Augmented Reality in English Language Pedagogy: An Innovative Techno Culture for Contemporary Classrooms-A Meta Review

International Journal of Advanced Science and Technology, 2020

Augmented Reality is ever-growing technology that hooks the attention of the users which ensures in-depth knowledge and information through interacting with the virtual objects in the real-world environment. In the arena of English language education, wide usage of technology and technological gadgets to provide the learner with the real language experience and make learning more interesting as well as interacting. AR is the newer techno-pedagogy that enable the learner to enhance the different aspects of the target language. The present study focused on the systematic review of reviews of scientific studies which analysed the Augmented Reality technology in contemporary English language learning. The findings of the study are: AR enhances English language learning, increases motivation to learn the language, enhance positive attitude towards the language, feel the learners enjoyable to learn the language (either conscious or subconscious learning) in the AR environment, rich vocabulary can develop through the application of AR. AR also enables the learners to enhance their target language skills. The study also analysed the critical issues while using AR in the classroom as general and specific in language learning like financial constraints, privacy and security policy, deviating the attention from the real concept etc.

Teaching English with Augmented Reality Technology: Evaluative Feedback of Elementary School Student

The application of new educational technologies to the teaching of English in classrooms around the world is an important endeavour. One of the outstanding innovations is Augmented Reality technology, which is a computer-generated technology that enhances user perception and experience. The researcher selected Augmented Reality technology since its most attractive to young learners in teaching English as foreign language classrooms as its capacity for learners to see and experience the real world together with 3-dimensional content embedded into it. After explaining Augmented Reality in the context of new technologies development, this paper gives details about an evaluation by a sample drawn from 484 elementary school learners in Bangkok classrooms of an Augmented Reality 3D pop-up book called The Seed Shooting Game, which has been designed for a blended learning environment, a combination of electronic curriculum material within a traditional teaching context. The statistical feedback given by these young learners through a survey was very positive with no difference between the two gender groups.

The Application of Augmented Reality (AR) to Language Learning and its Impact on Student Motivation

International Journal of Linguistics Studies, 2022

The recent emergence of digital authoring tools related to Augmented Reality (AR), such as Zooburst, Roar or Aumentaty, has facilitated the integration of this cutting-edge technology in Education. Consequently, different publications have come out to light about the affordances and limitations of integrating technology AR in the EFL/ESL classroom. Thus, this study seeks to analyze and review the recent trends in AR implementation in the English as a Foreign Language Classroom (EFL) and to present the main projects aimed at teaching English with AR-based projects that have been published in the latest years in WOS and Scopus. Following the methodology, the improvement in the performance of the student in different areas of study has been proved while using AR in EFL teaching.

Implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) as A Teaching Media in English Language Learning in Elementary School

Jurnal Obsesi : Jurnal Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini

This study discussed the application of augmented reality as a medium of learning in English subjects in elementary schools. This study used multimodal analysis. The theory used is Multimodal by Kress and Leeuwen. The object of this research was a teacher who teaches English subjects in elementary schools. The location of this research is at one Elementary school in Medan city. In data collection used nonverbal data in the form of images, assisted by recording techniques, with the method of listening. The data collection instrument used a questionnaire, and an interview sheet. The results of this study are teachers are able to use Augmented Reality-based learning media in learning English well. Hence, there is an increase in student learning outcomes in English subjects after using Augmented Reality-based learning media. Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that there is an increase in student learning outcomes before and after use which is obtained through the results of...

School of the Future: A Comprehensive Study on the Effectiveness of Augmented Reality as a Tool for Primary School Children’s Education

Applied Sciences

With the emerging technologies of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), the learning process in today’s classroom is much more effective and motivational. Overlaying virtual content into the real world makes learning methods attractive and entertaining for students while performing activities. AR techniques make the learning process easy, and fun as compared to traditional methods. These methods lack focused learning and interactivity between the educational content. To make learning effective, we propose to use handheld marker-based AR technology for primary school students. We developed a set of four applications based on students’ academic course of primary school level for learning purposes of the English alphabet, decimal numbers, animals and birds, and an AR Globe for knowing about different countries around the world. These applications can be played wherever and whenever a user wants without Internet connectivity, subject to the availability of a tablet or mobile ...

A Systematic Review of Studies on Augmented Reality Based Applications in Primary Education

2022

This research aims to examine the researches based on augmented reality-based applications conducted for primary school students between 2015-2021 and to determine the positive and negative effects of this applications on students. The document analysis method was used in the research. In this context, articles containing AR-based applications prepared for primary school students using the keywords “augmented reality”, “primary education”, “elementary education”, “teachers ‘and parents’ perceptions” were examined in ScienceDirect, ERIC, Sagepub and SpringerLink databases. As a result of the research, 48 articles were determined in accordance with the criteria. As a result of the content analysis, these studies were divided into seven different categories under the augmented reality theme: teacher and parent perceptions, reading and literacy skills, science education, special education, language education, mathematics education, and history/social sciences education. It has been observed that these practices improve students’ motivation, academic achievement and remembering skills, increase their vocabulary, help them develop a positive attitude towards lessons, and improve their spatial thinking and creativity skills. In addition, there are also studies that have negative results stating that it limits the imagination, requires a lot of time for the application, it prevents reading because it is distracting, there is no available amount of free AR-based applications, and there are inadequate professional support to teachers for the use of these applications.
