Dimensions of portuguese corporate social responsibility: a multivariate analysis
This paper investigates factors that can explain the motivations of Portuguese companies to a social performance. The study was based on a sample of nineteen large Portuguese companies, listed on the PSI 20 index, for a period of five year, since 2005 to 2009. A Factorial Analysis was applied to identify the dimensions of Portuguese Corporate Social Responsibility using variables reference on the Green Book of European Community Commission (ECC, 2001). The results produced two dimensions that may explain Portuguese corporate motivation social performance: (1) Standards and Legal Requirements and (2) Ethic and social conduct. Further research may be done to find correlations with these dimensions and financial and economic corporate performance.
Corporate social responsibility for the PSI 20 portuguese companies
In Europe, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issue was boosted by Jacques Delors in the Green Paper on social responsibility. Two dimensions were defined, the internal and the external ones, which include several aspects of what should be considered in the CSR performance assessment. Following the global market trend, Portuguese companies are also aware of these issues and report their social responsibility activities, although currently there are no social and sustainable indicators to assess the Portuguese CRS performance. The purpose of this paper is to present a multivariate analysis and to verify homogenous groups of companies with identical social responsibility. The study focused on 19 of companies in the Portuguese Stock Index PSI 20 and the analysis covered a period of five years, between 2005 and 2009. The results showed that 3 clusters were identified.
Corporate Governance, 2014
Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to provide an illustrative picture of how large corporations in a peripheral country such as Portugal engage in corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices and discuss the motivations underlying these practices. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, a case study methodology was used to explore CSR practices and the underlying motivations in two Portuguese companies. Findings – The results obtained suggest that some specificity may be present in the way of defining corporate responsibility for society by Portuguese companies. The Portuguese companies analysed seem to display an historical preference for corporate paternalism. This suggests that moral reasons can motivate firms (and individuals within them) to engage in social responsibility activities. Research limitations/implications – This work focuses on two specific case studies, but other cases might find diverse findings. Originality/value – It adds to the scarce research on CSR...
Social responsibility in Spain : Practices and motivations in firms
Management Decision, 2008
Purpose -The purpose of this study is to analyse CSR practices implemented by Spanish companies and the relationship between such practices and corporate financial performance. Design/methodology/approach -The empirical analysis carried out was performed in two phases or stages: analysis of the data obtained through content analysis; and analysis of the motivations behind CSR practices using a dependency model, multiple linear regression, enabling their effect on corporate performance to be explained. Several control variables were introduced to represent the size of the companies, expressed in terms of total assets, and the industry in which the firm operates. Findings -The paper underpins the fact that in Spain there has been a significant increase in practices favouring the reduction of environmental impact, as well as the creation of comfortable workplaces, especially promoting workers' rights. Several of these corporate practices associated with social responsibility in Spanish firms show a positive and significant impact on the rate of sales growth but there is a lack of impact on productivity or market value. Moreover, other responsible practices are not related to short-run improvements in companies' performance. Practical implications -The findings allow the authors to conclude that CSR practices in Spanish firms are geared towards social welfare, and that they are mainly associated with differentiation with regard to competitors and improving the company image, which lead to performance-linked economic advantages (such as sales increases). Originality/value -The paper has analysed corporate practices in a specific country separately (Spain) and has determined the relationship between CSR and firm performance.
Social responsibility practices and evaluation of corporate social performance
Journal of Cleaner Production, 2012
This paper develops an empirical procedure for measuring Corporate Social Performance (CSP) in firms, from the opinions of a group of firm managers concerning their perception of the importance of different aspects of appropriate business management from a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) perspective. The methodology is based on the model presented by Carroll (1979), considering the different interdisciplinary dimensions contemplated by CSR. The survey results are used to construct a second order factorial model that enables us to measure and evaluate firms' CSR considering the concept's different dimensions. The model enables us to globally measure firms' CSP by integrating its different dimensions and learning specific details of the variables involved and their relationships, and could be a useful guide for corporations willing to objectively implement sustainability management. We apply the procedure to evaluate the behaviour of a sample of 416 Spanish firms. Our results suggest that there is a positive relationship between firms' CSP and aspects such as size, degree of CSR awareness and stakeholder pressure. Therefore, in order to increase the degree of CSR implantation in Spanish firms, specific lines of action aimed at increasing the level of awareness of CSR practices should be addressed, particularly at small firms.

The financial implication of the adoption of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices is still an obscure field of study, because studies suggest controversial results. Thus, this research aimed to examine the relationship CSR and economic performance of the companies of corporate sustainability index (ISE) of mercantile and futures exchange of Sao Paulo stock exchange (BM&FBOVESPA). The amount of companies allowing online access to their responses of the ISE questionnaire determined the sample of this research. Thus, for the study period from 2011 to 2012, it has been possible to access the responses of 12 companies, composing the overall sample of this research. The results of the regression analysis allow to statistically assert that for the sample used, environmental performance (EP) contributes to improving economic performance, measured by all financial metrics used: return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), and net profit (NP). Statistically, it is only possible ...
Social responsibility and competitive success of firms in the Lisbon metropolitan region
Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Partial Least Squares Path Modeling: The conference for PLS Users, 2015
Social Responsibility is considered a crucial issue to enhance a long-term competiveness in firms because it has been demonstrated the causal relationship with several strategic business variables. This paper develops a conceptual model and applies Structural Equations Modeling technique to a sample of 91 firms from the Lisbon Metropolitan Region in order to understand the link between Social Responsibility and competitive success. The model provides a simple guidance for upgrading competitive success in firms operating in Portugal. We consider this work as a starting point to develop a more accurate model for Portuguese economic reality in the near future.
Factors Affecting Corporate Social Responsibility: An Empirical Study
Systems Research and Behavioral Science, 2013
This study aims to determine how the influence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Financial Performance at PT. Semen Tonasa. The type of research used in this research is quantitative descriptive. The data analysis technique used in the study was descriptive statistical analysis and multiple regression analysis. Based on the results of data analysis that has been done, it can be concluded that Corporate Social Responsibility does not affect the financial performance proxied in Return On Assets (ROA), this is because the size of the company's ROA will not change the disclosure of social responsibility by the company. Companies that have large assets do not necessarily pay attention to or show good performance through their concern for the social environment. Corporate Social Responsibility affects the financial performance proxied by Return On Equity (ROE), this means that the higher the CSR disclosure, the more ROE will increase, this shows that broad declarations provide a positive signal to interested parties, and Corporate Social Responsibility does not affect the financial performance proxied in Earning Per Share (EPS), this is because the size of the company's EPS will not affect the disclosure of social responsibility by the company, it is possible because the number of shares circulating in the company is less than optimal.

The purpose of this essay is to discuss the theoretical aspects related to adoption of corporative social responsibility practices and to verify the disclosure of social indicators, based on the Hopkins model. It seeks to answer the following questions: Which social indicators are presented in the corporate financial statements and social reports of the energy distribution companies that compose the Brazilian Neoenergia Group? What are the main actions evidenced by these companies to raise the quality and the technical standard of the services provided to consumers, since they are exclusive suppliers of this public service? It is an exploratory study, of a qualitative nature, accomplished through bibliographical, documental and multicase research. The companies under study also follow good corporative practices from the operational standpoint, offering good services with improving technical standards to their customers.
