Between Literary Blackface and Critical Whiteness. European Meta-Images in Hans Paasche’s "Lukanga Mukara" (1912/13) and Hermann Hesse’s "The European" (1918) (original) (raw)

CompLit. Journal of European Literature, Arts and Society, 2022

Abstract

In "Die Forschungsreise des Afrikaners Lukanga Mukara ins innerste Deutschland" (1912/13) and "Der Europäer: eine Fabel" (1918), Hans Paasche and Hermann Hesse, respectively, criticise white Europe from a supposedly Black perspective. Drawing on critical whiteness studies and imagology, this article examines to what extent the meta images of Europe in both texts go beyond literary blackface and represent early white European approaches to critical whiteness.
