The Relationship Between Students' Vocabulary Knowledge and Their Writing Recount Text Ability (A Correlational Study at the Eighth Grade of MTs N 5 Jakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017) (original) (raw)

This study aimed to find the relationship between two variables; vocabulary knowledge (X), and students' writing ability on recount text (Y). This study was conducted at MTs N 5 Jakarta. There were 35 students chosen as the sample of this study who were determined by using a purposive sampling technique. The method used of this study was quantitative with the correlational design. The instrument used to obtain the data were vocabulary test and writing test of recount text. The data obtained from the both instrument were calculated and analyzed by using statistical procedure of Product Moment Correlation to find out if there was any relationship between two variables. The result showed that the index value of correlation coefficient (r xy) was 0.909. The value of r xy was higher than r t with the level of significance of 1% and 5% with df=33, in which 0.909 > 0.442 and 0.909 > 0.344. It means that the relationship between the two variables was in the very strong level in the scale between 0.90-1.00. Hence, the alternative hypothesis (H 1) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In conclusion, there was a significant relationship between students' vocabulary knowledge and their writing ability on recount text. iv 4.
