Propolis is a highly adhesive and resinous product of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) which is produced from the exudations of plants. Bee propolis being a source of bioactive compounds like polyphenols and flavonoids imparts numerous biological properties including, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer activities. Present study was designed to elucidate the composition and antioxidant status of locally available propolis using in-vitro conditions. Propolis collected from locally found apiaries and its hydroalcoholic extract of propolis was prepared using different concentrations of ethanol and methanol. The results regarding proximate composition of propolis showed a higher proportion of ether extract (85.59±0.87%) and lowest contents of crude fiber (0.31±0.08%). In this research, the physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of propolis from honeybee beehives around Mashhad and the content of active compounds in propolis were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) both quantitatively and qualitatively. Physicochemical properties of the propolis sample (such as ash, moisture, soluble solids and insoluble solids and existing metal elements) were measured. The total phenolic and flavonoids compounds in the ethanolic extract of propolis were 40.126 mg/g (gallic acid) and 26.46 mg/g (quercetin), respectively. Antimicrobial tests showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract against Staphylococcus aureus was 100 mg/mL, while in the applied concentration MIC did not achieve against Escherichia coli. Also, the results of the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) test indicated that propolis extract on Staphylococcus aureus had only inhibitory effects. Evaluation of the content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in propolis extract by HPLC indicated that the flavonoid compounds included flavones (13.33 mg/g), flavonoids (6.375 mg/g), flavonols (8.235 mg/g) and flavanones (16.825 mg/g). Honeybee hives were setup in Feeg village of Al-Baha province-Saudi Arabia, where Ficus palmata plants are dominant in the Juniperus procera forest. Propolis samples were collected from these hives for over a year. The propolis samples were extracted using three different solvents including dichloromethane (DCM), mixture of dichloromethane and methanol (DCM:MeOH, v:v, 2:1) and methanol (MeOH). The chemical compositions of the different propolis extracts were determine by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The total phenol content (TPC) in each extract was quantified using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The free radical-scavenge activities (FRSA) of the various propolis extracts were measured by the method of 1,1-Diphenyl-2picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The chemical analysis showed that the propolis extracts of the different solvents varied in composition and contained mainly diterepenoids, triterpenoids, fatty acids, nalkane, and n-alkene. The TPC ranged from 30.5±7.8 for DCM to 168.5±23.3 mg GA/g for DCM:MeOH propolis extracts. The FRSA ranged from 6.56 % for the DCM to 19.22 % for the DCM:MeOH extracts of July 2014. The MeOH extracts of the propolis showed higher toxicity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus than the DCM:MeOH propolis extracts. The latter extracts showed the highest toxicities against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger.

Propolis (bee glue), a valuable biological mixture produced by European honey bees (Apis mellifera L.), is widely used as a remedy in traditional and alternative medicine, as an effective food biopreservative and as a nutritional value enhancer. The present study aimed to investigate eighty propolis samples collected from all twenty-eight districts of Bulgaria in the period of 2020–2022 in order to determine their physicochemical properties as well as their antioxidant and antimicrobial potential. The raw propolis samples exhibited brown or green colour depending on the climatic zone from which they are collected and pH values from 4.82 to 5.87, while the moisture content ranged between 0.98% and 2.97%. Objective: Propolis is a bee product collected by honeybees from a resinous substance of various plant sources. Its antioxidant activities are different from various geographic origins. This study aimed to analyze bioactive compounds by lC-MS/MS, compare antioxidant activity total phenolic and flavonoid contents in stingless bee propolis samples from several regions in Indonesia. Methods: The propolis samples were taken from stingless bee hives of Tetragonula clypearis from Sumbawa, Tetragonula laeviceps from Magelang, Tetragonula biroi from Bogor, and Geniotrigona thoracica from South Kalimantan). Analysis of bioactive compounds was identified by lC-MS/MS. The quantification of the chemical compound determined its total phenolics and flavonoid (TPC and TFC) contents. Chemical Composition and Biological Evaluation of Algerian Propolis from Six Different Regions

Propolis is considered a natural resin produced by the bee and is still used in folk medicine. Six propolis samples from Apis mellifera (P1-P6) collected from different regions in Algeria were investigated for their contents and biological activities. The obtained results revealed that propolis P1 exhibited the highest total phenolics (210.93 mg GAE/g propolis), total flavonoids (34.33 mg QE/g propolis), and tannins (23.36 mg CE/g propolis). For antioxidant activities, P1 showed strong free radical scavenging activity with EC50 values of 0.055, 0.0306, 0.109 and 0.071 mg/mL, respectively for DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and phosphomolybdenum assays. On the other hand, all propolis demonstrated antibacterial activities against G+ve bacteria (S. aureus) with slightly higher activities that were associated with P1 and P5 (9.83 and 10.92mm, respectively). Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources. The composition of propolis depends on time, vegetation, and the area of collection. This study examined the antioxidant activity of propolis from various areas of Korea: Chilgok, Cheongju, Geochang, Muju, Pocheon, and Sangju. Ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP) were prepared and evaluated for their antioxidant activity by-carotene bleaching, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging, and 2,2′-azinobis(3ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation decolorization assays. Furthermore, the major constituents in EEP were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis with a photodiode array and mass spectrometric detection, and each component was quantitatively analyzed. EEP from Cheongju and Muju had relatively strong antioxidant activity accompanied by high total polyphenol contents. Propolis from Cheongju contained large amounts of antioxidative compounds, such as caffeic acid, kaempferol, and phenethyl caffeate. Propolis is a resinous vegetal exudate modified by bees, and is interesting as a preservative and potentially functional product. This work dealt with studying the common phenolic profiles and antioxidant capacities of 13 bee propolis from different geographical areas. Both hyaluronidase and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities were also assessed and related when possible with particular phenolic compounds. High performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) analysis showed that every propolis contained p-coumaric acid (1.2–12.2 mg/g) and ferulic acid (0.3–11.0 mg/g). Pinocembrin, catechin, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) plus galangin were the main flavonoids. The biological activities of propolis samples are the result of many bioactive compounds present in the propolis. The aim of the present study was to determine the various chemical compounds of some selected propolis samples collected from Palestine and Morocco by the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography–Photodiode Array Detection (HPLC-PDA) method, as well as the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of this bee product. The chemical analysis of propolis samples by HPLC-PDA shows the cinnamic acid content in the Palestinian sample is higher compared to that in Moroccan propolis. The results of antioxidant activity demonstrated an important free radical scavenging activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH); 2,2′-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) and reducing power assays) with EC50 values ranging between 0.02 ± 0.001 and 0.14 ± 0.01 mg/mL.
