- economic characteristics, food security status determinants of household food security and production constraints faced by respondents in achieving food security in the study area were investigated. Data were collected from one hundred and twelve (112) randomly selected rural farmers in six villages of the six (6) selected wards of Mubi North local government area using structured questionnaire. Determinants of Food Security Among The Rural Farming Households in Kwara State, Nigeria

This study was carried out to identify the determinants of food security among rural households in Kwara State. Data used for this study was collected from a total of one hundred and sixty five rural farming households using a three-stage random sampling technique. The main tools of analysis for this study include descriptive statistics and logistic regression model. The study shows that about one third of the rural farming households sampled were food insecure and that farm size of the households, gross farm income, total non farm income and household size are the significant determinants of rural household food security in the study area. The study recommends the need to assist farming households in the study area diversify their sources of income in order to be able to meet their minimum food requirement especially during the off-season.

Socioeconomic Analysis of Food Security Status Among Rural Farming Households in Kaduna State, Nigeria

The study analyzed food security situation among rural farming households in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling technique was used for selecting samples for the study. In the first stage, four Local Government Areas were purposively selected based on their large concentration of farming households, from which two rural communities were each selected. The last stage involved simple random selection of 20% of the farming households from each rural community selected in stage two, to give a total of 120 households as the sample size for the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, household food security index and binary logistic regression model. Results of socio-economic characteristics of farming households showed that the mean age of household heads in the study area was 39 years, majority (87.5%) of the households was headed by males and 83.3% of the households’ heads were married. Major occupations of the household heads were farming and trading representing 40% of all the household heads and over 59% of them had secondary school education. The results further show that average household size in the study area was 11 persons. Also, 40% of the household heads had farming experience of between 14 and 22 years and mean annual households income was ₦557,783.00. Majority (55.8%) of the household heads claimed not to have access to extension services. Results of food security status of farming households revealed that 67% of the households were food secure and 33% were food insecure. The Mean Per Capita Food Expenditure (MPCFE) and food security line were ₦3,549.61 and ₦2,366.41 respectively. Results of logistic regression analysis reveal that coefficients of farming experience and access to credit were positive on households’ food security status and significant at 5% level of probability; while those of household size and monthly income were also positive and significant at 1% level of probability. The results further shows that the most common food insecurity coping strategy used by farming households was borrowing money to buy food items, which was used by 60% of the households and ranked 1st.The study concluded that majority of the farming households were food secure. It recommends that low interest credit should be made available and easily accessible by commercial banks and other lending institutions to farmers since most of households rely on borrowing money to purchase food items in situations of food insecurity.

Comparative analysis of households' socioeconomic and demographic characteristics and food security status in urban and rural areas of Kwara and Kogi States of north-central Nigeria

Food security is a critical issue in Nigeria today as the country struggles with high rates of food prices and poverty. This study analysed the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of Household Heads (HHH) and classified them according to food security status. Household level data from the cross-sectional survey was employed in November 2006 to February 2007through a well-structured questionnaire to 396 HHH with a multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were analysed through a descriptive statistics and Rasch model. Average age of the HHH was 42.45years with Standard Deviation (SD) of 9.57 years in Rural Areas (RA) against 43.29 years and SD of 9.83 years in Urban Areas (UA). The HHH level of education was much higher in UA compared to RA. Assessment of Food Security Situation among Farming Households in Rural Areas of Kano State, Nigeria

Achieving food security is still a major problem for households in most rural areas of Nigeria. This study was therefore designed to assess the food security status among farming households in rural areas of Kano state, Nigeria. The study utilized a multistage random sampling technique to select a sample of 120 rural farm households for interview. Data collected were analysed using percentages, mean score, logistic regression and food security index. Using the food security index approach, the study revealed that 74% of the respondents were food secure while 26% were food insecure. The results of the logistic regression revealed that educational level (p≤0.05; z = 1.95), sex (p≤0.05; z = 1.99), household size (p≤0.05;-4.29) and access to credit (p≤0.05; z = 2.4) were significant determinants of food security. Also, the major effect of food insecurity on the households include reduction in household income/ savings due to increased expenditure on food (M= 3.58), among others. The perceived coping strategies in cushioning the effects of food insecurity include engaging in off-farm and non-farm jobs to increase household income, (M= 2.77), among others. The study therefore recommends the fast tracking of already established policy measures aimed at reducing food insecurity in the country. Also, efforts aimed at reducing food insecurity among rural farming households should focus on increasing household income and food supply.

Household level food security status and its determinants among rural farmers in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Despite the increase in food availability world-wide, majority of the rural population are still food insecure. Empirical evidence abound that food insecurity has a life-long detrimental impacts on productivity and income generating potential of populations. This study aims to analyze the food security status of rural farm households in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling procedure was employed to select 343 food crop farmers in the area. Primary data were obtained through survey and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, food security index and binary logistic regression model. The results showed that about 78% of the respondents were married, with mean household size of 6 persons. Most (58%) of the respondents were male, with mean educational level of 11 years.
