Awareness About Glaucoma and Associated Factors Among Glaucoma Patients Visiting Munawar Memorial Hospital Chakwal

˜The œtherapist, 2024

Glaucoma is a complex of optic neuropathies that is identi ed with degeneration of retinal nerve bres and ganglion cells [1]. Due to raised intraocular pressure and resultant damage to optic nerve and ganglion cells; there is irreversible blindness that drastically affects the quality of life of the patients [2, 3]. However, its progression is arrested by 30-50% reduction of intraocular pressure. Its commonest form is primary open angle glaucoma that is greatly linked with old age, positive family history and high myopia [4]. Glaucoma is about 3-5% prevalent globally among people aged 40 years or above and is anticipated to prevail among 112 million people worldwide by 2040. Tham et al., in his systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that primary angle closure glaucoma is predominant among Asian inhabitants while primary open angle glaucoma is more prevalent among African male urban dwellers [5]. Japanese on the other hand have been detected with higher incidence of normal tension glaucoma [6]. By 2010, blindness among one out of 15 persons was attributed to glaucoma while visual impairment among one out of 45 patients was linked with glaucoma [7]. Glaucoma is mostly diagnosed at progressive stage with considerable visual impairment knowing su ciently about the risk factors of glaucoma and its clinical manifestations would enable the patients to pursue consultation for their problem quite earlier [8].

Awareness and knowledge on glaucoma practice

World Journal of Biomed Research, 2019

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Awareness and knowledge about this blinding disease will increase the uptake of screening services. The aim of this research was to determine the level of awareness of glaucoma by general outpatient attendees and also their knowledge of the disease. This was a cross-sectional study of consenting patients attending the general medical outpatient between February and July 2016 using a semi- structured interviewer administered questionnaire to collect data on demographics (including education), awareness and knowledge of glaucoma. Of the 255 that responded to the questionnaire, 116(45.5%) were males and 138(54.5%) were females; age range 17-79 years (42.31±16.84). Twelve (4.7) had no formal education, 29(11.4) had primary education only, 17(6.7%) had junior secondary school only, 70(27.5) had senior secondary school only, while 127(49.8%) had tertiary education. Sources of information were hospital and mass media 43(35.0%) each. One hundred and twenty three(48.2%) had heard about glaucoma while 132(51.5%) gave a 'no' response. Eighty eight (34.5%) knew that glaucoma was an eye disease but only 1(0.4%) related it to the nerve and 3(1.2%) said it was caused by raised intraocular pressure while 40(18.0%) said it can be inherited. Sixteen (6.3%) said that loss of field of view was a sign of glaucoma. Ninety (35.3%) said that glaucoma can be treated. Only 21(8.2%) had ever had eye screening and 194(75%) of those who had not done eye screening had no reason for not doing. Knowledge of glaucoma in this population is very low. Health education through use of different media of information should be adopted

Awareness and Knowledge of Glaucoma and their Associated Factors among People Visiting a Tertiary Level Hospital in Central Nepal

Background Glaucoma is one of the major causes of irreversible blindness globally. Almost 60 million people globally are affected by glaucoma making it the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Diagnosis of glaucoma early on is vital for timely management and prevention of blindness. However, it is challenging to diagnose it early because it is asymptomatic in the initial stage, and there is also the dearth of appropriate screening tools. Awareness, knowledge, and beliefs are believed to influence the treatment-seeking behavior of people as well as their uptake of services. Objective To assess the awareness and knowledge about glaucoma among general patients and patient attendants visiting Dhulikhel Hospital. Method We conducted a cross sectional quantitative study among general patients visiting Dhulikhel Hospital. We collected data using face-to-face interviews with semistructured questionnaires. We analyzed data in R version 4.0.3 (2020-10-10). We presented numerical variables as mean and standard deviation whereas categorical variables as frequency and percentage. We determined factors associated with awareness and knowledge of glaucoma using logistic regression analysis and estimated adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval. Result Of 379 participants, a total of 214 (56.5%) participants had heard about glaucoma. Out of the participants who heard about glaucoma, the mean knowledge score was 48.3±21.7 and 53.3% had good knowledge on glaucoma. The odds of having heard about glaucoma were two percent lower (AOR=0.98; 95%CI: 0.97-0.99; p-value 0.036) in the older participants compared to one year younger participant, 1.98 (95%CI:1.01-3.86; p-value 0.046) times higher among literates and 2.79 (95%CI: 1.76-4.41; p-value < 0.001) times among participants with previous ocular examination. The odds of having good knowledge was 1.94 (95%CI: 1.10-3.42; p value 0.021) times among participants with previous ocular examinations. Conclusion The knowledge and awareness regarding glaucoma in a hospital-visiting population in central Nepal was low. Half of the participants were unaware of the disease glaucoma and half of the participants who heard of the glaucoma had poor knowledge on glaucoma.

AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE OF GLAUCOMA AMONG ADULT PATIENTS AT THE EYE CLINIC OF A TEACHING HOSPITAL

Background: Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is an irreversible blinding disease that often presents late because it is symptomless in the early stages. Prognosis depends on early diagnosis and treatment and patient understanding of their condition. Many patients present late because of poor awareness and knowledge. This study was conducted to assess patient's awareness and knowledge of glaucoma in a referral Teaching Hospital. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among glaucoma patients aged 40 years and above attending the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Patients were selected by simple random sampling. They were recruited after informed consent had been given. A questionnaire on demographics, socio-economics and awareness of glaucoma was administered. Results: There were a total of 117 participants, 61 males and 56 females. The median and modal age group was 50 and 59 years. Amongst the participants, 74% were aware of glaucoma. There were no significant statistical difference in the various age groups, sex, ethnic group or religion and their awareness of glaucoma (P>0.05).There were statistically significant differences between those who had higher education and their awareness of glaucoma (P< 0.001). Yet only 27% of these had accurate knowledge of glaucoma. Conclusion: Glaucoma awareness in patients attending Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is high. Higher education was associated with higher awareness yet this was not translated into accurate knowledge as there were significant misconceptions .There is the need to review the contents of health education with the aim of reducing dangerous misconception of glaucoma and targeting the lower socioeconomic population.

Journal of Medical Sciences and Health, 2021

The objective of the study was to assess the level of glaucoma awareness, knowledge, and self-care practices among health-care professionals at a medical college in Central India. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based observational study was carried out at Durg, Chhattisgarh, India, over a period of 2 months from February 2019 to April 2019. The study included 166 consenting adult health-care professionals-clinicians (excluding ophthalmologists), non-clinical doctors, and paramedical staff. Responses to a structured questionnaire covering various aspects of glaucoma knowledge and selfpractice were obtained with a face-to-face interview. Data were reported and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's Chi-square test. Results: One hundred and fifty-four (93%) participants had heard of glaucoma. Of these, 12 members left the questionnaire incomplete and were excluded (response rate 92%). Mean age of respondents was 35 ± 9.81 years. Respondents included 42 clinicians, 48 non-clinical doctors, and 52 paramedical staff. The knowledge about association of glaucoma with raised intraocular pressure (81%) was better than optic nerve damage (64%). Majority of the participants had knowledge that increasing age (76%) and family history (76%) were risk factors for glaucoma. Most paramedics were mistaken of digital screen usage (P = 0.004), prolonged reading (P = 0.01), and stress (P = 0.012) causing glaucoma. About 25% thought that glaucoma is painful and 37% opined that central vision deteriorates earlier (P < 0.01). Only 19% had undertaken glaucoma screening for themselves. Conclusion: The study revealed unsatisfactory knowledge and deficient self-care practices concerning glaucoma among healthcare personnel including clinicians. This highlights the need to sensitize all cadres of medical staff to promote knowledge of this irreversible disease activating timely screening and adequate management for preventive ophthalmic care.
