COMPREHENSIBILITY OF ROAD TRAFFIC SIGNS AMONG URBAN DRIVERS (CASE STUDY; SUNYANI MUNICIPALITY, GHANA
Road traffic signs are the oldest and most commonly used devices for traffic control. The ultimate goal of road traffic signs is to control and regulate both human and vehicular traffic in a conducive user friendly env ironment; thereby maximizing road safety. This study investigated drivers' comprehensibility of road signs and safety in the Sunyani Municipality , Ghana with respect to their personal characteristics such as age, educational background, mode of training an d training in road safety. A total of ten (10) symbolic regulatory/prohibitory signs, ten (10) warning signs and eight (8) informatory signs were investigated. Two hundred (200) questionnaires were prepared and distributed to drivers who constituted 40 private drivers, 60 minibus drivers, 20 bus drivers (VIP, Metro Mass Etc.) and 80 taxi drivers. The study generally showed that, drivers in the municipality have a satisfactory understanding of traffic signs since an average correct score of 82.53% was recorded. The study further establishes that the educational background, age and number of years driven do have significant influences on driver comprehensibility of road traffic signs.
Assessment of compliance level of road users to road traffic signs in Kaduna Metropolis, Nigeria

Traffic signs as a traffic control device for traffic safety aims to regulate and control traffic by providing information about the road and its environment for road users. This study investigated an assessment of compliance level of road users to road traffic signs in Kaduna metropolis, Nigeria. A total of ten (10) symbolic warning, (10) regulatory-prohibitory signs and ten (10) informative signs were investigated. Understanding of Traffic Signs by Drivers on Urban Roads – A Case Study of Ilorin, Kwara State

The effectiveness of traffic signs, which are used often to promote safe driving and are designed to convey critical information quickly, is contingent on drivers' ability to understand them. Therefore, researchers in Ilorin set out to determine how well-understood and compliant traffic control devices were among drivers representing a range of demographics. The study was conducted using a descriptive survey research approach. The population for this study covers commercial and private drivers in Ilorin. The three local government areas in Ilorin were selected Ilorin South, East and West. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select three hundred and eighty-four (384) drivers from the population for the study. The research instrument used for the study is a wellstructured questionnaire. Statistics including frequency counts and percentages were used to examine the demographic information, the total proportion of drivers who properly recognized the traffic control device, and the variables that contribute to drivers' inability to comprehend traffic control devices. The average comprehension percentage of warning signs, regulatory signs, information sign, driver's knowledge of road marking 56.1%, 60.3%, 64.6% and 59% respectively. Aims: This study examines the understanding of traffic signs and symbols as a safety measure towards accident reduction among drivers in Southern Nigeria. It investigated the understanding of traffic signs and symbols by drivers in Nigeria with regards to their personal characteristics such as age, educational background, and driving experience and also determined the major factors influencing the high rate of road traffic accidents in Nigeria. Study Design: Investigation into the level of knowledge of drivers in understanding traffic signs and symbols in Southern Nigeria. Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted in Southern Nigeria, from September, 2017 to December, 2017. Methodology: 600 questionnaires were administered within the various city parks in Anambra, Enugu, Delta, and Lagos states but 476 of the respondents participated. A total of 27 symbols, which includes ten regulatory signs, nine warning signs, three traffic signals lights, and five road pavement markings were investigated. Miscellaneous questions for driving under special conditions, mechanical factors, and general guides were also assessed among the drivers. The use of Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS), as a tool was employed to analyze the data obtained from the respondents. Results: The analysis showed that there is a low understanding of traffic signs and symbols by drivers in Southern Nigeria. The overall average percentage of drivers who correctly understood the regulatory signs was 59%, warning signs was 64.2%, and pavement markings was 31.8%. Comprehension of Road Traffic Signs by Various Road Users in Kano City

Human perception of the information on the road signs is a critical factor in determining the safe use of both the vehicle and the interacting environment. A total of 30 road traffic signs which includes10-warning, 10-regulatory and 10-informatory signs were evaluated using 190 questionnaires to determine comprehension level of road users in Kano. The questionnaire was administered to both private and commercial drivers of trucks, cars, tricycle, motorcycle, and bicycle. Majority of the respondents are male (91.6%) which is due to the disproportionate ratio between male and female drivers in Kano city and 90% of them are youth below the age of 40 years showing that majority of the state drivers are young people. The comprehension level was found to be good 79%. The least comprehended signs in Kano are "park and ride" with comprehension level of 54.7%, followed by "Narrow bridge" (60%), "line merge ahead" (62.1%), "slippery road" (63.2%), "No entry for all vehicles" (70.5%). The signs with up to 90% recognition were "fuel station", "stop sign" and "school crossing". Sex, education, driving experience and type of vehicle used seems to affect the comprehension level of drivers in Kano. Truck drivers have a poor understanding of the traffic signs lower than all other classes of road users (65%).

This work, therefore, examines the communicative effectiveness of cautionary notices on Nigeria highways, where these cautionary notices are mostly found, by looking at the attitude of the motorists towards the cautionary notices and the attention people generally paid to them. Road traffic signs and road markings are silent speakers to the road users. This study was designed to find out the awareness and implications of road traffic signs among pedestrians in Warri metropolis of Delta State. The study employed the descriptive survey research design method. A sample size of 300 pedestrians randomly selected from five areas in Warri metropolis were employed to participate in the study. Simple random sampling technique was used. Structured questionnaire which included the different road traffic signs was used to collect data. Data collected were analyzed using percentage method, mean and t-test analysis. Background: Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest road injury death rate of all regions in the world with Nigeria being one of the four countries accounting for half of all these deaths.
