Railway Dynamics Analysis Using Lego Mindstorms
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
In recent years, the high speed railway vehicle dynamics performances have been studied and investigated in order to determine the ride comfort of the passengers. Most of the time, these researches were involving expensive and high end technology of data logging system to record and analyze the data. In this research, a low cost data logging system (Lego Mindstorms) is used to gather the data from accelerometer and gyro during experimentation. The study about the behaviour of railway vehicle in term of roll and vibrations at three perpendicular axes during running at the curve track is performed. Actual field run of railway vehicle data collection is performed on the available high speed railway vehicle operating from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Sentral. The route selected consists of several curves which are important to study the dynamics performance of the vehicle. The results from experiment establishes the dynamics performances of the rail...

Modelling tracks for roller coaster dynamics
International Journal of Vehicle Design, 2007
A methodology for the accurate description of three dimensional track geometries is proposed. Cubic, Akima and shape preserving splines are proposed for track parameterisation. The track description uses Frenet frames that provide the track referential at every point. During dynamic analysis a pre-calculated database is linearly interpolated to form the kinematic constraints that enforce the wheelsets of the vehicle to move along the track with a prescribed angular orientation. This approach allows calculating the reaction forces that develop between the vehicle and the track. The formulation is discussed emphasizing the influence of the parameterisation methods to construct the track geometry.
Proceeding ISSE Harmonization of STS in Science Learning to Prepare 21st Century Generation, 2015
This research is aimed at analyzing the velocity of motion of an object with the aid of technology. By using the application videopad to develop an understanding of mechanical concepts, learners are given the opportunity to build on their own knowledge through real world experience. To this end, a physics learning medium, i.e., a mechanical toy car, was developed following the principle of utilizing elements from the environment as a primary learning resource. As a subject matter physics is characterized by both difficult as well as easy concepts, such that not all concepts can be understood by learners only by reading, listening or showing. This learning medium was used to measure the velocity of a moving object by manipulating the trajectory of the toy car. This toy car, which was made out of a recycled drinking bottle, uses a DVD motor as an engine with a battery as power source. The method used was to allow the car to move along the prepared track, accompanied by progressive changes in the mass of its load. The motion of the car was video-recorded in mp4 format, then analyzed using videopad to determine the time and the distance taken. This learning medium was also designed to be able to explain some physical concepts related to mechanics, including one-dimensional motion, circular motion, motion dynamics, energy and work, as well as momentum and impulse.

This research describes the results of the development of 2D air track tools designed for one and two-dimensional motion experiments with small frictional forces. Friction is minimized by using wind gusts through small holes made in all parts of the runway. Motion detection devices used are digital cameras and trackers. Digital cameras are used to record the motion of objects on a platform in the form of video with a specific frame-rate. Tracker is used to analyzing videos that contain information about object motion. This tool has been tested on one-dimensional motion, that is, an object that slides over an inclined plane and two-dimensional motion in the case of a collision of two objects. In the case of one-dimensional position graphs against time can be displayed, the instantaneous velocity and average and acceleration can be accurately determined. In the case of the collision of two objects, the position graph against time can also be displayed for each object before and after ...
Simple Approach for Laboratory Modeling of Magnetically Levitated Trains
Thirteenth International Conference of Fluid Dynamics, 21-22 December, 2018, Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir, Cairo, EGYPT, 2018
Magnetically levitated (Maglev) ground transportation means represent a challenging mode of transportation. In this technology, vehicles glide above their guideways without contact. They are suspended, guided, and propelled by magnetic forces. However, this emerging technology is typically complicated. Thus, there is a real need for a simple approach to be taught to both post-and undergraduate engineering students. This paper introduces a simple approach to model the Maglev train in a laboratory scale. The work was carried out by a team of undergraduate students for their graduation project in Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia; under the author's supervision. The main objective was to demonstrate the theory and operation of the Maglev train with simple and handy laboratory tools. The students tried different techniques till they succeeded in levitating the train in an acceptable fashion. Thus, the project gives an effective tool for educational demonstration.
Design and Fabrication of Amusement Park Train Powered with Electricity
European Journal of Materials Science and Engineering, 2021
Experience builds and proves the worth of the individual in the field of engineering as a profession. The work centered on the design, fabrication, and testing of electrically operated amusement park train with a remote control unit and electromechanical system. Materials used in the fabrication were sourced locally. The machine design incorporates base frame and bearing/shaft housing as a unit, variable electric motor, 5hp(12rpm), coach, lever arm and remote control switch. The design takes care of the speed of the coach with respect to the speed of variable electric motor. The coach is of rectangular form made with an angular bar which is supported by four tyres at the chassis tilted at an angle. Performance evaluation was carried out on the amusement park train and the results showed that the amusement park train has an efficiency of 67.67%. The amusement park train is a viable design, very strong, and efficient. The machine is cheap to install, operate, and maintain. The maintenance does not require special training and spare parts are cheap to obtain. The amusement park train is simple and can be easily operated by the passenger on the coach.
Some aspects of the experimental assessment of dynamic behavior of the railway track
Journal of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, 2017
The paper suggests application of an experimental method for the assessment of the dynamic effect of a locomotive underframe on the railway track. The assessment is to be based on spectral analysis of the response of structural elements of the railway track undergoing a shock pulse. Application of digital measuring systems for monitoring of motion of the train is also proposed.
Kinematics investigations of cylinders rolling down a ramp using tracker
2016
Nowadays, students' exploration as well as students' interaction in the application stage of learning cycle can be improved by directly model real-world objects based on Newton's Law using Open Source Physics (OSP) computermodeling tools. In a case of studying an object rolling down a ramp, a traditional experiment method commonly uses a ticker tape sliding through a ticker timer. However, some kinematics parameters such as the instantaneous acceleration and the instantaneous speed of object cannot be investigated directly. By using the Tracker video analysis method, all kinematics parameters of cylinders rolling down a ramp can be investigated by direct visual inspection. The result shows that (1) there are no relations of cylinders' mass as well as cylinders' radius towards their kinetics parameters. (2) Excluding acceleration data, the speed and position as function of time follow the theory. (3) The acceleration data are in the random order, but their trend-lines closely fit the theory with 0.15% error. (4) The decrease of acceleration implicitly occurs due to the air friction acting on the cylinder during rolling down. (5) The cylinder's inertial moment constant has been obtained experimentally with 3.00% error. (6) The ramp angle linearly influences the cylinders' acceleration with 2.36% error. This research implied that the program can be further applied to physics educational purposes.
System Analysis and Working of Magnetic Levitation Trains
International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering Technology (IJRASET), 2022
This paper involves the layout, hardware, era, software and destiny makes use of "Magnetic levitation trains." The maglev transportation machine is extra strong, quicker, financial, green. Maglev structures are presently in use for applications which includes bearings, excessive-speed trains, and manufacturing. Maglev is a way of propulsion that uses magnetic levitation to propel automobiles with magnets instead of with wheels, axles and bearings. With maglev, a vehicle is levitated a brief distance faraway from a manual manner the use of magnets to create both raise and thrust (levitation could not exceed above 10 centimetre's). In destiny those excessive-pace maglev trains would supply a massive competition to the aviation enterprise. I.
