A roadmap from UMTS optimization to LTE self-optimization (original) (raw)

Self-Organizing Networks (SON) are being introduced by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as part of LTE systems to improve wireless network operations. This article presents an optimization framework that transitions from manual to automated optimization by leveraging existing UMTS networks for insights. It outlines the key challenges and stages involved in implementing SON, including data collection, parameter tuning, and optimization procedures, demonstrating practical applicability through a case study on coverage optimization in a real UMTS network, with projections for LTE adaptation.
