This article deals with how Mme de Stael came up with her original definition of open aristocracy in the turbulent political and social circumstances of post-revolutionary France and under the influence of British debates on the French Revolution. British intellectuals such as Edmond Burke and Sir James Mackintosh as well as anonymous pamphleteers discussed about the French Revolution in relation to the on-going debate on the electoral reform in Britain. They shared a common approach to analyse the French Revolution from the point of view of social and professional origins of its principal actors. They also linked the French Revolution with the advent of the commercial civilisation and analysed its outbreak in terms of the presence or absence of the ascending "intermediary class." Finally, British intellectuals unanimously rejected the economic equalisation that they thought might come true as a result of the democratisation of French society. Mme de Stael integrated these...

Recently, various types of learner corpora have been compiled and utilized for linguistic and educational research. As web-based application programs have been developed for language learners, a large size of language learners' texts is able to be collected on the web. These learner corpora include not only correct sentences but also incorrect sentences. Our object is to take advantage of these incorrect sentences for linguistic and educational research. In language education field, the researchers and language teachers wish to investigate the mechanism why learners make such errors, for leaners not to make the same mistake again and to use the insights learned from such corpora. However, it is not an easy task to process large corpora without any annotation nor any software to search in them. In order to make use of the corpora for those research, it is required to extract the errors in them, to add useful information and to learn from the insights appearing in the real use. To this end, this study aims to do several tasks regarding learner corpora facilitation. The tasks are listed below.

This article attempts to make explicit the image of France in Japan as it is expressed in the discourse on luxe, a recent vogue-word in the Japanese mass media. The discourse on luxe, however, is not limited to contemporary Japan but its rise is inherent to modern Europe characterized by the development of commercial society and the secularization of society. In particular, eighteenth-century philosophes widely discussed pros and cons of luxury products. In particular, Rousseau\u27s stigmatization of luxury products seems somehow influential to contemporary France where although the free market economy is taken for granted, a consumption-oriented society remains seen as somewhat negative and the moral independence of individuals from the desire for luxury products is expected. In contrast, the analysis of the usage of the term, luxe, in Japanese women\u27s magazines reveals that the Japanese tend to see in European luxury goods something beyond their material values, a sophisticated...

In order to implement a decision-making mechanism in an intelligent system, a logical reasoning structure is usually supposed to play the major role. So far, this fashion was successful in the sense that it fits the computer programming. But for a human-oriented man-machine interface, it is required to incorporate intuitive human ways in determining what action to take for adjustment, and it leads to more flexible responses. Here in this paper, discussed are knowledge and rule structures together with the concept of context as basic stuctures to deal with learning and reasoning behind decision-making

While the transition to digital television is currently happening in most countries around the world, there has been increasing interest recently in enhancing the spectrum use efficiency especially in TV bands via cognitive radio based access where the bandwidth is reused on a non-interfering basis. The wideband and weak signal characteristic of leaky coaxial cable (LCX) is attractive for cognitive radio systems, however, its capacity has never been assessed in this type of application. In this study, we evaluate the ergodic capacity performance of a leaky coaxial cable for a cognitive radio based system coexisting with TV transmission in VHF and lower part of UHF channels. Based on measured data, the channel capacity was first computed by suboptimal constant power allocation. Then, water filling technique was used to compensate for the variations in the channel and the interference caused by the TV signal in occupied bands. Finally, the results showed that LCX can provide a capacity of about 20 Mb/s in a typical UHF channel within the 20 dB interference protection limit for digital television. However, the LCX system cannot satisfy the 51 dB interference protection limit for analog television in both VHF and UHF channels.
