A Comparison of On-premise to Cloud Migration Approaches: A Tale of Four Cloud Migration Processes

While cloud computing has certainly gained attention, the potential for increased uptake of the technology is still large. As a consequence, how to move and migrate to the cloud is an unanswered question for many organisations. Gaining an understanding of cloud migration processes from on-premise architectures is our aim here. For this purpose, we look at three provider-driven case studies based on the common three layers of cloud computing: Infrastructure (IaaS), platform (PaaS) and software (SaaS) as a service. These shall be complemented by a fourth, independent systems integration perspective. We extract common migration process activities for the layer-specific processes and discuss commonalities, differences and open issues. The results presented are based on expert interviews and focus groups held with major international cloud solution providers and independent consultants.

In today's competitive business environment, Information Systems are not a luxury; rather they are vital for survival. High costs of licensing, implementation issues, and missed opportunities in legacy systems led to the development of a new generation of Information System platforms called "Cloud" domain. However, Cloud, if not understood properly by managers, has many shortcomings. Moving toward Cloud is not the goal and even competitive advantage may suffer. Managers and change agents should undertake deep study over Cloud Information Systems and Software as a Service (SaaS) before deciding to move toward migration. In this chapter, the main elements and features in which CEOs and IT managers should consider in evaluating the SaaS migration option are provided, and enterprises may be acquainted with the concept, goals, and theoretical foundations of SaaS as a main Cloud-based service in the business environment.
Cloud migration: A case study of migrating an enterprise it system to iaas

This case study illustrates the potential benefits and risks associated with the migration of an IT system in the oil & gas industry from an in-house data center to Amazon EC2 from a broad variety of stakeholder perspectives across the enterprise, thus transcending the typical, yet narrow, financial and technical analysis offered by providers. Our results show that the system infrastructure in the case study would have cost 37% less over 5 years on EC2, and using cloud computing could have potentially eliminated 21% of the support calls for this system. These findings seem significant enough to call for a migration of the system to the cloud but our stakeholder impact analysis revealed that there are significant risks associated with this. Whilst the benefits of using the cloud are attractive, we argue that it is important that enterprise decision-makers consider the overall organizational implications of the changes brought about with cloud computing to avoid implementing local optimizations at the cost of organization-wide performance.

The cloud computing has acquired a great deal of attraction, the possibility for minimizing over and under provisioning through enabling a flexible sharing resource and allocation is still large. In this article, a complete analysis towards development of migration method from on premise to cloud will be presented. First we define cloud computing that includes three service models; platform, infrastructure, and software as a service over a network connection. This work demonstrates the issues which the decision makers are facing in the case of evaluating the feasibility of the migration legacy system in organization into cloud computing. Furthermore, describes our technology toolkit, which has developed to support this process. The efficiency of the proposed technology toolkit has being evaluated under testing as a case study that is exploring options to choosing deployment and cloud service models.

Cloud computing is defined to be Internet based computing technology, where the term 'cloud' simply means Internet - and cloud computing refers to services that are accessed directly over the Internet. This paper presents a novel framework for organisations to carry out a structured feasibility study on Cloud migration and to decide Cloud Migration Strategy. Following the framework helps an organisation to decide whether Cloud migration is a feasible option for them, and if so, the best strategic approach towards Cloud migration. It is a crucial and sensitive part for any organisation to decide whether they should move to Cloud Computing platform. The decision requires strategic approach with proper feasibility study. Several technological, human, security and financial factors are involved in decision making process to move to the Cloud. The proposed framework helps an organisation to carry out a feasibility study to decide whether to move to the Cloud, and if so, what would be the best approach towards Cloud migration. In the cloud computing technology stack, infrastructure has matured more than platform or software service technologies with respect to languages and techniques used for architecting and managing respective applications. Platform-asa-Service (PaaS) emerges as a focus for the near future that we will focus on. We look at software architecture and programming concerns in the context of migration to PaaS solutions, i.e. the transition of platform systems from on-premise to cloud solutions. We investigate best-practice approaches in cloud-aware coding in the form of patterns and formulate these as a migration process. While one-to-one mappings of software from on-premise to cloud platforms are possible, statelessness and data externalisation from stateful sessions and applications emerge as solutions if cloud benefits such as elasticity and performance are aimed at.
