Within the framework of a survey of alder carrs in northwestern Lower Saxony, 101 relevés were made. The area of the relevés was 400 m2, with no more than 3 relevés in any continuous forest area. The data set was classified using 3 different methods. First, 28 dominance types were distinguished based on the domin ant growth form or dominant species in the herb layer. Second, 21 operational vegetation types based on overall floristic composition were distinguished. These types were than reduced to 6 basic types using both floristic and ecological information. Third, a standard phytosociological classification was carried out using differential species of known phytosociological value. This led to the subdivison of 2 associations, one of which was furthermore divided into 3 subassociations and in one case 3 variants.
