Arduino Based Color Detection for Visual Impaired

Blindness is the condition of poor visual perception, estimation from World Health Organization state that 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide, 39 million are blind and 246 million have low vision. A Blind person with proper training can function like any person with perfect vision, but there are the small things that can improve the quality of a blind person life, like color detection which is the focus of this project. Being able to detect color can help in many ways, like identifying colors of clothes or even identifying uniquely colored objects (e.g. paper money) and appreciating art. The project will help overcome challenges that visually impaired people face in daily basis, by creating a way to detect colors and providing unique biofeedback for each color. The proposed embedded system imbibes Arduino microcontroller which reads the RGB data from the color sensor TCS 230 which when processed further classify the color based on the lookup table programmed within the controller. The color so identified is displayed along with the RGB combination and also audio feedback of the color identified is given using DF player interfaced with Arduino. During the testing the embedded system the success rate of identification of colors was found to be 93%.
The Design of Color Detector Device for Visually Impaired People

This study was conducted to create a design of color detector device that can meet the needs of people with visual impairments. In the early stages of research, interviews was held to determine the difficulties that were being faced by the visually impaired when identifying color difference. Further interviews were conducted in order to obtain their further needs to the design of a color detector device. The next thing to do was to determine the importance rating of each need that was identified. Based on the importance rating of the needs, some design concepts were generated by using some combination tables. Three design concepts are generated and concept selection was conducted by involving users and external designer. Anthropometric data was used for determining the dimensions of the selected design. A colour recognition device for the visually disabled people

Visually disabled people rely on the sense of touch and sense of hearing to help them recognise anything in their everyday life. Colours, however, is also important in giving information about things such as the colour of cash note (blue, green, red, orange and purple), the colour of spices (yellow turmeric, red chilli, green chilli) and colour of cloth. Without a sense of visual, they are not able to recognise colour and perceive the beauty of colour. This study was conducted to develop a colour recognizer for visually disabled people. Colour recogniser used the colour sensor to sense the colour, microcontroller to recognise the colour and notify the user using a speech generator and speaker. The device is powered by dry cell batteries and designed to be user-friendly, practical and portable. The testing is done to show that this device was able to sense and differentiate 12 primary colours in the RGB colour wheel and validated the accuracy of this devices.
Assist System for Visually Impaired People to Recognize Pure Colours
Visually impaired individuals are growing segment in this era. Developing tools for visually impaired people is not a recently emerged problem. But developing computer aided tools are still developing area for visually impaired people. Assist system for visually impaired people refers to system that is able to assist or guide people with vision loss, ranging from partially sighted to totally blind, by means of sounds of commands. Our developed system involves detecting pure colours for visual impaired people to identify colour of clothes and medicine based on the pure colour packets. This collection of insights is laid out in audio format to assist with identifying pure colour of clothes. This system can use instead of traditional way of identifying above mentioned matters. Traditional ways are, they use white cane for mobility and get assist from second person. To identify pure colour of clothes, they get help from another party. To overcome the white cane mobility challenge, this proposed system "Assist system for visually impaired people" could be a solution for constraints in independent mobility, identifying colours in efficient manner. The system is made to identify colours using TCS230 Colour Sensor and Ardunio Board. Ultimate goal of this system is to uplift the life style of visually impaired people by making them more independent and aware of their surroundings by hearing sound. The system has been tested in real time by both blindfolded and blind people at different indoor and outdoor locations, demonstrating that it operates adequately.
IMPLEMENTATION OF COLOR-BLIND AID SYSTEM

Color-blind is a physical defect causing patient loses the ability to recognize colors either particular or the whole of them. This disability is problematic in daily life, moreover in some specific areas that require carefulness eyesight. We propose a vision aid kit with improved user experience, such as finger pointer and voice command-and-response. Our work proofs the design and implementation of color-blind aid system for embedded and mobile device. This study used Windows Embedded Standard 2009, Windows Phone 7, Speech API library, Open CV library and EmguCV wrapper. The performance of each functionality is evaluated. From various testing that are conducted, the system can best detect color samples with precision level of 90.67% on embedded device implementation and 95.33% on mobile device implementation. The best fingertip detection rate attained is 89.6% with normal lighting condition. The voice command works with detection rate of 75.87%, meanwhile for the synthesized speech response, 88, 33% respondents can understood the words well.

In this paper, a camera based prototype system is proposed. The system is capable of recognizing the clothing pattern and color. The system consists of ARM micro controller with camera. The picture of cloth is fed as input to pattern analyzer. The pattern analyzer detects the color of the cloth, texture and design pattern. Speakers aid the visually impaired by playing the pre-recorded message. The proposed system is found to efficient and simple to use for the visually impaired people.
Object Identification and Colour Recognition for Human Blind

Navigation Assistance for Visually Impaired (NAVI) is a vision substitute system designed to assist blind people for autonomous navigation. NAVI working concept is based on 'image to sound' conversion. The vision sensor, which is mounted on a sunglass, captures the image infront of blind user. NAVI processing unit processes the captured image and enhances the significant vision data by employing a set of image processing procedures. The processed information is then presented as a structured form of acoustic signal and it is conveyed to the blind user using a set of earphones. This paper proposes a new object identification and colour recognition module for NAVI system. Image processing techniques are proposed to identify objects in the captured image and then the processed image is transformed into stereo sound patterns. Colour information from the interested object is evaluated to determine the colour of the object. The colour output is informed to the blind user through 'verbal voice'.
Development of Color Vision Deficiency Assistive System

Color vision deficiency is commonly known as color blind, is a type of vision defect in our eyeball. The inability to recognize color has caused several problems to the patient daily life and in conducting certain color oriented activities. To help the patient cope with the problem of recognizing colors, a color vision deficiency aided device is designed. This paper focuses on developing a user interface that can detect colors and show it as text on the screen of the device using the concept of augmented reality. The system basically consists of a mini computer, Raspberry PI and its own camera module as well as a LCD screen for display purposes. Raspberry PI is used due to its small and compact size and capability to carry out image processing. With the help of OpenCV library, color detection, filtering and processing can be carried out easily. Benchmark shape and color of has been designed for experimental purposes to test for the performance and functionality of the system. The result of the distance test shows that the hue (H) element is almost consistent whereas the saturation (S) varies by roughly 49.3% and value (V) by 30.5%. As for the range of detection, the minimum range is 12 cm where the maximum range is up to 15 meter. The accuracy of the 4 base colors detection is about 80%.

In the most developed States colorblindness affects 10% of the male population. This handicap incurs limitations as well as uncomfortable personal and social situations for those afflicted that depend on others to choose products in which color is a predominant factor, such as pieces of apparel and decoration. A sample group of colorblind people showed in a recent study found relevant the development of a system which would allow them to identify colors. The development of a graphic color identification system was the answer to this need, its concept and structure make it universal, easy to communicate and memorize. This system can be used in a variety of products and allow the colorblind to reduce or even eliminate their dependence on others.
Development of a Smart Device for Blind & Visually Impaired Person using Computer Vision

Developing a tool for the visually impaired people is a trivial area of concern. However, use of computer vision in these devices is a fairly new trend and recent topic of interest. There are several works using computer vision techniques which focus on specific requirements of blind people. But there is no existing methods that help to solve all the basic needs of blind person. In this paper, we propose an idea of a device which can capture images in real time and comprehend its equivalent speech directly into the ear of visually impaired person. This new system may solve some of major problems of blind persons that are still exists. The prototype facilitates object detection using image recognition techniques. Open Computer Vision (OpenCV) performs image analysis, classification of images and prediction of the type of object on household object dataset.
