Natural polymers in pharmaceutical drug delivery: A review

World Journal of Biology Pharmacy and Health Sciences, 2020

In pharmaceutical formulation two main ingredients are required which is API and excipient. And excipient contains many components which plays vital role in manufacturing of dosage form as well as improve pharmaceutical parameters of the dosage form. Polymers used in any dosage form as excipient. Polymers have influencing capacity towards drug release and should be compatible, stable, non-toxic and economic etc. Generally, polymers are classified into three categories i.e natural, semi-synthetic and synthetic polymers. Nowadays, many pharmaceutical companies inclined towards using natural polymers due to many problems created with drug release and side effects. Polymers plays various application in formulation as excipient like to provide uniform drug delivery, rate controlling agent, taste masking agent, protective and stabilizing agents, etc. So that this review discuss about various natural polymers, there advantages over synthetic polymers and role of polymers in designing drug ...

Natural Polymers in Drug Delivery Development

Polymers have been successfully employed in the formulation of solid, liquid and semisolid dosage forms and are specifically useful in the design of modified release drug delivery systems. Both synthetic and natural polymers have been investigated extensively for this purpose, but the use of natural polymers for pharmaceutical applications is attractive because they are economical, readily available, non-toxic, and capable of chemical modifications, potentially biodegradable and with few exceptions, also biocompatible. One of the most remarkable and useful features of a polymers swelling ability manifests itself when that swelling can be triggered by a change in the environment surrounding the delivery system. This review mainly put emphasis on description of various natural polymers used in drug delivery development process.

A Comperhensive Review on Natural Polymer: Application in Pharmaceutical Formulations

www.ijcrt.org , 2020

In recent years considerable development in pharmaceutical products for presented and newly discovered drug and core origin products. Natural polymers are broadly used for traditional and novel pharmaceutical dosage forms. Gums are the effective additives used in the number of pharmaceutical formulation. Gums are potential excipients for NDDS. It became useful additives in various pharmaceutical dosage forms. Because they having great availability, biodegradability, non-toxicity and low costing material. Natural gums are largely used in optimization and development in pharmaceuticals as a binder, disintegrant, suspending agents, and gelling agent. The use of gum from core origin as excipients in NDDS is a most interesting and remarkable area in pharmaceutical research. In this review article, we discuss various natural gum used in pharmaceutical formulation and that role in pharmaceuticals.

Natural polymers in formulations

All pharmaceutical dosage forms contain many additives besides the active ingredients to assist manufacturing and to obtain the desired effect to the pharmaceutical active ingredients. The advances in drug delivery have simultaneously urged the discovery of novel excipients which are safe and fulfill specific functions and directly or indirectly influence the rate and extent of release and or absorption. Earlier used natural excipients are carrageenan, thaumatin, lard, shilajit, aerosil, myrobalan, and storax. Use of these natural excipients to deliver the bioactive agents has been hampered by the synthetic materials. Excipients are any component other than the active substances intentionally added to formulation of a dosage form. Novel drug delivery systems are developed to address the challenges of drug development such as bioavailability, permeability, and poor solubility. This review discusses about the majority of these plant-derived polymeric compounds, their sources extraction procedure, chemical constituents, uses and so delivery system recent investigations as excipients in novel drug.

Application of natural polymers as pharmaceutical excipients

Global Journal of Life Sciences and Biological Research, 2018

Excipients play an important role to convert the Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredient (API) in to dosage form by ensuring its safety and efficacy so that administration can be suitable for the patients [1]. The use of natural polymeric excipients in pharmaceutical sectors is increasing day by over semi synthetic or synthetic excipients [2]. Low toxicity, availability, cost effectiveness, soothing action, non-irritant nature are the main reasons which make them superior from others sources [3-6]. Natural polymeric excipients can be used in different formulations like solid, liquid and semi-solid dosage forms where they act as disintegrates, binders, film formers, matrix formers, release modifiers, thickeners, stabilizers, emulsifiers, suspending agents, sweetener and mucoadhesives agent [7].Solid monolithic matrix systems, implants, films, beads, micro particles, nanoparticles, inhalable and injectable systems, viscous liquid can be formulated and manufactured by the help of natural polymeric excipients [8-10].

The purpose of writing this review on natural polymer based drug delivery system (NPBDDS) was to compile the recent literature with special focus on the principal mechanism involved coating technology based on natural polymer to achieve therapeutic goal for prolongation of drug release to the desire site of action. It is well known that the growth of human society was influenced by the expansion of man-made polymers. The recent developments of novel drug delivery technology using synthetic polymers including the physicochemical properties and formulation variables affecting drug release from its dosage form and for that it is essential approaches to design NPBDDS. The natural polymers are presented from their molecular structure point of view along with main fields of applications through advance in drug delivery system (ADDS). This review also summarizes the in vitro techniques, in vivo studies to evaluate the performance and application of NPBNDDS and applications of these systems...

1 Natural Polymers for Drug Delivery : An Introduction

2016

Natural polymers are macromolecules composed of repeating structural units joined by covalent bonds. Carbohydrates, proteins and muscle bres are known examples and have potential as drug delivery systems. A typical delivery system aims at slow and tissue-specic release, and as natural polymers exhibit biodegradability and biocompatibility they are well suited for this purpose. Natural polymers are also utilized as excipients and over the years, new advances in the treatment of diseases using the approach of site specic drug delivery by the utilization of polymers have emerged with several promises. This chapter highlights some available examples with an emphasis on their potent applications and properties in the drug domain. 1 Natural Polymers for Drug Delivery: An Introduction
