A key challenge for supermarkets in East Nairobi is achieving the high ICT-economic growth rate target set in Vision 2030 of at least 10% and above as a key contributor to Kenya’s economic growth. Project management has become a key success ingredient in today’s software development and implementation. Survival of retail business is a key factor in commercial transactions that depend on e-commerce to attract and retain customers. This study aimed to investigate Project Management steps and their influence on e-commerce in supermarkets in East Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya. The study was guided by three specific objectives; to examine the influence of definition and Planning; Performance and Control, and to analyze the influence of Project close on e-commerce in Supermarkets in East Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya. The study design was explanatory sequential mixed methodology. Study population here was IT tech-savvy personnel involved in e-commerce and operating in the seven (7) supermarkets at East Nairobi. Due to the small number of possible respondents, the study embraced census in sampling all the 99-target population group. Purposeful random sampling and snow balling techniques were adopted for identification of the sample respondents. Both questionnaires and in-depth interview schedules were employed for data collection instruments. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically while quantitative data involved descriptive analysis through SPSS version 22. Frequencies, mean and percentages constituted descriptive statistics; while multiple linear regressions and Pearson’s correlation encompassed inferential statistics. Findings established that definition and planning; performance and control and closure, all influenced e-commerce. In conclusion, the project management steps were found to significantly influence e-commerce. The study recommends creation and strengthening of definition and planning committee to advocate, administer and uphold unsurpassed practices for e-commerce development and implementation. A pooled databank center is further recommended to reserve and retain data related to project management steps that are relevant to e-commerce. a full-fledged ICT-e-commerce policy for adoption by both retail supermarkets, businesses and marketing ventures. For future researchers, studies are suggested on the role of ICT in behavioral changes and management of e-commerce related stress; the influence of e-commerce on the establishment of cyber security measures for families and further, ICT intervention measures and project completion.
