The History of Efforts to save the New Gourna for Hassan Fathy towards the Restoration Project 2021 (original) (raw)

The Conservation of New Gourna Village According to Hassan Fathy's Philosophy and Ideas

Motivated by the declining condition of New Gourna, the international association " Save the Heritage of Hassan Fathy " made an appeal to several international conservation organizations to help with the conservation of the village. Responding to this appeal, the World Heritage Centre embarked upon a study of the village and a conservation initiative. The study recommended adopting two approaches to the conservation of New Gourna, one of which is based on the conservation of the village according to Hassan Fathy's ideas. The study summarized these ideas as " architecture that is based on appropriate technology or sustainability ". The aim of this study is to discuss the architect's genuine ideas concerning New Gourna, which should guide the conservation works in the village. The subject of the study was approached by means of a theoretical review of a broad literature that explores Hassan Fathy's ideas, one of which is Hassan Fathy's own book entitled " Architecture for the Poor ". An individual conservation initiative of one of the houses that Hassan Fathy designed in New Gourna, which reflects a clear understanding of his ideas, was explored as well. The previous literature review was supported by a number of interviews carried out in Egypt and the United States. The study revealed that the architect's main idea of the project was to sustain the traditional qualities of Old Gourna's community by introducing an architecture that responds to its diverse contexts. The study suggests adopting an approach to the conservation of the peasants' houses that depends on sustaining and enhancing the traditional qualities of New Gourna's community, instead of restoring the particularities of Hassan Fathy's original design.

Old Gourna: Redefining Sustainability in Vernacular Architecture/Urbanism

Old Gourna or, what remains of it, is a phantom village existing on the Theban hill amid the archaeological sites of Luxor Necropolis. Nevertheless, its old vernacular houses were designed and constructed in order to be sustainable and to subsist through hundreds of years. The indigenous inhabitants of Old Gourna village were relocated, after several attempts, by a governmental decision in order to protect the ancient Egyptian tombs. In 1960s, a first group of residents were evicted -after a strong resistance- to the New Gourna that was designed by Hassan Fathi. In 2009, the rest of the inhabitants were moved by force to another New Gourna, near Al-Taref village, that was built by the government. The two New Gournas were primarily both rejected by the Old Gourniis despite being completely different in all aspects. By comparing the three Gournas, this paper aims to demonstrate the particularity of Old Gourna, especially when it comes to vernacular architectural sustainability. It also conducts a comprehensive survey concerning the architectural/urban advantages and disadvantages of each one of three villages.

Derivation of a Design Solution for the Conservation of a Historical Payab in the Redevelopment of Doloeei, Gonabad

International Journal of Built Environment and Sustainability, 2020

This paper aims to demonstrate the conservation process of historic underground water access or Payab by proposing a multistage decision-making design in Gonabad city, northeast part of Iran. The Payab was in the center axis of a street in the proposed development of a new road which appeared to be against the new construction. The challenge was to develop the new road in the central axis without disturbing much the historic structure in the location. Hence, a request was made to keep both the new road and the historic Payab structure with a design solution. In order to tackle the design solution requested, a qualitative methodology was designed by way of site surveys, site documentation, graphical analysis and interviews. The findings of the research demonstrated contradicting opinions among the governors-laypeople, youngers-elders and males and females about the historic structure. Based on the findings, it was proposed that a protective shield, which aimed to conserve the historic structure under the weight of the new road is required, with a new entrance to be provided through an adjacent sidewalk to achieve consensus among those of diverse ideas. As a conclusion, conservation projects as demonstrated in this paper, like any other conservation projects elsewhere are faced with budget limitation, poor planning and the support it needed. As the historic structure has been part of the local built environment, the integration with other architectural elements in the context is of paramount importance to support the sustainability of the local built environment.

Resilience between Sustainability and Historical Buildings “Case study: The Khedive Ismail Palace, Mansoura city, Egypt”

Delta University Scientific Journal, 2023

Societies' values, cultural variety, and physical and intangible legacy are all being lost as a result of globalization, so, it is important to investigate how progress and legacy interact. Egypt has such a great legacy including the historical buildings that are considered to be a real gift. Unfortunately, most projects that aim at keeping those buildings were undertaken in the wrong way without adding real value. Those projects resulted in distorting the historical buildings. Mansoura City is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Egypt. It has such a great location on the river Nile, also it has a great number of historical buildings. All these buildings suffer from negligence and distortion. Although modern architecture has its features, it lacks the essence of Egyptian legacy. Rehabilitation allows the reutilizing of old depleted structures by assigning them new functions using new materials, and technologies, and introducing contemporary solutions to the historical buildings, without damaging their historical identity. By applying sustainable development opportunities and considering the requirements, the interrelationships between the historic areas and the urban context will achieve sustainable tourism and a conservation action plan for the historic surroundings of the Khedive Ismail palace, which has been considered one of the featured historical buildings in Mansoura city. The paper aims to provide steps or guidelines to achieve sustainable development of the rehabilitated building and improve the economic state through processes of rehabilitation of the building by using modern building technology and adding sophisticated elements that did not initially exist at the time of construction, and its architectural style. Examples of such features include smart systems technology and building management system, which can significantly contribute to the success of the building's economic rehabilitation and renovation.

An Analysis of the Architectural Properties of Eyüp Çeribaşi Masjid: Conservation Problems and Proposals

Gazi University Journal of Science, 2019

Here we investigate the protection problems of Çeribaşı Masjid, which has largely lost its spatial and visual identity and determine the available preservation approaches to the structure and its surroundings. Çeribaşı Masjid, which was built in the sixteenth century in Eyüp, İstanbul, consists of a closed prayer hall, a cemetery, and an ablution place. Çeribaşı Masjid remained in ruins for nearly two centuries and was repaired in 1996 by the Directorate General of Foundations. Over time, the rise of the roadway, inappropriate interventions, and unqualified additions made it difficult to perceive the masjid and damaged its relationship with its surroundings. Within the scope of this study, in the historical process, the changes that occurred in the Çeribaşı Masjid were examined together with archival documents, historical photos, and maps; the current situation of the masjid and its near surroundings were defined by the data obtained from measured drawings and on-site examinations; and the incorrect interventions were identified. As a result, a holistic protection approach (physical and cultural) was established that aims to transfer to future generations the structure and its surroundings, with their original identity.
