El objetivo general de esta investigación es descubrir las características de las estructuras lingüísticas de Indonesia en los estilos de pensamiento. Este estudio utiliza un enfoque descriptivo. Se encontró que el estilo aleatorio de pensamiento abstracto (AA) era el más dominante en este estudio, seguido del estilo de pensamiento secuencial (SK) como el segundo dominante. Procesan la información de manera ordenada y lineal. Para la mentalidad del estudiante, la realidad es lo que se puede entender a través de los sentidos físicos, es decir, la visión.

Ideas Development Patterns of English Expository Discourses by Indonesians as Reflected in the Jakarta Post

This study investigates the ideas organizational patterns that underlie the writing of English Expository discourses performed by Indonesians. Organizational pattern constitutes one of the features that contribute to text coherence. The data of the study consist of 6 expository discourses taken from The Jakarta Post. The study is descriptive and qualitative in nature. It describes the observed phenomena in the form of words rather than numbers. The characteristics of the organizational patterns underlying the English expository discourses written by Indonesians are identified and analyzed. The results of the study show that fifty percent of the English Expository Discourses written by Indonesians reflects the linear organizational pattern. Some suggestions that can be put forward are as follows: the linear organizational pattern should become the teaching material of composition subject. The students should be reminded that when writing in English, they should follow English rule including in developing ideas. Comparisons between linear and non linear organizational patterns should be presented to the students to make them aware of the differences.

Rhetorical Development in Indonesian Efl Students’ Argumentative Essays

Writing patterns are different among cultures if the language styles are also different, especially between English and Indonesian. However, some studies found that Indonesian students are capable of writing by using English pattern when they are taught in a writing course. Long after they have not been taught the English pattern, their writing patterns changes. This study reports that change. It is a qualitative content analysis study on 40 argumentative essays, written by 20 students of State University of Surabaya, which were analyzed. The results of this study show that the rhetorical developments of students' essays become less linear after two years. This means that their study in an English writing course has successfully teach them to write following the English logic. Yet, these students cannot maintain their linear pattern over time.

COGNITIVE PROCESS IN ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING: A CASE STUDY OF THREE INDONESIAN COLUMNISTS

This research is aimed at reconstructing cognitive processes experienced by Indonesian advanced writers in five stages of writing: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Three Indonesian advanced writers were involved to be sources to reveal the " noumena " or " under-meaning structures " that make their works come into existence. This research reveals that various ways experienced by every single writer in exploring inspiration, starting to write, developing ideas and arguments, revising draft and determining them as final drafts. Learning from advanced writers is fruitful efforts to evolve our writing competence. Experiences, cognitions, interests, values, stylistics, metaphors, and mechanics are influential aspects in enriching their works.

Argument Strategies and Linguistic Realizations of the Discussion Sections in Local, National, and International Journal Articles in English Education by Indonesian Authors: How do they differ and/or Resemble?

The quality of argument in the discussion section determines the quality of a journal article because in this section authors must argue convincingly so that readers may accept and use their new knowledge claim. This study aims to determine the differences in argument strategies and linguistic realizations in the discussion sections of unaccredited local, accredited national, and reputable international journals in English by Indonesian writers in the field of Language Teaching. The research method used was descriptive qualitative and quantitative research methods (mixed-method) in analyzing differences in argument styles and linguistic features of the discussion sections of the journal articles. The Pedagogical Implications of Coherence in English Argumentative Discourse by Indonesian Professionals

In this global era, all educated people, such as professionals and college students, need to have English writing skills. Writing competence will facilitate professionals’ success in their careers and students’ success in their studies. However, coherent writing is a complex task that requires complex skills and is therefore not easy. For manyIndonesian scientists, English scientific writing for international seminars or journals is likely still the hardest work (Suharno 2012). Based on the background above, this study investigated the coherence of English articles, such as argumentative discourses by Indonesian professionals. The study is descriptive and qualitative in nature. It applies both topical and paradigmatic analyses. The data of the study include 14 English articles found in the “Opinion Forum” of The Jakarta Post. The research results reveal that, for the most part, English argumentative discourses by Indonesian writers are developed only partly coherently.

Characterizing the Language Features and Rhetorical Moves of Argumentative Essays Written by Filipino ESL Senior High School Writers

This study presents the Filipino ESL senior high school students’ strengths and weaknesses in writing an argumentative essay. In the context of an institution in the Philippines where English is used as a second language by learners with varied L1, and the learners are required to write in academic English, the aim of this study is to identify the language features and the rhetorical moves of the argumentative essays using Hyland’s model (1990). Analyzing the students’ essays as a requirement in the academe across disciplines could provide appropriate scaffolding in guiding the Filipino ESL writers. The original essays written within an hour by 51 (from 108) Filipino ESL senior high school writers were encoded and processed using the Antconc software to identify the language features that characterize the essays. The essays were coded by the researcher and an inter-coder verified the analysis in relation to the stages/parts and the rhetorical moves found in the essays. The top three most commonly used verbs in the argumentative essays of the Filipino ESL writers of English are non-action verbs – is, are, have. In writing argumentative essays, the Filipino ESL senior high school writers of English lack lexical verbs in the lexical level, and the thesis and conclusion parts in the discourse level. They were familiar with the argument part, but lack citation as support to their claims.

A Study of the Development of English Paragraphs in Writing Argumentative Essays at SMKN 1 Batang Hari

This research was conducted based on problems related to the poor ability of students in writing argumentative essays in English at SMKN 1 Batang Hari. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of students to write paragraphs of argumentative essay development. This research is descriptive research. This research instrument uses writing assignments. The study population was class XII students of SMKN 1 Batang Hari. By using cluster random sampling, researchers took one class as a sample of this study. From the research findings, it was found that students' abilities in writing argumentative essays were low. The most common mistake made by students is in using evidence and writing the exact sentence. It can be concluded that students still have difficulty writing good sentences based on grammar rules. They also don't know how to write good conclusion paragraphs from argumentative essays.
