Speaking Anxiety of EFL High School Students: Indonesian and Moroccan Cases

This study aims to explore the speaking difficulties encountered by Moroccan and Indonesian high school students, as well as shed light on the level of anxiety they are experiencing and its causes. The study employs a quantitative approach. A Likert scale-based questionnaire was administered to 30 Moroccan high school students, and 30 others to their fellow Indonesian students. The results of the study showed that Indonesian students experiences high level of English speaking anxiety compared to their fellow Moroccan students. Pronunciation, fear of making mistakes and fear of negative evaluation are the major causes of EFL speaking anxiety of these groups.

English Speaking Anxiety Among Indonesian Junior High School Learners: In Search of Causes and Solutions

In the last few decades, foreign language speaking anxiety (hereafter, FLSA) has been a debatable investigative issue among linguists and TESOL practitioners. One of the most salient factors is it generates an incapacitating impact for speakers to communicate orally in English as a foreign language. However, delving learning activities as a cause of FLSA and its solutions, notably in Indonesian secondary school level remains scarce. Speaking Skill's Language Anxiety Experienced by Freshers of English Language Education Department in Islamic Private University Schemata: Jurnal Pasca Sarjana IAIN Mataram

The aims of this study is to find out the language anxiety levels encountered by the freshmen of English Language Education Department, the reasons of the language anxiety, and how the students cope with the language anxiety. It is a mixed-method study conducted in an Islamic private university in Malang. The population included 128 English Language Education Department freshmen in the academic year 2019/2020. Through convenience sampling, 32 students from six speaking classes were obtained. A survey using Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCAS) questionnaire and interview were applied as the techniques to gather the data. The findings revealed that 91% freshmen are identified to experience a medium level of anxiety (76-119). Besides, the reasons of the language anxiety included communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, and fear of making mistakes in the test. Several ways to cope with the language anxiety comprised practicing before class and keeping the up with the positive mind. ABSTRAK Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat kecemasan berbahasa yang dialami oleh mahasiswa baru Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, alasan kecemasan berbahasa, dan cara mahasiswa mengatasi kecemasan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran yang dilakukan di sebuah universitas swasta Islam di Malang. Populasi penelitian ini adalah 128 mahasiswa baru Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris tahun ajaran 2019/2020. Melalui convenience sampling, diperoleh 32 siswa dari enam kelas berbicara. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCAS) dan wawancara. Temuan tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa 91% mahasiswa baru diidentifikasi mengalami tingkat kecemasan sedang (76-119). Selain itu, alasan kecemasan bahasa termasuk ketakutan komunikasi, takut evaluasi negatif, dan takut membuat kesalahan dalam ujian. Beberapa cara untuk mengatasi kecemasan bahasa terdiri dari berlatih sebelum kelas dan menjaga pikiran positif.

Lower Secondary Students’ Arabic Speaking Anxiety: A Foreign Language Literacy Perspective

Speaking in a foreign language classroom can be extremely anxiety provoking for some students. There are many studies on foreign language anxiety (FLA). The studies show that anxiety influences achievement and performance in speaking. However, most of the previous research have investigated FLA in English speaking contexts. Hence, this study aims to investigate speaking anxiety among Arabic Language learners in secondary schools from the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The students (n=40) were selected following the random sampling method. The established questionnaire of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) developed by Horwitz et al. (1986) was used for collecting the data. This questionnaire consists of four factors namely test anxiety, communication apprehension, anxiety in the classroom and fear of negative evaluation. The researcher followed descriptive statistical methods including means and standard deviation values to address the research questions. The study shows that the process of learning the Arabic Language has significant impact on students in learning a foreign language especially in daily secondary schools. The findings show several concerns exist among the students while speaking Arabic in the classroom. The results can help Arabic Language teachers to understand students’ anxiety in the process of teaching the language in the daily/non-boarding secondary schools which will contribute to literacy of Arabic Language at large.

The Level of Students’ Anxiety in Speech at Universitas Muslim Nusantara Al- Washliyah Medan

The objective of the studies is to analyze of anxiety levels the students at sixth semester of English Department of Muslim Nusantara University in academic year 2020/2021. This research used a descriptive quantitative research design. The collected data were described and presented through a simple statistical formula in a descriptive explanation. The subject of the research was twenty-five randomly selected students from the English Department. The level of students' anxiety is rated by the FLAS (the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale) through a speaking test, which they needed to deliver their speech. Then, a questionnaire in this studies was adapted from the FLAS (The Foreign Language Anxiety Scale) proposed by Horwitzh. The Foreign Language of Anxiety Scale (FLAS) contained 33 statements devide into three categories namely apprehension of communication, test of anxiety, and afraid of a bad assessment. This research found that 9,2% of the students got very anxious level, 115,3% of the students were at anxious level, and 98,2 % of them were categorized as middle anxious. For the result, it is found that there was not any participant in the level of relaxed and very relaxed. This research concluded that most of the students were having speech anxiety at the anxious level.

This research aims to investigate the level of language anxiety among Arabic as a Foreign Language students at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), focusing on the following variables: the level of anxiety for the students in general and the differences in anxiety levels between students with an academic background in learning Arabic Language and students with no prior experience learning Arabic Language. The study sample includes 149 students, including 73 from the Faculty of Business and Management, 38 from the Faculty of Health Sciences, and 38 from the Faculty of Accountancy.
