The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about an unprecedented crisis all over the world, with huge repercussions on economic, social, political and health dimensions. In this study, we explore the economic impacts in case of India, specifically on the most dynamic sector of the economy, namely the tourism sector. India with its geographically and culturally vast landscape attracts travelers for a multitude of reasons-from business to leisure. But after this pandemic the position of tourism sector became unpredictable and unimaginable. The economic consequences of this outbreak will be serious and it will cause damages to tourist destinations including hospitality sectors. The tourism sector will face various problems like decline in domestic and foreign tourists, reduce foreign exchange earnings, unemployment etc. This paper is an effort to identify the consequences faced by the tourism sector during the pandemic period and suggest some measures for the post protection and upliftment of the sector.

India with its vast natural and historical resources is a hotspot of touring place from travelers of different location in the world. India was ranked 34 th in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019 published by World Economic Forum, up six position from 40 th in 2017. The travel and tourism industry provided 87.5 million jobs and accounted for 12.75% of the total jobs created in the country in 2019.At the same time this industry also contribute a big proportion to country's GDP. The government has been consistently providing support to the travel and tourism industry. The Ministry of Tourism formulates all national policies and programmes to aid and promote tourism in the country. But from the present scenario it is understand that this industry deeply hit by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, all organizers, stakeholders and government need an hour to take some early steeps to overcome the present slowdown in tourism industry, because the fastest growth in this industry is highly associated with country's GDP and employment creation process. This paper mainly emphasis on the extent to which this pandemic can affect the tourism industry in India and also analyse some measures and strategies which were offered by government and different organizations.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of COVID-19 on the tourism industry in India. The tourism industry as compared to the other important industries of a country is highly affected due to the internal and external shocks. In the past few months, the drastic outbreak of the novel coronavirus has caused great losses to the tourism industry. The Indian tourism industry accounted for 9.2% of India's GDP in 2018 and braced 42.673 million jobs, 8.1% of its total employment.The Indian tourism and hospitality industry is now gawking at a likely job loss of around 38 million. The governments across the world are trying to woo back visitors from domestic and international markets. Travel and tourism companies will have to recuperate the trust and confidence of people in the recovery period to travel again after the pandemic. The present study suggests that the travel and hospitality sector should restructure their approach by introducing measures like changing people's social behavior, wearing a mask when stepping out, social distancing, and hesitation to travel far distances.

The covid outbreak of this virus paralyzed the tourism industry by threatening both global and domestic tourist. The main purpose of this research paper is to study the impact of covid-19 virus on tourism industry especially Indian Tourism industry with statistical evidence, surveys and reports/ articles. This study also signifies the tourism sector importance in Indian economy and how it is dependent on the change in behaviour of tourists during and after the pandemic. This research paper aims at investigating the situation of Indian tourism industry during the COVID-19 pandemic and tries to provide useful information to the tourism industry players to deal with the changed preferences of tourists in the new normal by finding out change in behaviour for tourism components, this research paper is descriptive in nature, and is based on primary as well as secondary data. The secondary data has been collected from various online sources such as websites, research papers, etc. The primary data has been used to analyse the change in domestic (Indian) tourists' preferences for tourism components such as duration, accommodation, mode of transport and other components. For this purpose, their preferences before the pandemic as well as after the pandemic have been gathered from the respondents. For collecting the primary data, a structured questionnaire was created. It is evident that people have intentions to use own vehicle or flight for a trip instead of using public transport such as railway train or state-run bus or even a private operator bus and it can be due to concerns with safety measures, i.e., hygiene and proper social distancing as well as adherence to other norms for a safe trip

The importance of tourism sector in economic development has been recognized widely due to its contribution to the balance of payments, GDP and employment. Since last few years, Indian tourism industry has been growing at a rapid pace and it has vast potential for generating employment and earning large amount of foreign exchange. But due to spread of most infectious disease coronavirus which hit tourism sector very badly. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new pandemic that spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when person is suffering from cough or sneeze. The outbreak of COVID-19 is starting in China then spreading to worldwide that contributes to large number of deaths. To preventing spreading of this pandemic, many countries start implementing lockdown procedure to stopping the chain of infection for this new disease. The government-ordered lockdowns have disrupted life of billions and in the same time creates economic collapse scenario. The country with the most COVID-19 infections reported a record surge in unemployment. Many sectors of global economy suffers a lot to due to spread of COVID 19 and among all sectors-tourism is one which affected most because of lockdown and now people start avoiding travelling in domestic as well as internationally. With the large scale travel restrictions, quarantines, social distancing and lockdown, Covid-19 has given a major impact on the economic development worldwide. Due to resulting travel restrictions and drop in demand, Covid-19 pandemic also impact tourism industry significantly. India is a land of rich history, cultural and geographical diversity in the World. India has one of the Seven Wonders of the World and its diversity make India one of the best International tourist destinations. The worldwide eruption of Covid-19 has brought the world to a standstill, and tourism has been the worst affected of all major economic sectors. Modern tourism is closely linked to development and encompasses a growing no. of new destinations these dynamics have turned tourism into a key driver for socio-economics progress. Travel and tourism is a most affected by Covid-19 and decreased 44% in 2020. International tourists' arrivals in April down by 97% in this pandemic situation 1. It translates into a loss of 180 million international arrivals and about US$ 195 billion in receipts. Current position point to declines of 58% to 78% in arrivals for 2020, depending on the speed of the containment and the duration of travel restrictions and shutdown of boarders, thus the outlook remains highly uncertain. Tourism industry is impacted inflow of foreign tourists, a drastic fall in foreign exchange earnings which was close to ₹ 2,10,981 crs in Q1-Q3 2019. Henceforth, the present study has been focused on challenges and issues of tourism industry during this Covid-19 period.

PURPOSE: This study's primary objective is to assess the corona virus's impact on India's tourism and hospitality industry and its segments regarding revenue and job losses. Further, there is a need for fundamental control strategies and a crisis management plan. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Systematic literature review, secondary data, expert opinion surveys, and qualitative methods are the basis. OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION: The Indian government and tourism and hospitality marketers took numerous initiatives to mitigate losses and ensure people's safety. Post-COVID-19 is the new normal, where changes in technology and tourists' behavior are expected. Artificial intelligence, automated and digital systems are required to maintain the 'No Touch' policy. Therefore, tourism and hospitality marketers should consider the challenges addressed by tourism operators, hotel managers, and airline employees. This industry will take few years to recover to its standards in response to the restructuring, rightsizing, and downsizing approaches. MANAGERIAL AND RESEARCH IMPLICATIONS: COVID model and control strategies are given as crisis management plans.

Tourism is presently one of the greatest pretentious segments and the World Tourism Organization has studied its 2020 forecast for international arrivals and receipts, though it highlights that such predictions are likely to be further revised. The United Nations dedicated agency for tourism assumes that international tourist arrivals will be downcast by 20% to 30% in 2020 when compared with 2019 figures.
