In recent years, many studies have been conducted on teaching Turkish as a foreign language. While some of these researches involve teaching language skills, some involve developing materials. As well as the materials developed in this field, the beliefs of the language teachers who will apply these materials will affect the use of these developed materials and their benefits to students. One of the materials that can be used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language is newspapers, also considered as authentic materials. In the researches, it has been stated that the classrooms where newspapers are used have positive effects on students' interest and participation in the lesson. As the starting point of this research, it was tried to determine which opinions and attitudes the teachers who teach Turkish to foreigners have towards using newspaper in their lessons. The research was conducted with a descriptive method-based screening model. For this purpose, teachers who teach Turkish abroad were contacted via internet and a questionnaire was conducted with them. In the analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire, the frequency and percentages of the items were calculated. As a result, it was determined that there was no significant difference of opinion between teachers' views on gender, age, graduated school and experience, and teachers were in agreement that students would participate more actively in the course in the development of vocabulary, development of reading comprehension skills when newspapers are used in lessons. It is thought that this research will be a source for material development studies for the use of newspapers in lessons.

This study is an attempt to analyse the newspaper supplements published by the Turkish printed press. An analysis of the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the contents of the newspaper supplements selected due to the circulation numbers follows a brief history of the newspaper supplements. The study ends with the interviews made with the editor-in-chiefs of the weekend supplements. What results from these two analyses on different levels is that even though the basic aim of the daily newspaper supplements, mainly the weekend supplements is to increase the advertising revenues of the publishing companies, the content presented to the readers through these supplements also plays an important role in the social-ideological reproduction as the symbol of a specific life style. Evaluation of Contribution of Local Newspapers to Lifelong Learning (Example of Bartın Province)

In this study, while the definition of informal education, which displays the main features of lifelong learning, is made, it is also attempted to identify the contributions of the local newspapers, through which the society can reach its own unique and necessary information, to the lifelong learning of their readers. In the research, within this scope, it was aimed to evaluate the contributions of local newspapers to lifelong learning according to the opinions of the local newspaper readers in Bartın Province in Turkey. Among the mixed research patterns, converging parallel pattern was used in the research. The screening model was used in the quantitative research phase, and the phenomenological pattern was used in the qualitative research phase. As a result of the research, according to the opinions of the readers, about the contributions of local newspapers to lifelong learning were found to be significantly different to gender, educational status, title and institution, local newspaper reading frequency and duration variables .In the study, it was concluded that the local newspapers were able to contribute to their readers' lifelong learning through the availability of limited opportunities and access to public institutions and employees, even at the point of insufficient education, health, environment, socio-cultural life, employment and labor news. To make more news in local newspapers on education, health, socio-cultural, environment and labor market and employment may contribute to lifelong learning.
Media, which has a special place in our social life, has a worthy function in education field like educating people and also entertaining during the education period. The need of regular and permanent presentation to most people of science which is developing constantly made firstly newspapers and then magazines go into our media lives. In this research which survey model is used; contribution of the Mektepli Newspaper is investigated considering that it was the first long lasting newspaper in the first years of declaration of Republic and its contributions to Turkish child journalism and magazine publishing and children literature.
Educational Discussions Reflected to the Press of the National Struggle

The articles published in the press during the period of national struggle are living documents that reflect the pain, joy, sorrow and hope aroused by the days of the national struggle. What is published and published in the press is the date of yesterday for tomorrow. The main purpose of this study was to scan Hâkimiyet-i Milliye, İrade-i Milliye, Açıksöz, İstikbal, Peyam-ı Sabah newspapers and some magazines that were published during the period of the national struggle to determine the problems of education and teachers. This study, which is a historical research, is a survey model. While fighting against the enemy during the national struggle period, education has not been neglected. Although we were at war as a nation as a whole, a congress of education was held, delegations of ilms were gathered, and ministers enacted laws on education and teachers. The numerical status of teachers in the period of national struggle, statistical values, training of teachers, legal and organizational problems were discussed by educators in the press. During the period of national struggle, teachers suffer the most from their economic problems. In this period, we see that the teachers who could not earn their salaries and could not earn a living resigned or worked in other jobs. In fact, this research is very important in terms of revealing the importance given to education even in the most critical days of the War of Independence and discussing these problems in the press.
Educational journalism in Ukraine (results of content analysis)

The article describes theoretical approaches to understanding educational journalism, characterizes the concepts of educational journalism in the Ukrainian and global media space, and builds a model of influence of external factors on the coverage of education issues in the mass media outlets. The tasks of the research are: 1) to study theoretical developments and approaches to the functioning of educational journalism in the media environment; 2) to trace the genre and thematic features of the analyzed educational media outlets (on the example of “Pedpresa”, “Osvita.ua”, “New Ukrainian School”, “Osvitoria”). The research methodology is content analysis of specialized media on educational topics. The main purpose of this study is to analyze news stories regarding children in the national print media in the last five years using top eight newspapers in terms of circulation and evaluate these news stories based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was issued by the UN and signed by Turkey. The research was undertaken as a case study. The study data were collected from top eight newspapers in terms of circulation between 2010 and 2014 in order to reveal when and how newspapers at national level represent children and the scientific content of impressions in the national media. Results show that children appear in the national media in mostly negative cases. In conclusion, it was observed in this study, children’s rights to life, development, protection, and participation were violated at both national and international levels. In this sense, news reflects the truth about “children’s rights violations”. However, the way that children appear in news and reflection in media constitute a secondary children’s rights violation.
The Use of News and Language in Turkish Press: Transformation of Last 50 Years

Publishing of an interesting story as news is usually a nonstop procedure, which needs prompt decisions. The prominent actors of this procedure are journalists and their decisions are affected by individual, social, and professional conditions. For a reporter, news-making activity is constructing the strongest message by evaluating the interaction of these conditions. Interrelationship between conditional variables and news judgement also describe the formation of the mass communication medium. This study will examine how media have been affected by Turkey’s social change and the transformation of the journalism profession and language in the last 50 years. To follow the trend of newspapers and news production, this research will analyze three Turkish newspapers’ (Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, and Milliyet) archival issues between 1961 and 2015. Findings are expected to enlighten the transformation of mass communication medium and the future of news production.

Turkey is a polarized society consisting of modern and conservative people. Cultural differences in this polarized society are actually a consequence of a long historical process. The dichotomy of culture and ideology in Turkish society has two significant breaking points. The first is the transition process of Turkish society to Islam between the 8 th century and the 14 th century, whereas the second is related to the concept of Westernization, the influences of which are still observable although it started in the 17 th century. These two occasions not only changed the lifestyle of Turkish society but also influenced the use of the Turkish language. In terms of word capacity, the Turkish language contains both Oriental/Islamic ideology and Western/Modern ideology within itself, and this impact is considerably recognizable from spoken language to written language and from scientific language to media language. Media entertainment contents also reveal this interaction. The objective of this study is to analyse the cultural and ideological polarization in Turkey by investigating the contents of the crosswords in five daily newspapers which are, respectively, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Yeni Akit and Zaman. Media usually has an ideological content; however, the fact that ideological and cultural polarization can also be explored at linguistic levels through crosswords has not been studied before. In this respect, firstly clarifying the concept of ideology in order to theoretically reveal how ideology is reinforced through language, this study basically focuses on the historical process of the cultural and ideological polarization and its reflections on the Turkish language. The study, linguistically analysing crosswords, has also discussed the relationship among entertainment, ideology and media. The data of the study were collected through content analysis method and were interpreted by means of critical discourse theory. In this respect, this study has a multi-methodological method. Ten crosswords from each newspaper have etymologically been analysed, and it has been found out that there are similarities between the words in the crosswords and the publication policies of the newspapers.

The regional newspaper industry in the UK is in freefall with sales down more than 60 percent in 10 years. With this decline has come cost-cutting. This study looks at how these cuts have manifested themselves in terms of the number of news stories now being printed in newspapers and the number of local people being quoted in the newspapers. The study has looked at a number of regional newspapers across 30 years to show the effect of the changing face of the newspaper business as the audience and advertising have moved online. The research includes interviews with experts on whether story count mattered and if fewer stories and local voices have damaged the product. This paper finds that generally newspaper companies with a web-first culture have been forced to reduce their local news content in their printed products as they concentrate their resources online. While fewer stories and voices cannot be blamed for the complete demise of the newspapers, it is a consequence of cost-cutting and disadvantages the product. Opinions do vary on the needs for high story count, but this paper shows that most experts believe it is important and that without it, printed newspapers have been damaged.
