Demand for Modularization among Malaysian Manufacturers
This paper present the effect of using modularity process and product on demand perspective based on customer perception. Modularity has influence the firm performance and create a demand of customer. Customer can have their own choice because modularity process creates a variety to fulfill customer needs. Modularity allowed the components to recombined and coupling in the maximum number of ways which are the way to deliver customers a great variety. From this way, the module provider is free to perform design innovations and improvements as long as they comply with the standard interface. Therefore, modularization must happen at the product at technological level and at the same time need to be supported by modular organizational structure in order to be successful strategy. Modularity effect the demand perspective based on dynamic market, entrepreneurial strategic intent, production, heterogeneity of inputs, customer ability and willingness, differentiation, and customer services ...

The paper seeks to test empirically a variety of hypotheses related to four outcomes of manufacturing performance in terms of cost reduction, product quality, manufacturing flexibility, and cycle time reduction, and investigates its relationship with product modularity (PM) within some industrial companies in Egypt. The data collection instrument used was a questionnaire which was administrated to a total sample of 230 Egyptian managers. Sample selection was based on convenience sampling. Total 192 valid questionnaires were filled by the respondents representing a response rate of 83.48%. The hypotheses were tested using correlation analysis and stepwise regression to ascertain the validity of the hypotheses. All hypotheses were partially accepted. These findings show that the relationship between the dimensions of the four constructs of cost reduction, product quality, manufacturing flexibility, cycle time reduction and the construct of product modularity was not proved as suggeste...
An Investigation of Product Modularity and Supply Chain Performance at the Product Design Stage
Volume 9: 23rd International Conference on Design Theory and Methodology; 16th Design for Manufacturing and the Life Cycle Conference, 2011
The benefit of integrating product design decisions and supply chain design decisions has been noticed by researchers. This integration can provide better communication between design teams and operations groups. Accordingly, potential supply chain risks can be highlighted before the launch of a new product. Modularization is one of the most critical product design and supply chain design decisions because it will determine the assembly sequence and potential suppliers of the product in the supply chain execution. However, the impact of modularity level on supply chain performance is still unclear. The objective of this study is to tackle this issue. The proposed method covers product design functions and supply chain design functions, hence the product design decisions and supply chain design decisions can be considered simultaneously. The supply chain performance of all design concepts is comprehensively investigated so as to analyze the impact of modularity on supply chain performance regarding lead-time and cost. The results show that increased modularity is advantageous for the time-based performance of supply chain network whereas decreased modularity demonstrates superiority on cost performance.
The effects of product modularity on competitive performance
International Journal of Operations & Production Management, 2007
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of product modularity on four aspects of competitive performance: cost, quality, flexibility, and cycle time. Design/methodology/approach -Constructs were created from a comprehensive survey of the automotive sector. Regression is used to ascertain the relationship between the constructs of product modularity and performance with three different integration strategies as mediators. Findings -Modularity positively and directly influences each aspect of competitive performance for each integration strategy tested. Indirect effects were found for each integration strategy for cost and flexibility; and for manufacturing integration and cycle time. Practical implications -A product modularity strategy enables simultaneous improvements on multiple dimensions of competitive performance. Originality/value -This research is the first to empirically validate the effects of product modularity on competitive performance. Furthermore, it provides insight into the exact nature of product modularity's influence on competitive performance.

Overview of Malaysian Modularity Manufacturing Practices
American Journal of Industrial and Business Management, 2013
Modules and modularity have been popular concepts in operations research instead of products used in Malaysia. In the latest development, Modularity is very important in product design of manufacturing considerations for efficient assembly and complexity to make it better and fasten the process and products. The paper present is a study on overview of modularity products and manufacturing practices in Malaysia such as Traditional Malay House, fordable chair and maintaining services. The process of modularization makes the functional independence as the goal of good design. For the best marketing and end user, industry using modularization process or products leads to creation of product families and uniformity. To make the process of modularity successful, the industry has to ensure that modularity should maintain independence between components and processes in different modules and interchangeability between modules. This paper discusses the modules and modularity which are applied among the manufacturing in the Malaysia in the context of physical products and services.
The purpose of this research is to study the effect of product modularity on performance outcomes. The mediating effects of supplier, design, and manufacturing integrations are also examined. This study is based on a survey of 381manufacturing firms in Saudi Arabia. Using empirical research, this study analyses the direct and indirect effects of product modularity on performance outcomes. Results indicate a direct, positive relationship between product modularity and performance outcomes and found mixed support on the effects of product modularity on mediation strategies. This research tests theories that have been primarily applied in western country settings. The value of this paper is that, it is one of the first of this kind, conducted in the Middle East region, and adds empirical support, which was previously lacking in extant literature.
Direct and Mediated Effects of Product Modularity on Development Time and Product Performance
IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, 2013
Product modularity is often considered a crucial driver for the improvement of new product development (NPD) performance, in terms of NPD time and product performance, especially in those contexts characterized by a high product variety and constantly changing demand. However, quantitative studies demonstrating these links are scant and an increasing amount of anecdotal evidence suggests that there is a need to develop a more complete theory on the effects of product modularity on NPD time and product performance by examining the potential mediating effect of supplier involvement in NPD. To meet this need, we analyzed the impact of product modularity on NPD time and product performance, and whether supplier involvement in NPD can mediate "modularity-NPD time" and "modularity-product performance" relationships. Data from a sample of 201 manufacturing plants demonstrate that product modularity significantly affects NPD time and product performance. In addition, the impact of modularity was partially mediated by the involvement of suppliers in NPD. A better understanding of this effect can contribute to clarifying the mechanisms by which product modularity affects NPD time and product performance and thus could give guidance to managers on how to lever product modularity in order to improve the NPD process. Customized products help firms creating differentiated value for consumers in highly competitive markets. Modular product designs enable firms to fulfill market requirements for customization while balancing profitability targets. In modular product design, larger systems are broken down into independent sub-components, while the functionality of the entire system is preserved. While product modularity has received great attention from the literature in production and process optimization, research on consumer perceptions of modular products is still in its infancy. The present study develops a two-dimensional scale for product modularity as a basis for an online consumer survey, assessing their perceptions of modular product designs and potential effects of product modularity on product adoption intention. Particular value of this study lies in the application of a consumer research vantage point in the literature field of modular product design.
