Roads with flexible pavement are pavements that use asphalt as an aggregate binder, so they are much in demand rather than rigid pavement. Road infrastructure requires maintenance whose conditions must be maintained on an ongoing basis. The use of plastic packaging cannot be separated in everyday life. HDPE (High density polyethylene) is high density polyethylene. Based on the problem of the amount of used plastic waste currently available, this research is needed to find out how well the pavement uses the use of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) plastic as mixed plastic waste. After testing the laboratory and analyzing it according to the General Highway Specifications for normal composition 1 without a mixture of 0%, the asphalt content that meets all the requirements is estimated at asphalt level between 5.6% - 6%. Whereas in composition 2-4 with HPDE plastic waste 4%, 8%, and 12%. From the results of the research with 4 different compositions, it is obtained that the optimal asph...

This paper is concerned with the possibility of using plastic bottle waste as an ingredient to the Asphaltic Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC). This research is explores the effect of adding plastic and cement as ingredient to the mixture of asphalt concrete on the characteristics of Marshall. Plastics that are added are 2:4 and are 6% in weight. It was observed that the optimum bitumen content on the addition of 4% plastic and Marshall stability increases by 19% compared to the AC-WC without addition of plastic. The positive effect of plastic bottle on the characteristics of Marshall, along with its enviromental advantages, make this material a feasible additive.
Performance Evaluation of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete by Using Polymeric Waste Polyethylene
Proceedings of the First EAI International Conference on Computer Science and Engineering, 2017
Asphalt plays an important role in the construction of flexible pavements due to its binding properties. However, it has poor properties that are improved using synthetic polymers. This study evaluated performance of hot asphalt concrete by use of polymeric waste polyethylene based on standard methods, including AASHTO and Marshall Stability. The results revealed a decrease in penetration value with increasing polymer content in Asphalt, suggesting that the polymer hardens the modified asphalt; increasing softening point with increasing polyethylene content due to the polyethylene added; and increasing fire and flash points of the modified asphalt with increasing polythene content, suggesting low propensity of hazardous situation since the inflammability of asphalt decreases with increasing polymer content. The study concluded that waste plastic materials are effective in modifying asphalt for construction of flexible pavements despite the need to ascertain the exact proportions of the mix for achieving the best modified bituminous concrete.
Utilization of Plastic Bottles Waste in Asphalt Concrete Mixture
IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science
This paper deals with the innovation of road construction materials by the use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as asphalt mixtures. The PET was obtained from plastic bottles waste. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of the PET on Marshall parameters on asphalt concrete pavement. The wet method is used in this research. It means that PET plastic material is directly mixed into asphalt when the asphalt is heated, then aggregates are added. In this research, asphalt with penetration of 60/70 is used. Its optimum asphalt content (OAC) is 5.7 percent while The percentages of the added PET are 3 percent, 4 percent, 5 percent, 6 percent, and 7 percent of the asphalt by weight. The results show that the addition of PET plastic waste into the mixture has a significant positive effect on the Marshall parameters of asphalt concrete pavement. The addition of PET waste has been able to increase the value of other Marshall parameters, including Voids in Mix (VIM), Voids in Mineral Aggregates (VMA), Voids Filled with Asphalt (VFA), Flow, and Marshall Quotient (MQ). This research result will contribute to a significant outcome in emerging a sustainable material for road infrastructure.

Flexible pavement structures that use asphalt as a binder are currently the mainstay of the Indonesian people because of their large load-bearing capacity and economical construction costs. One type of flexible pavement used is asphalt concrete with the top surface layer or Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC). The use of asphalt from the petroleum refining process is one of the problems because its availability is decreasing. However, the condition of the road pavement which has a limited life requires periodic repairs to maintain the condition of the road. In addition, there are also problems regarding the processing of plastic waste which is still not optimal. Based on data published by the National Waste Management Information System in 2020 as much as 18.3% of the total waste generated. This figure increased by 2.3% from the previous year. Sukoharjo Regency also experienced an increase in sales of plastic waste by 1.16% from 14.04% (in 2019) and now to 15.20% (in 2020). Plas...
Improvement for Asphalt Mixture Performance Using Plastic Bottle Waste
International Journal of GEOMATE, 2021
Lately, plastic waste has become a problem in our society, due to the negative impact that it has on our environment. To mitigate this, the reuse of plastic bottle wastes and other local materials should be encouraged. In this paper, the authors present an innovative application for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) that is obtained from plastic bottle wastes, as an additive to Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC), a hot mix asphalt (HMA) type. The AC-WC sample that contained the PET was measured using the wet method to determine the Marshall parameters of the samples. The type of bitumen used as the specimen is asphalt, which has a penetration value of 60/70. The optimum asphalt content (OAC) obtained from the preliminary study was found to be 5.7% of the total asphalt weight. The results show that AC-WC mixture strength improves when plastic bottle waste is used, which can be correlated with an increase in stability. This finding shows that plastic bottle waste and other local materials have an alternate use as a road pavement material.
IMPROVEMENT OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE BY USING WASTE POLYETHYLEN TEREPHTHALATE & POLYPROPYLENE

The absences of an efficient management of municipal solid waste (MSW) regarding to use waste plastic material which inundated our cities and towns is growing challenge for developing countries including Malaysia. On other hand, growing traffic on roads changing environment and their impact on the road pavement resulted road failure and distress caused negative impact on economy of the country. This study examines properties of the waste polymers materials such as water bottles (polyethylene terephthalate, PET) and disposable plastic cups (polypropylene, PP). These polymers were added by using wet process to the conventional bitumen penetration grade (80/100) prepared Marshall Samples using ACW-14 to investigate Marshall Parameters of polymer modified bitumen and compare with conventional bitumen. Basic penetration, softening point, ductility and rotation viscosity test was performed and study finding shows that penetration, ductility, viscosity decrease while softening point increase by addition of polymers. Marshall analysis of the study found that by addition of 9.0 % polymers to the bitumen by weight of 5.5% at optimum level increase Marshall properties and shows positive response for both polymers. Such as stability increase up to 60-70%, stiffness, flow, density and voids of the polymer modified bitumen found positively improved. Bitumen properties were improved as well as Marshall Stability of the modified bitumen found improved. In conclusion the polymers modified bitumen improves stability, workability and reduce deformation in road pavement.
Study the Effect of Adding High-Density Polyethylene on the Asphalt Mixture
Proceedings of International Structural Engineering and Construction
This paper aims at studying the impact of adding high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on the 3⁄4” hot mix asphalt (HMA). Polyethylene is used as it forms a considerable amount of the existing plastic wastes in the world in general and in Palestine at specific. These plastic materials are used as additives to check the performance and the characteristics and properties of the HMA. Accordingly, six different batches of asphalt concrete (AC) samples are prepared using polyethylene as a percentage of the weight of optimum bitumen in varying proportions (0%, 2%, 4%,6% 8%, and 10%). The performance of the HA mixture is examined by checking different parameters such as stability, flow, air voids, VMA, density, etc. The dry process of binominal mixtures (Marshall Method) is used and the required and needed experiments are carried out according to the ASTM specifications. The results indicate that the addition of high-density polyethylene improves and refines the properties of the 3⁄4 inch HMA c...
Performance Evaluation of Waste Polyethylene and PVC on Hot Asphalt Mixtures
Since the forefront invention of Polyethylene and Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), it has been spasmodically used in every possible purpose which is biologically non-degradable and has a blimp environmental problem leading astringent environmental impact. Nevertheless, for such property of sustainability the polyethylene and PVC have been reused in the field of transportation engineering for enhancing the property of asphalt binder, since for having a desirable binding property. At the same time the recycling of waste polyethylene and PVC can save disposal sites and reduce the amount of inert drawn from quarries. In this investigation, waste polyethylene and PVC as the sort of polymer is used to investigate the potential prospects to enhance asphalt mixture properties and to check the design criteria of asphalt mixture using this two modifier at optimum binder content. The investigation concentrated on the test of modified binder properties and Marshall mix design was used, first to determine the optimum binder content and then further to test the modified mixture properties. The tests include the determination of unit weight, stability, flow and voids characteristics. Some of the measured properties of asphalt mixture with the modifier used in this study were within the acceptable recommended limits. On the basis of experimental results, it is concluded that the asphalt mixtures with waste polyethylene modifier up to 10% and waste PVC modifier up to 7.5% can be used for flexible pavement construction in a warmer region from the standpoint of stability, stiffness and voids characteristics.
