Towards new π-conjugated systems for photovoltaic applications
2016
Among renewable energies, the sunlight has by far the highest theoretical potential to meet the worldwide need in energy. Photovoltaic devices are thus currently the subject of intense research for low-cost conversion of sunlight into electrical power. In particular, organic photovoltaics have emerged as an interesting alternative to produce electricity due to their low manufacturing cost compared to silicon solar cells, their mechanical flexibility and the versatility of the possible chemical structures. In this dissertation, we focused our research on the development of new organic pi-conjugated materials for organic solar cells applications. Two types of solar cells have been studied during this work: bulk heterojunction and dye-sensitized solar cells. The charge transfer leading to the photocurrent is usually based on (i) a polymer donor and a fullerene acceptor in BHJ solar cells, such as the widely studied poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ...
Concept of Organic Photovoltaics: Operational Principles and Materials
Acta Electrotechnica et Informatica, 2013
Organic molecules possessing a π-conjugated (hetero)aromatic backbone are capable of transporting charge and interact efficiently with light. Therefore, these systems can act as semiconductors in opto-electronic devices similar to inorganic materials. However, organic chemistry offers tools for tailoring materials' functional properties via modifications of the molecular units, opening new possibilities for inexpensive device manufacturing. In this presentation, we discuss exploitation of such organic molecular systems in photovoltaics; the operation, advantages, and limitations of molecular donor-acceptor heterojunction structures.
Π-Conjugated Polymers for Organic Electronics and Photovoltaic
The optoelectronic properties of polymeric semiconductor materials can be utilized for the fabrication of organic electronic and photonic devices. When key structural requirements are met, these materials exhibit unique properties such as solution processability, large charge transporting capabilities, and/or broad optical absorption. In this review recent developments in the area of π-conjugated polymeric semiconductors for organic thin-film (or field-effect) transistors (OTFTs or OFETs) and bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic (or solar) cell (BHJ-OPV or OSC) applications are summarized and analyzed. †

Organic materials based on conjugated molecule for organic solar cells applications
2017
The research in the organic p-conjugated molecules has become one of the most interesting topics in chemistry physics and materials science. To improve the quality of device of the solar cells, it's important to highlight the low band gap for these materials. The electronic properties, geometries and absorption of these studied compounds are determined by using the DFT method (density functional theory) and TD/DFT (time-dependent density functional theory). The theoretical knowledge of the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the components is major in studying organic solar cells. In this work, new materials p-conjugated containing heterocyclic structures will be studied using a quantum analysis DFT. The objective is to determine the structural and optoelectronic parameters (HOMO, LUMO, Egap, Voc…) starting from the optimized structures of studied materials. So these parameters have been calculated and reported. The effects of the structure length and the substituents on the geometri...
Impact of Backbone Fluorination on π-Conjugated Polymers in Organic Photovoltaic Devices: A Review
Polymers, 2016
Solution-processed bulk heterojunction solar cells have experienced a remarkable acceleration in performances in the last two decades, reaching power conversion efficiencies above 10%. This impressive progress is the outcome of a simultaneous development of more advanced device architectures and of optimized semiconducting polymers. Several chemical approaches have been developed to fine-tune the optoelectronics and structural polymer parameters required to reach high efficiencies. Fluorination of the conjugated polymer backbone has appeared recently to be an especially promising approach for the development of efficient semiconducting polymers. As a matter of fact, most currently best-performing semiconducting polymers are using fluorine atoms in their conjugated backbone. In this review, we attempt to give an up-to-date overview of the latest results achieved on fluorinated polymers for solar cells and to highlight general polymer properties' evolution trends related to the fluorination of their conjugated backbone.
