The Issues of English Teachers’ Professional Development
Dirasat: Human and Social Sciences, 2021
This research concerns with the issues of professional development faced by English teachers in Aceh, Indonesia. Teachers must enrich knowledge and awareness of their professional development for their careers. It is also imperative for schools and policymakers to host more continuous programs that can increase teachers' quality and ability. Data were collected from 92 English teachers using a questionnaire and the results were analyzed by using a simple percentage formula. The results showed that there were six issues posed by the teachers. They concern with the programs most participated by teachers for their development, the programs with the most influence, the incentives they receive for participating in these programs, the informal programs that they can do on their own and their impact on their professional life as a teacher, the topics that require enhancement in the future development program planning, and finally, the reasons that can prevent teachers from participating in these development programs. English teachers' professional development should be improved by government programs so that the teachers' pedagogical theories and practices can be fully developed, studied, and evaluated for greater improvement of the country's education system.
Professional Development of Teachers: past and future
2009
The professional development of teachers is regarded as an individual and collective process that should be accomplished in the workplace of the teacher, i.e. the school. Furthermore, it is looked upon as a contribution to the development of the teacher's professional skills, by means of a variety of both formal and informal experiences. The concept of professional development has changed over the last decade, as a result of increasing understanding of how the teaching to learn processes are created. Indeed, professional development has recently come to be viewed as a long term process, covering different types of opportunities and experiences that are systematically planned to stimulate the development and evolution of the teacher.

Teachers' Professional Development
Teacher education around the world is being planned for many years as a formal professional education. The paper explores various forms of teacher education programs and initiatives in Pakistan. Particularly during the ten years between two successive National Education Policies (1998 and), many major initiatives were taken for teacher education. The focus of teacher education has shifted from quantity to quality with the efforts of Government initiatives and support of foreign agencies. With the assumption that teacher quality will only improve when the teachers themselves are willing to improve, we conducted a survey study to explore teachers' views about their own professional development. The major objective of the study was to investigate the teachers' perceptions, teachers' practices, availability of opportunities, and responsibility of teachers' professional development. The findings lead us to explore the ways of how to make teachers' professional development an intentional practice rather than an imposed learning.
